  1. Nothing for me! I want to read the codes, to see if I need to get anything sorted, especially as I'm having issues with it stalling when turned on from cold.
  2. Ah, that's what I'm using. Thought this was the right topic!
  3. I'm trying for a 3rd time to get this working. No joy. I've put it on COM3 (as advised). Tried it with all ignition positions. Changed baud rates etc. Non-OEM stereo removed as well. I get clicking from a relay near the switch for the lights, I hear thats normal though. The ABS check gives me "too many communication errors to continue" and the Engine option says it can't communicate. Any ideas?
  4. Ok, it maybe because its colder (although it was about 8degrees this morning), but it seems to like to cut out straight away once I've started it. I've taken to giving a bit of gas on ignition to help it out, but it takes the revs then dies.
  5. Voltage across the battery is 13.66 at 1k and 2k rpm. Battery's been checked by the company who sold it. It errored first, went on a charge, and then no errors. So they said they won't swap it out. Is it worth looking at the ignition? Or just bite the bullet and buy a new battery?

    Running rich

Ah thanks, I didnt change any settings. Gave up when the battery went! It's a pre existing problem, it's go flat after a month as it mainly does shorter journeys, but I still think there is a short or a dodgy battery

So, I just tried using it and got a error. It found the cable on the com port, but then wouldn't communicate. I went to turn the car off and back on and now my battery is flat! I can't blame the cable (yet) as I knew my battery was temperamental. But, before I spend £50 on a new battery, whats the best way to test if there is a short draining the battery?
  8. May I ask your method, and how bad were they before?

    Belt squeak

I tent to get a small squeak out of a belt when starting, then a few mins down the road again. Dipping the clutch stops (or makes it so quite I can't hear it). Any ideas? Or do I need to drop it into a garage?
  10. Possible for a first-time-refurb person to do? Or do they cost the earth to get done?

    Running rich

Is it worth getting one of these for ease of use? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAG-Diagnostic-Fault-Reader-Car-Code-Scanner-OBD-OBD2-/120774180100?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item1c1eb3bd04 Or just grabbing the standard cable and a 2+2 (they are so cheap...) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAG-USB-DIAGNOSTIC-CABLE-409-1-OBD2-II-LEAD-VAG-COM-/330399696070?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4ced5b44c6 My car is a late 1995 (N) Will it need the 2+2?

    Running rich

From what I've just read, it well could be. Is it worth checking it? Where is it?

It's hard to start when cold. Fine when warm

    Running rich

Would that cause it to struggle to start sometimes? It tends to die if I don't give it some revs on start up

    Running rich

A fried was following me earlier and said that my car smelt like it was running rich. I'm also getting bad mpg. How to I tell if this is the case? Car is standard.
  19. The ignition does seem a bit broken, if I stop the car sometimes the stereo (switched power) goes off, sometimes it doesn't. It also wont start from the last (but engine running) position, it needs to go all the way off and back on.
  20. I got the battery tested at a local tyre centre. It was reported that it needed replacing. Took it back to a branch of where it was purchased, it was charged for a few hours and tested and reported that it was all fine. So they didnt swap it. I was told it was probably so flat that it gave a false reading. Anyway, I'm going to run the car and see if/how long it takes to go flat. Then I'll look into the alternator...
  21. Now you mention the belt, it does squeak a bit. Not sure what one though. Is that is slipping? So not getting charged?
  22. Hoping for a bit more help. I've had the battery on charge and still seem to be getting the same issue. It seems to be when a few electronics are on. For instance today, I had the lights, rear de-steamer, radio and heater on. Rev counter drops to 0, unless you give it some throttle and it pops back up. Wipers still going slow. I've also noticed a squeaky belt. Could it be slipping on the alternator?
  23. Of course! Why didn't I think of that. Will get it done at work tomorrow. Thanks. Virtual beer for you
  24. I've managed to damage the thread in my door lock, so need a whole new handle. After one in good nick, but don't need the barrel part.
  25. Woohoo, found the nut on my work car park! Bad news is the thread has gone on the door handle. Soooo, I need a new door handle, change the barrel, then change my new 'door fix' to the door handle.
