  1. Thanks beeftech, I got to buy the engine etc first though before I worry about that. But I will remember you said that as I may well take you up on that offer. What do you or anyone else think is a reasonable price for buying the 225 bam engine with gearbox, complete loom, ecu, pullies, pumps, all belts & pipes, alternator, clocks & keys???
  2. I'm looking to put the 20v bam 225 one in. Theres one for sale at the minute (some of you may know what one im talking about) & it comes with the 6 sp gearbox, pullies, pumps, all belts & pipes, alternator, clocks keys & ecu etc... It's a 2003 engine with 50k miles - what you reckon would be a reasonable price for all that?
  3. What else have you guys changed when you done the conversion........like have you changed the engine mounts and stuff? Where did you all get your intercoolers? Jeff - If i lived closer to england Id love to get someone like andy to do it for me, but Im trying to get someone over here in NI to do it if possible.......and its proving a bugger to find somone. In saying that - if I had to contact Andy, where roughly is it he lives & how long would it take for him to do a conversion, oh and what do you think he'd charge? Does he modify the original ECU or would he need someone else to do that?
  4. I read this from the qpeng website - they say "While the 1.8T 20v engine is one of the strongest and certainly the most tuneable engine VW has ever released, its potential as a transplant engine is somewhat marred by the need to transfer other components such as the instruments and steering column from the donor vehicle in order for the in engine management system to function" Are they saying if you use the standard ECU that comes with the engine you buy that youd need to change the steering column ?? But if you use a qpeng ECU then you wouldn't need to change the steering column? Just sounds a bit weird!
  5. Can someone explain what engine management means! If youre doing an engine conversion (say 1.8T BAM) is this something else you have to buy? Is this just another word for the ECU
  6. Isn't here some number you can ring up and if you quote the number plate or the chassis number maybe they can tell you the details of the accident? Or am I thinking of something else !
  7. I'm on the look out for a 1.8T BAM engine. I'd like to know what you guys think would be good questions to ask before buying. If I was buying it on the internet & it wasn't possibe for me to look at it personally before buying it is there any other key things I should ask. Also what price range should I be looking at if it includes the gearbox & also looms, ecu, keys, etc?
  8. I guess I could turbo my 16v, but at the minute I'm fancying the younger 20v engine with a hell of of a lot less miles on the clock.
  9. I'm on the lookout for a 1.8T engine to convert my 1.8 16v. Does anybody know what the difference between the APX and BAM engine codes are for the 1.8T ?
  10. I see, any idea how much o-rings are steveo ?
  11. Can someone tell me how the fuel injectors are supposed to sit in the 1.8 16v. Are they meant to sit slackish in the engine and should you be able to just pull them out and push them back in without any tightening?
  12. One other question. Does anyone know if there's a gaskett between the gearbox and engine? If there is I was thinking it would be a good time to replace it.
  13. Yeah sorry ignore my "300.00" estimate. Must have been smoking something there. I've been quoted around 160.00 for the labour, so I guess that's about right. I'm gonna go with the GSF one by LUK probably. Think I'll stay clear of the Sachs modle though as I've read more bad than good about them.
  14. What sort of price would you all expect to pay for getting the new clutch fitted? The clutch plate/release bearings & pressure plate. 300.00 sound right?
  15. I went into my local volkswagen dealers today to get a price for a new clutch for my 1.8 16v KR. He tapped up the details into the computer and said they cost 260.00 quid !!!!! So I phoned up German/Swedish and they are selling them (made by LUK) for 65.00 quid + v.a.t !! I asked both VW & German/Swedish what is the difference between the clutches and they both told me there isn't any. Can someone tell me their opinions on a clutch supplied by German/Swedish....is it going to be a good/reliable as a genuine VW one? What is the difference if there is any?
  16. When it comes to rust the "car hospital" is the only way to go in my opinion
  17. A low miler and it still costs me a bomb to run. :)
  18. These pics would help a buyers guide I agree, but the same colour can look very different depending on the light.
  19. Hey Hub, very nice pic's! She's looking great. :D
  20. Thats more than helpful davidwort, thanks a million!
  21. Can anyone tell me....as per my Q above.
  22. Does the same process apply to the 1.8 16v ? Belts located is same place etc..?
  23. Does the bypass valve have two little arrows on it? One pointing up and one pointing down? Also is it just a matter of taking it off and putting the new one on....a 10 min job in theory or is there more to it.
