Downpipe and first silencer are all one part on the 1.8L. Silencer tends to be the first part to go on them.
-
Yeah, I ended up replacing all the new standard parts about a year after they were fitted with a stainless system, that amazingly cost a good deal less!
-
A few years back I had to get the rear box and centre box changed on my valver...I got a pretty good discount from Kwik fit in the end, because they ordered the wrong parts three times in a row...but it still cost me £200+ Centre pipe section was replaced just after I bought the car in 2003 and cost about £35 + fitting + vat, along with a load of other work. When Kwik fit were doing the back sections they showed me that the front silencer/downpipe was on its last legs...they said it was over £200 plus fitting costs!!! Luckily I bought a new one on Ebay for £50 and they agreed to fit it for free. So that was all back in 2003/2004, so without any discount and assuming all the parts would cost a few quid more now.....I could well see it coming to what you were quoted!

The sensor in the expansion tank for the coolant is simply two bare pins of metal, that completes a circuit through the liquid in the tank. Level warning light starts flashing once the water drops and the circuit is broken. I'd be slightly worried about the lack of heat from the heaters...lack of coolant temp gauge and a flashing warning light though! Coolant temp signal/sender is on the side of the head, just below the dizzy. It's a single pin plug that takes approx 1.5 seconds to re-connect.....so I cant see why any mechanic wouldn't bother!! [Edit]Just noticed that you are only getting warm air from the heater, not just cold, not as bad so! Just check the plug at the top of the expansion tank, and the sender on the side of the head I mentioned

Ah well, they are bought now....and I was having trouble sourcing any sort of d/s flanges, without having to buy a whole gearbox! Intercooler came from a company called uk_performance, it's not a custom made one...But after a day of head scratching with a measuring tape I figured out what size would neatly fit in there, and they supplied a decent one, that was the right size, and at the right price!

I'm still really laying out all the wiring for the MS. Everything is pretty much in the correct place now. So it all just has to be tidied up really. Just have to take a switched 12v supply from the coil to the relay board and splice the fuel pump circuit and that's about it! (apart from troubleshooting and tuning obviously  )
-
Intercoolers in after a bit of "alteration" to the back of the slam panel with an angle grinder :D top surface and front edge of the slam panels also had a respray, and I've modified a late spec grille to fit, only test fitting it at the moment though. And clearance behind the IC....need to buy a new rad before bolting it all in!

  ...wow that was a while back alright! bought one of these in the end  : Bildon clicky

I cant remember which pin is needed on the iso plug, but it is really easy to get the feed for it! I just used the + lead from the light for the heater controls!

It depends on how much work you are willing to put into stripping all the parts really! The smaller you break everything down into, the more money I think you get from it! For example: I stuck a single elec window swith on ebay starting at 99p and it ended up selling for £15+. But when I put and entire door car up with all the switches etc still attached I "only" got £25....so I would have got way more if I had split up all the doorcard parts...but then you have more of the probs with delivery etc that Toad was mentioning. From the bits I've sold in the past..I think there is more than £800 worth of parts on a valver though

I ordered in a turbo from the States, unfort they sent me the wrong one! It was way too big and had a T4 mounting flange, that didn't match with my manifold. So to save the hassle and cost involved in returning it to them; I just flogged it on ebay!
-
Figure this is well overdue an update!! New engine is in the car, and I'm just finalising a new wiring loom for the megasquirt II. I've stripped all the subframes etc, and fitted new mounts. Mirror polished the new 02j gearbox, and fitted it with some new driveshaft flanges (even the dealer was shocked at how much they cost), lightweight billet steel flywheel and a Sachs VR6 clutch. Finished mirror polishing the manifolds and fitted in the new fuel rail + injectors + fpr. Just need something to fill this hole now......

Great price, compared to what they usually go for these days!!!
-
Yup it's right at the top of the head! I got myself a little t-piece so I can keep the mfa temp sensor too! Unfort I managed to screw the sensor in too tightly and snapped half of it off inside the t-piece! So now I have to go and extract the silly thing!
-
Cheers! Looks good!...About three hours drive away tho! They do deliver. So I could give them the specs I guess.....may be a bit risky getting perfect fit tho.

wonder if it was Mimi from that old Riptide show so:

I've been searching about for somewhere that can supply/make a new downpipe from the turbo for my 16v. Anyone know of any places?
-
Dishwasher did a good job on mine!
-
yeah! the 2004 New beetle lists the two part numbers I've put up above, and only those two part numbers!
-
yeah, that's what I was told a while back....apparently early 02j boxes also used 100m flanges. And according to the part numbers......they were the 100mm 02a flanges standard on Corrados!?
-
Just before I left to go to the dealers to fork out some extortionate amount for some 100mm driveshaft flanges to replace the 108mm ones currently on my new 02j gearbox I decided to double check the part no.s that I needed! Standard 1990 100mm Corrado driveshaft flanges are: 02A 405 355D Mk4 GTi Golf ones that I have on the new box are: 02A 409 355G But I was amazed when looking through the different types of flanges for 02j boxes that a number of them had '02A' prefixes! And the 100mm ones I was looking for were actually the same part number as the the original ones on my old Standard Corrado box! They are mounted with a hex bolt (which I can take off the new box anyway)...but I assume that seen as the part numbers are identical the driveshaft flanges are transferable after all? Pic of 02j box:

When I got mine resprayed I was offered about 5 differernt shades of Tornado red from the colour charts...all the same paint code though. The variation between them was quite a lot though!

http://www.speeding.co.uk/acatalog/Car_Accessories_Savage_Style_110.html The 'Savage' stuff is what I used, and generally seems to be the best!
-
Find out the specific code for the 02j box, and look up the ratios for it to make sure they are suitable! I'm fitting a 02j to mine at the moment. I've gone for the full cable change mech from a Seat Ibiza cupra, which is a straight swap from the rado shifter. Its actually a better fit than the original, which was hard to believe! You'll also need to swap the Golf 110mm driveshaft flanges with 100mm driveshaft flanges, which afaik only came on 1.8T Beetles.
