  1. You'd think I'd have something productive to do in work...but it's pretty slow coming up to Christmas...so! Pic is of a basic 2d CAD sketch of the profile of my rado (In purple for the true believers)...I basically have converted it to 3d, stuck a few wheels underneath it, and processed it through various aerodynamic software packages (50K per years worth of someone elses software being misused here!!! :lol: :oops: :oops: ) Anyways, the calculations are up and running pretty well.....should get some results later on tonight, or tomorrow morning. It's only a pretty basic model, but should show the main flow features and produce some nice streamline pics! 8)
  2. Ok....I've been trawling through my CAD files and the closest model I can find to the Corrado is a Laguna. Both hatchback, so flow over the rear should be similar! I can setup any sort of spolier desings you can think of on the back of it (or anywhere else you may like) and see what the outcome is! Just post up a rough pic of it and I can draw it up!.....Results will take about a day to get back depending on computer load! :wink: :wink:
  3. You cant just say, that because something produces turbulence it will decrease lift!....it's far more complicated than that! And the curve at the back of the spolier wont have a huge effect on the spoliers characteristics. The flow will seperate fropm the lower surface of the spolier at the front edge creating a sort of virtual flow surface below it. All aerodynamic forces can only act on a surface. And every surface in a flow will produce some sort of force. Turbulence behind the car cant affect either lift , drag or downforce as there is no surface of the car there for it to act on!
  4. lol...no snow here either! I'll setup the simulations later with a generic, corrado'ish 2d profile. It's not truly acting as part of the cars body, because it has flow both above and below it though! And breaking up the 'stable' flow and increasing turbulence doesn't necessarlily reduce lift at all!!....the project I'm currently working on (I'm an aerodynamicist) is tripping laminar flow to turbulence to Increase lift!
  5. Ok...I see what you're saying. But, gravity still has nothing to do with aerodynamics though (lift/drag/downforce) If I was to model the rear spolier on its own in a simulated 30m/s windtunnel it will produce downforce! It's just the fact that the body of the car will produce a lot more lift than the amount of downforce generated by the spoiler. So, the spoiler will reduce the lift produced by the car due to the downforce it creates, but obviously not generate enough downforce to completely counteract it. The spolier is effectively altering the shape of the car to reduce the lift it produces. But analysed on its own it is a downforce producing element, no question about it! The computers in here aren't really being used a whole lot as it's coming up to Xmas, so I'll run a few cfd simulations over the next few days to illustrate what I'm on about! :wink:
  6. Well gravity has no bearing on aerodynamics whatsoever (unless you are analysing a particulate flow) so doesn't affect the lift coeff at all!! Caling lift 'negative downforce' is correct in practice...just not termed very well! :-P
  7. Not "poor terminology", just "utter ****". ;) ehh...it's actually more or less right!... lift coefficient = negative downforce coefficient. Car produces lift (neg df) at speed. The spolier is designed to "spoil" or reduce the lift coeff, therefore decreasing the negative downforce (lift) produced! It's the same term...just the opposite sense!....so saying the spolier increases downforce isn't actually "wrong"
  8. Well if by any miracle someone has a 2d or 3d CAD model of a Corrado, I have all the aerodynamic/CFD software and access to a large multi processor computer here to do a full analysis on it and settle this once and for all! :lol: :lol:

    Head gasket Change

    yup....I just had to drill one of the exhaust manifold bolts out when doing a head gasket change!.....major pain in the butt! and lucky that I was swapping over the head for a spare one, as the stud was completely destroyed in the process and would have been impossible to remove! make sure you have all the timing marks...and go over them with some paint/tip-ex so you can clearly see them!.....makes it way easier to get the cambelt correctly fitted!

  11. Problem was the pipe running from the inlet elbow from the airbox to the overrun cut-off valve (cylinder shaped yoke with two pipes and a plug; located right in behind the airbox) had come slightly loose and was letting air in.
  12. lol...nope! Turned out to be a vacuum leak!....fact that one of the pipes managed to work its way loose just as I did an oil change kinda threw me tho! Anyways...all working now!
  13. Just done a head swap on one of my valvers. Everything was running perfectly last night, timing was good and did a full flush of the coolant system. This morning started straight up and idled nicely...so I left it for a few mins and then did an oil/filter change. Went to start it up again and it's running like carp now!....struggles to start...sounds lumpy when running and cuts out as soon as you take your foot off the pedal. I had it ticking over for well over an hour last night while I checked for leaks and watched the temps to make sure they were stable, and everything was good. So anyone have any idea how simply changing the oil can kill the car like this? :?: :?:

  17. I've been looking through the Haynes manual and I cant find the tightening sequence for the head bolts on a 1.8L 16v. Anyone have a link to a diagram? :wink:

A big cost in the 16vt conversion that a lot of people seem to overlook or underestimate the cost of is the uprated pistons + rods etc. Pistons rods From what I've read up on the conversions I wouldn't waste my time with the thick copper headgasket route to lower the standard compression ratio.
  20. Oh yeah, sorry! :oops: The block and head etc have already been completely rebuilt and are still waiting patiently in my garage! S2 rods and turbotechnics pistons 7.8:1 comp ratio.

Should keep myself involved in this one anyway! :D I'm just really getting started on the turbo conversion now.....Plans are (subject to being changed as I change my mind every few days/learn something new): edited bit: Fully rebuilt block and head, S2 rods and Turbotechnics pistons comp ratio of 7.8:1 T3 or T3/T4 hybrid (not yet bought) Tubular turbo manifold and 38mm wastegate 28" x 5.5" x 3" FMIC Megasquirt II V3 ECU (Christmas prezzie to myself I think) Water injection (not yet bought) 02j Gearbox from a 1.8T Leon Vr6 clutch Billet steel lightweight flywheel BMC CDA (not yet bought) Full s/s Scorpion exhaust system (still need the turbo downpipe) And a big list of other parts!
  22. Will probably be using some of these injector seats from bbm etc: http://bahnbrenner.com/media/php/catalog.php?pid=1222 and then possibly some red top 30lb injectors, but I will have to research which injectors to use once I start building the new ECU :wink: injectors
  23. Finally got some work on the car done today! :D After a lot of elbow grease, and a few trees worth of wet and dry sandpaper, I got the top half of the inlet manifold properly polished! And the new Pieburg throttle body, with a TPS for the Megasquirt kit fitted up perfectly to it! Also bought myself a new fuel rail in from the States: And may have sourced a lightweight Billet flywheel too! http://www.bildon.com/catalog/DetailsList.cfm?ID=10.105.100K&Nav=5 OH!....I also got the headlights tinted, as I had some black paint and a paintbrush in my hands! :lol:
  24. Ok, now that the rocco is sold, it's time to get back to work on building the 16vt over the winter! I'm currently looking for a few random parts, so if anyone had any of these for sale or knew where there may be some of these bits for sale it would be much appreciated! :wink: 1) Alloy 16v/G60 Fidanza type flywheel (available from anywhere outside the US for a reasonable price?) 2) 100mm Beetle driveshaft flanges to fit 02j box (no breakers I've asked seem to be able to supply) 3) Front and rear seats. will be used for a leather re-trim, so any old scruffy/stained seats will do, as long as they are structurally ok! 4) 02j shifter mech (gearstick and shift tower from the top of the g/b)
