would you buy under these circumstances?..............
crdo16v replied to DannyBwoy's topic in General Car Chat
Totally agree with slimbo, I am buying a 5 year old golf tomorrow- I don't expect it to be perfect (it's not) & fully expect to have to buy some parts for it as & when. As the guys have said it is not a new car & virtually any car/ raddo  is going to need work sooner or later, just try to avoid having to pay for anything expensive early- ie engine/box etc. Give the bodywork particularly the underside a thorough going over looking particularly for rust, leaks, signs of new underseal etc. Usual checks under the bonnet, engine oil nice & clean, brake fluid up to the mark, no nasty niffs of oil being burnt or the smell of antifreeze, no blue smoke from the exhust when engine revved. blah, blah, you know the stuff . I would expect to do this on any car. Hope that helps with your deliberations, good luck mate. :thumbleft: -

My advice would be to ask the seller whether he has a problem with you taking it to a garage you can trust to give it a good checking over & to allow you to have a good long test drive. If it all pans out OK then get an HPI check & establish that he is the genuine owner, see if he can put a new MOT on it too. If all is OK & the price is very right then maybe you should go for it. If he & the car are genuine he should accept that your requests are reasonable. Good luck. :thumb right: -
They'll do-they talks virtually the same as uz. :drinking:

-
Valerian- as far as I know Devonians & some other folk refer to giving their car a good bootin' as giving it a good raz, a waz is also a p*ss to uz down yer. Sorry bout that me buy. :cuckoo:

gixxer-you have an expansion tank on your head, must help when you want to "blow off"- some steam? :hic:
-
Haywire-as the song (ebeneezer good) goes "naughty, naughty, very naughty". :nono: Another Porker gets seen off, I'd have paid some serious money to see the look on his face :gag: Well done.

Walesy- pmsl, did'nt want to mention the badboy 8v

For all you stato freaks-Volkswagen Audi car mag. feature from 1994 gave the following 0-60 mph times for manual gearchange standard raddos- 1.8 16v 8.2 secs 2.0 16v 8.3 " 1.8 G60 7.5 " 2.9 VR6 6.4 " I'll step back now & let the handbags start swinging :agrue:

Hopefully I will be getting either a mark 4 Golf either GTI (petrol) turbo or V5 (on credit) thanks to the tos*er who wrote my raddo off. I hope he had a really sh*t Christmas too.

I have been told you sometimes have to wait weeks for say a light cluster for a stock official import honda, imagine how long it could take to get hold of a part for a grey import. I can see the attraction but personally would not buy one. :rambo:

What suspension :luvlove:

Couple of people I work with have got them, they seem happy enough with them & have'nt spent a fortune trying to maintain them. Suggest you check insurance costs before diving in.
-
Not a happy bunny, Parkers says £1200 (private sale) & I have been told Glass's is even less, have to wait & see what the Insurers say. You can imagine what I can get for that less £250 excess. Still I won't accept it if they offer me that amount. :pukeright: Top tip- get agreed value insurance if you can.
-
Thanks Karl, seems like we've both fallen foul of some crap driving by others. I'm off now to check Parkers for book value & don't expect to be a happy bunny then :albino:
-
Thanks for your messages guys. Thanks Ols- your G60 is a real beaut. Neil- I may try to buy it as salvage but that depends on the insurance co. If it goes to a breakers I will try to find out which one & where & post details on the forum for anybody interested. Happy Christmas :reindeer:

Yeah, I keep thinking if only I'd done something different that day then I would not have been in his way, still as they say life's a bitch etc, etc.
-
Thanks Nick, I'm nearly 48 & hate to say it but think I will need to get something a bit less "sporty" as my next car.

Guy in the Golf T-boned it on the near side, it was about 5pm & dark, extensive damage all down nearside including damage to the sill (probable chasis is bent), n/s front wheel buckled- ie damage is bad.

My dearly loved valver was written off by a speeding fool in a Golf on Saturday. Went to see my "baby" today & she still looked good despite the damage, I am totally gutted. Owing to the serious damage & the fact that she is 15 years old likely it will be written off, unlikely that I will get another raddo. Best wishes to all of you- my friends on the forum & enjoy your cars whilst you can.

Blimey what will the boys in the Camper vans say (other than gnarly dude) when they check-out that last photo :nono:

Hey Dinky I was only joking about the Shandies, you know we all drink "natch" cider down here all day. :pukeright:
-
Valerian- I thought I was going to need an ignition switch recently & was quoted about £20 from Mann Egerton, Exeter (VW dealers), which I thought was pretty fair. Problem on mine turned out to be the immobilizer transponder which was under the steering column shroud, since fixed. I would like to meet up with you & Ronan sometime (when the weather is warmer), we could kick tyres & have a bitch about how much cash we've spent on our raddos & maybe have a few shandies! :drinking:

Hard to put a price on it Fiona, but it's the best looking white raddo I've seen. I would not be in a hurry to sell it. Parkers Guide would probably not be much use but you may want to check their "older cars guide".
