Incidentally - I only noticed your age the other day - I always thought you were older! So when did you have your first Corrado?

I was 23 when I first got mine! Still no other car does it for me quite like the C - styling is classic!

True, though I have to admit, the handling of a 4wd Passat is, well, astounding....

Roundabout at 65mph anyone? ;)

well this is a shocker!

you won't last long Andi without one - i got rid of my first Storm a few years

ago and then spent a year in the wilderness with a 'sensible' car and then

spent another year looking for another Storm. Since then I've sworn never to

sell it.

So in true Del Boy style : Its not goodbye...just Au revoir

Yup, must admit I enjoy the roundabouts especially wet ones on the Bora.

whats the diff between 4 motion and synchro... coz i woulda thought being a newer car same age-ish as the bora and MK4 it woulda been a 4 motion?????

Isn't Syncro mechanically coupled whereas 4Motion is the electronically controlled Haldex system?

I think the later Passats were 4Motion but this is one of the earlier ones...

Comfy pimp styles tho! If you get some Merc rims on it and slam it into the weeds that is... ;)

There was a detailed article on the exact differences floating about... :study:

Synchro is permnament 4wd, with Torsen diffs. (Audi Quattro style)

4motion is via Haldex, which only puts power to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip - 4motion is essentially FWD until it needs the rear wheels to help with grip.

Synchro is heavier than 4motion but is true AWD where as 4motion, despite the name, isn't. Kinda. ;)

Am I right in thinking that your Passat essentially has a full Audi drivetrain, obviously the 4wd system couldn't be called quattro but thats exactly what it is in all bar name

Yup, my Passat Synchro is essentially a Audi A4 Quattro with a Passat shell on the top.

The 30v engine is Audi's creation too.

Quattro is just a brand name for the Torsen-diff-linked 4wd system - as is Synchro.

So yeah, it's a proper 4wd ;)

And apparently to marry up to the Synchro/Quattro system you have to have the engine inline and not transversely mounted. Whereas the 4motion system can be driven by a transversely mounted engine if required.

That would explain the different (Audi 30v) engine instead of the 'usual' 2.8 24v VW one.

(I've been doing a little reading... hehe)

begging for a g-man style conversion!

hopfully we'll see more of these on the VW scene now the prices are dropping, early tdi's and 1.8t's can be had for peanuts, the syncro is a rarer beasty though.

Nice looking motor.. comfortable, good handling, and powerful as well as just being a cruiser! Its a lot of car for not a lot of cash.

Mate of mine had one for a while. Mixed experience, apparently. The engine is too smart for it's own good, he says he wished it had a carburettor...

But overall it was fast, grippy and pretty reliable.

I think you need to remind your friend that we left the 80's some time ago! How is the engine too smart?!

Like it ignores the throttle position if you're tickling the brakes at the same time (cos it'd be stupid to do both, right?).

I mean, an engine that *ignores* the driver input?

Not that that's uncommon these days, just a little bit annoying that you're losing control.

didnt someone mention this the other day and said that if you double tap the throttle while braking it will let you keep the rev's up?
