John Mitchell JMR Ltd 4WD 16V Turbo Corrado Build

Recommended Posts

Thanks Sean, after a significant prototype build investment, we most definitely will be looking to production for a return. We are planning to exhibit my Corrado around the Shows throughout this year. Look forward to seeing you.

What an exceptional piece of engineering, John. Really hope to have the chance to see this incredible machine in the metal at some point. Seriously awesome work.

Thank you all for your encouraging response to my post. I forget now just how many times my car has undergone change and indeed how many modified engines I have bolted into it over the 22 years of ownership. 3 evolutions of the original 8V PG engine, 4 evolutions of our 16VG60 engine and now this latest 16V 2.0 Turbo. I think that will really have to be it, ----- well for now eh .

The last three years working on this latest metamorphoses, has been intense. Every aspect of the car has come under the spotlight. The rear of the chassis has been cut out and completely rebuilt, the body has been taken back to bare metal and re-painted, the drivetrain and transmission have been completely re-designed and replaced, the fuelling system totally re-designed and replaced, the braking system re-designed for the 4WD, the wiring harness and engine management re-designed and replaced and the engine built up from an idea that first popped into my head back in the mid 90's, when I was playing with a Formula 3.

Along the way we have inspired the development of a carbon fibre tailgate, designed and developed an all new mechanical centre differential, designed and manufactured numerous components that just didn't exist at all in the aftermarket. What a journey. I can't profess to have enjoyed every aspect of the build, as indeed there were many hours of frustration, but it has been like giving birth to another child, in as much as the pain is never truly forgotten but the delight of the revelation brings on a new and stronger emotion, so my Wife tells me

We will be taking the Corrado to a number of shows around the country throughout 2016 and hope to be entering a some of the sprint 1/4 mile events. We look forward to be back out amongst like minded soles and re-kindling past and new friendships. Besides which after a build like this, we really do need to get out more, a lot more

One question John. Is this project really just a pet project for yourself / JMR or have you done it to develop some new solutions for aftermarket parts for the Corrado? What I mean by that is will you be selling a new range of products off the back of this work (and if so, what kind of stuff?) or has it just been done really for fun? :)

I just gotta love you Jim , no messing, straight in there with the key issues and as I say you've got to like straight talking folks

In answer to your questions, I would say yes to all of it TBH.

For me, it is the build I always had in mind but with extras coming from my ever growing thirst for fresh ideas. With regard to the all new product and build configuration, these features once thoroughly tested will be developed into production items made available for our clients. As to what in detail will be made available is yet to become clear, but I can certainly say our centre diff and a lot of the engine build components will be JMR exclusive products.

Now, my turn Jim, how can we help you?

Great. My question was genuine to find out if there were new products in the pipeline, as I'm always excited when I hear folks such as yourselves are developing aftermarket solutions to help keep these wonderful cars on the roads - especially as VW are so steadily trying to cut off the parts supply!! I think I speak for many of us when I say that, whilst they might be more bespoke solutions for a limited number of potential customers, it's really appreciated! That and building such a flagship car which will get more interest in the Corrado generally.

Sadly nothing I'm looking for at the moment - my car is in bits with a poorly engine so will be some time before it's back on the road. I will of course always bear you guys in mind for parts, as you've outlasted a lot of others who've been and gone, and the one time I did deal with you I was extremely impressed at the level of service I received (you supplied a Miltek downpipe for my MK4 Golf GT TDI quite some years back!) :)

Bless you Jim, it is and has always been a pleasure. You are so right as regards the available support for this outstanding Coupe. Both myself and Troy are deeply passionate about our specialist status and in particular all things Corrado. The build he has in mind is going to be equally exquisite and again we are already developing new equipment for his Corrado. Sure we know our personal cars are not for the purist, but I completely agree that they do however keep the Corrado "alive" and a point of interest. That said, I have a place in my heart for every Corrado, because they all have a story and an owner with a dream they chase for it. It's not just a business proposition, what we do daily at JMR, we always have at least two Corrados in the workshop and I hope that will always be the case.

John, we may certainly have to have chats about commissioning another undertray! I've been looking for a functional diffuser for a while too, so if you do decided to productise any parts developed, as I'm sure there's lots more little tricks learned, then certainly reach out here and I'm sure you'll have a lot of interested folks. :-)

Thank you for your interest. We will be testing my Corrado over the coming weeks. Once we have had the time to evaluate all the individual components and confirm their viability, then indeed we will be looking to market them as JMR products. We will make new product known to the Corrado ownership as soon as it becomes available. We hope to give everyone attending the shows this year a chance to view our Corrado and at some to see it in action.

This looks to be a very well engineered and unique car and the finish is great, can't wait to see it. Have to say it's nice to see someone taking the Corrado further down the road regarding modern upgrades, for me the Corrado just seems to be disappearing with age as more modern stuff appears on the scene but I guess that will happen with all cars.

I'll be keeping an eye on the progress.

The Corrado was gifted with classic coupe styling, many believe that its timeless in pure form. I am one of those, indeed I would go further to suggest that with the appropriate modification to its engineering it can square up to many modern offerings. Cars only fade away when a passion for them is allowed to die. The Corrado was never built to please the masses and has always had to fight for its place and recognition. To own a Corrado is being different, to own a unique Corrado, is.

Made from scratch after having made a template. The vents were bonded into the final item. It's made from fire retardant ABS plastic, to afford it durability and safe characteristics in a worst case scenario. ABS was also used to protect the dry sump system and the more sensitive engine compartment lower components from impact or road debris. We intend to introduce these to order. The under tray for my Corrado has been made to suit the RS front bumper, but we are making another style for the OEM bumper.

Hi Kev, the plenum I bought from Mike Jenvey. A product he was breaking onto the Motorsport market just at the right time for my ITB intake requirement. It was this or make something for ourselves. Fortunately we could accommodate my Jenvey 55's with air horns into this plenum, it was tight but just nice.

Awesome! Enclosed TBs with a turbo, it doesn't get much better than that!
