  1. If I connect a voltmeter or oscilloscope between each of the 3 middle connections and earth on the coil pack connector I should see an oscillating 12v waveform whilst the engine is cranking. Am I right in thinking this? If true it should be an easy way of checking the electrics prior to coil pack.
  2. Just tried to start the car and it's been lazy and can't be bothered to go! Found out that there is no spark, it has been running perfectly until tonight. Ideas please! VAGCOM shows engine speed sensor fault only, which I assume it would as engine isn't running. I don't fance changing random parts on the ignition system but fancy tackling it in a logical order (but don't know what that logical order should be!) Car is '93 VR6. Any help or ideas gratefully accepted.
  3. I've just had a Miltek system fitted because original system had a fist sized hole through middle box and MOT man wouldn't write a ticket out! Overall pretty happy with it, but slightly more raspy than original, and has a very slight rattle, I think it is just catching the body somewhere. If I could have afforded the labour charges I would have fitted an original system, but I couldn't. That was the deciding factor. Anyway, I was under the belief that fitting a free flowing exhaust instantly gave you a 100bhp power increase, well thats what the local Corsa driving burberry wearing gentleman told me!! ;)

    VR6 Cutting out

I'd be tempted to try the ignition switch, seems to be a favorite niggle of other people at the minute.
  5. Spotted M plate, dark coloured one at 5pm this evening in Grimsargh, near Preston, Lancs. Anyone?
  6. Blue (aqua?) VR6 N***TOV, at Lymm truckstop just off M6 J20 this morning. looked standard bar peugeot badged alloys.
  7. biggrim, It may have been a Volkswagon, at a guess!!
  8. I used my proper name David Thornber on the 480 board, and before the facelift to the newer board, 'nutter' (I think, so long ago!) Good luck on your search, you'll not regret it.
  9. Hello there, do I recognise your name from the volvo 480 club europe forum (now sadly departed)? I had a 480 turbo prior to my C VR6. I've actually had 2 turbos(with bleed valves around 0.9 bar boost IIRC, but std ECU) and 1 ES in my time. Dunno about autoboxes however but manual version of 480 turbo is no match for VR6 'rado, at least in the state of tune mine was in. Get VR over 4000rpm and it takes off like a scalded cat! Get one, you know it makes sense!!
  10. If it's anything like my pug 406 works car, the indicators are my biggest problem, after indicating right and self-cancelling, it usually puts the left one on by itself, has been several miles in the past before I notice. got used to this 'feature' now though. Sat-nav was a problem on mine cause it's got track-star fitted and the GPS aerial for the trackstar was interfering with the satnav somehow, it was usually about 55 miles out! 'Turn right now' commands from a lady behind the dashboard was quite funny when in the outside lane of the motorway. They cured it by moving the aerials to different positions, now it's a useful tool, but mine uses a remotecontrol to use it which is a pain when driving (and probably a bit naughty!)
  11. Got it legal again, new Miltek exhaust fitted for Xmas. My local garage who does the MOT says it is fitted really well, so no complaints. Got it fitted at Dubsport FYI. I just get a slight knocking over some bumps which appears to be the tailpipe catching the bumper cut-out.
  12. True, you live and learn... yellow sensor turned out to be duff as well as the stat, so nothing really lost.
  13. It's a bit fiddly due to lack of room, but easy enough. One thing that caught me out was finding all 3 of the bolts that hold the housing to the engine, one of them is in quite a deep part of the casting and took me a while to find. The Corrado Culb of America has quite a good write up on its tech tips section. I didn't use extra sealant, but had a slight leak so I probably should have, leak now stopped. Used original housings, and replaced blue and Yellow (now black) sensors. Left 3rd one alone as it's redundant on non a/c cars.
  14. Hmm, I've just put it all back together with a new stat and coolant. Just realised the old one hasn't been right since I bought the car a year ago. Engine temperature is now around 80-90 degrees C, where-as is used to be below 70. Well worth the hassle.
  15. White 16v, G888*** seen today at 11am, you were parked at one of units near John Carr motorcycles, Claughton-on-Brock. I was getting bike MOT'd at the time.
  16. They used to use an unmarked Ford Galaxy (may still do, haven't seen it for a few months), usually parked on a bridge near J24 on the M6 southbound. You could see lasergun lens through partially open back window. I wouldn't put anything past them when it comes to raising revenue!
  17. It's the distributor, you'll recognise it as it has 5 thick HT cables coming from it, 1 to each spark plug and another to the coil.
  18. I've just taken 'stat out, ready to replace with new one later in week, what a bugger of a job, the Bentley manual only showed 1 bolt holding asembly to engine, took a while to find the 'hidden' short bolt! What do you good people recommend to do with the hose clips, replace with jubilee clips, use originals or replace with OE clips? Antifreeze - it's had blue stuff in, dunno what kind. Does VW's G12+ stuff make much difference and will it mix ok with the remnents in my cooling system, or should I run it with plain water to flush dreggs of blue stuff out, then drain and refill?
  19. Admittedly I don't know the 1.8 16v motor at all, but I dont think the strap to the bonnet is the problem, this is usually there to prevent a static charge build up on the bonnet. The engine to bulkhead strap is the important one, check if this is in good condition, but as engine will fire fine when cold I don't suspect this. Sounds as though fuel vaporisation is a possible problem. Do you have any fuel lines running near to the exhaust manifold. and no heat shield? If so problem is possibly heat soak into the fuel line causing a vapour lock and no fuel to engine, this is only apparent with engine hot. Like I said at the beginning I don't know your engine and could be talking complete rubbish!
  20. Dunno where mine was bought from originally, I bought it privately from a guy in Worthing, West Sussex. (the joys of Ebay after a few beers!! No regrets though). It appears to have spent a lot of its life around Ipswich, London and W Sussex. edit: I lie, it was supplies new by Skipper of Cheltenham, and registered to what appears to be a company in Coventry on the 23/08/93.

    G60 or VR6

You're telling me, at the last service it will ever have at a VW garage they lost 2 cylinders from the car  they thought it was a 16v. And even got the registration wrong, even though it is written in large font on both the front and rear of the car  To be fair the registration bit was probably a typo, they put a H instead of a G. It makes me wonder though...
  22. Longridge - mine doesn't get used that much cause I have a car for work, but aren't allowed private miles in it.
  23. Welcome, good to see another C on the board from the same neck of the woods!
  24. I had similar, when I asked for a set of Lupo wipers, the parts guy guessed it was for a Corrado.
