  1. Oh god, here he goes again! Grass is greener syndrome and will invariably regret it, again

Well, my work colleague has a Fiesta ST. She knows her cars and has owned pretty much all the hot hatches, inc a MK5 GTI DSG.

She loves the ST, but me personally, I hate it, and here are the reasons why:-

Noisy, boomy exhaust in the cabin

    Horrendous ride quality

    Fiestas are everywhere

    Very girly proportions and styling

    Build quality strictly average

Honestly, I've been in it a few times now as she volunteers to drive us to team lunches etc, and the ride is just unrelenting, especially in the back.

Don't be sucked in by the all mega praise until you've driven one yourself, and do seek out some schitt roads. Her old MK5 was like a limo by comparison. Fine if you're a spotty yooooouth (said in a Clarskon voice) but not if you're as old as Clarkson.

  2. Thankfully mine now stays in a garage all winter but a windscreen cover is always useful and costs about a fiver, and as for de-icer I always use the spray type bottles not tins, works much better!

Yeah, Tesco's cans of de-icer just makes the ice even icier, lol.

  3. Be thankful you don't own a car that costs £475 per year to tax

That is a silly mentality. If you can afford to buy and run a car that belches out a high CO2/Km, you can afford the tax.

If you buy a 5 bed detached house, expect a high band council tax.

Has logic and common sense evaporated from the earth over the past decade or something?

  4. I have VT mounts all round and have noticed no additional vibration in the cabin. I did however just get the competition front. The rear and GB mounts were fast road so a little more forgiving

Exactly what I and a few others had and we defo noticed more vibration. An increase in transmission whine as well. It's clearly a subjective thing because I find the VR6 engine far from smooth, but it's acceptable with the stock mounts.

Either way, if you do uprate the mounts, be aware it's the gearbox one that transmits the most noise and vibration into the cabin. The front one bolts to a cross member which is isolated from the body by rubber mountings.

  5. I bet that Stratos is worth a few bob now!!

Yeah the 6R4s were epic and a very misunderstood car! "A Metro??! Are you serious?" Yep, very! It's as much a Metro as the Escort Cosworth is erm, an Escort, lol!

Yeah it's the S1s on anti-lag as they slid round the corners I missed. I was too young to see it before they banned it unfortunately.

  6. I grew out of mine because it was a daily and swerving around to avoid pot holes was getting tiring. There was no way to get the ride quality I wanted from the Corrado, short of retrofitting the entire MK5 chassis and running gear to it, so I gave up. It was a simple question of accept it for what it is, or move on. So using women as the metaphor again, I chopped her in for a younger and firmer model :D

  7. My Edition 30 has been great too. Only had a few of things on that list and the rattling in mine is probably down to previous owners. I pulled a load of amp wiring out of it, so it's stands to reason half the clips are missing from most of the panels!

It does feel solid though. French cars just 'feel' flimsy and cheaply made.

  8. Only just noticed this. I miss that rear end shot. There's just something about Ice Grey :)

Sorry to read of your throttle woes. I never had any of those problems. I kind of wish I had left it with the DTA standalone as it was faultless, but I was persuaded to go standard management. Plus selling a car with a standalone to a complete newbie would have been a nightmare, so stock management was the way to go. The 6 wires that form the pedal loom, are they chaffing on anything? I seem to remember there wasn't an abundance of room to run that without it snagging on the clutch and brake pedals etc. Sounds to me like a signal is being shorted in the pedal or throttle loom. Do you have VCDS to interrogate the ECU?

If you see anything related to throttle or pedal, it's probably loom related. If you see anything related to Power supply, it's probably relay related as your chap suggested.

Vince at Stealth racing did the loom for me, so he might be a good person to diagnose it, but it's a hell of a trek from where you are!

  9. I would love to have seen the group B rally monsters with my own eyes. Top fuel drag cars are another must see / hear in the flesh.

These days, I'd be happier just touring the paddocks and looking at the kit. A bit like Guy Martin's Pikes Peak attempt. Seeing him turbo his bike engine is far more interesting that watching it on the road. It's the same as football. Watching it is dull as schitt, but actually playing it is good.

  10. Love that Renault vid :D

I don't think German cars deserve their reputation for quality anymore. And they certainly don't have a superior high ground to mock French cars with anymore, either.

I mean, the list of TSBs for the MK5 GTI is as long as your arm. TSBs being the fault notices dealerships receive from HO.

Off the top of my head:-

    Rusty front wings

    Rusty sills

    Rust around tailgate release badge

    Fuel line tapping the floor

Leaking servo (hissing sound in cabin)

Defective piston rings causing huge oil consumption

    Front PCV breather valve failure

Split diaphragm in the diverter valve

    Interior movement sensor failure

    Alarm siren failure

    Vehicle tilt sensor failure

    Door lock module failure

In-tank pump overheating and causing fuel starvation

Defective low pressure sensor on mechanical fuel pump

    Doors dropping

    Boot light failure

    Etc

And they rattle and squeak just as much as the MK4.

Obviously not every problem will be exhibited in every car and most of these are discovered in America first, due to the massive mileages they do, but it's still pretty schitt isn't it?

To go from the classic 80s MK2 Golf 'earring' advert, to that..... it's a poor show from VW.

Doesn't bother me personally. A car without issues is a very dull one indeed. I love having a reason to use my tools :D

  11. I could watch this all day long

Who wants to watch cars that handle like trains on rails?

    Agreed.

The most exciting moments in the US Grand Prix this weekend were bits of astro turf being ripped off and Grogan deliberately driving off the track because he was in a strop.

  12. Yeah, changing tyres in 3 seconds is proper edge of your seat stuff isn't it. Personally, I feel it's an inherently dull sport because of the cars being so fragile and all the stupid rules. It's worse then bloody golf for anal rules and regulations. If the cars were more stout and the rules relaxed a bit, there could be some proper bullying in the corners for a bit of excitement. Get rid of that corrupt little dwarf and replace him with someone driven by sport instead of smarming sponsors.

If I had my way, there would be 1 rule: It's every man for himself, just get to the finish line however you see fit. You drivers are being paid millions, after all. Earn ya f'ckin keep.

  13. Would they not still have to meet some kind of strength test and safety rating though or can they just be splashed out any old how ?

If they are sourced from the far east (highly likely), they will be subject to the same safety and quality standards that their £2.99 phone chargers are. I.e. they can burn your house down!

  14. Sounds great if it comes off . I will stick my neck out here though and end up being shot down . I can't seem to get into F1 . WRC is more my bag . I think it's great to watch although because of the stages , you don't get to see the whole thing , unlike F1 . I regularly watch the VW team on the net .

No one's going to shoot you down for having your own opinion and preference! I hate it as well! Bureaucratic horse shat and about as interesting as paper puree.
