  1. Nice choice! I always liked the look of these. A friend of mine has one, though never actually been out in it.

Only weak spot that I'm aware of from his experience is the dampers - he's had to have most of them changed in the last couple of years due to them failing and leaking - otherwise it's been pretty bombproof.

  2. Certainly don't take this as gospel but my understanding is that if running relatively low levels of boost in a basic supercharged application, stock compression should be OK. You only need to consider lowering the compression if you plan to put a fair bit more power through or go for higher boost.

So it really depends if this modification is all you plan to do for now, or whether you plan to dial it up a bit in the future - in which case, with the head coming off anyway, you should consider putting in the groundwork now to handle higher power later on down the road.

How are you planning to fit / mount the eaton charger? Given the design of it, it doesn't strike me as especially well suited for the VR6 when compared to say the Z-Engineering type which sits where the airbox does. The eaton would need mounting up somehow in front or behind the block? Looking around on Google image search there have certainly been some interesting solutions to squeeze one into a VR6 engine bay!! :)

Awesome, comprehensive build thread of an M90 into a VR6 (Passat) here:

  3. Think I would struggle to live with the noise of an R32... I feel like I am alone here but that raspy exhaust note is right up there in grating noises with a screaming shouty VTEC motor. Much much prefer the more chesty bellow of our humble VR6 motors instead.

Would definitely take a 2.0 turbo motor in a GTI/Golf R/Leon Cupra/S3/Octavia VRS type application I think. Quiet refinement and lovely turbo torque.

  4. The VW workshop manual actually says that you need to run the engine at something like 3,000RPM for a couple of minutes as this should fully charge up the tappets. It seems a bit er.. interesting.. given that you're attempting to cure a lack of lubrication by increasing the engine revs. But just let it run, rev it up a bit, take it for a drive if you can - it should quieten down.

  5. If indeed it is just top end ticking, rather than knocking, then it's not uncommon for the tappets to be noisy. Bear in mind they've been totally drained of all oil and are bone dry.

Did you literally just start it up bone dry, or did you pull the fuel pump relay and crank it for a while to build up oil pressure?

  6. Wow - I actually gave some useful technical information that helped resolve the problem. Pinch me, I'm dreaming :) Glad I could help! :)

How far will it open before stopping? I wonder if something is jammed in the mechanism somewhere, stopping it from fully opening. The Corrado sunroof is, sadly, a notorious problem spot so you certainly aren't the first and won't be the last to run into problems with one! :(

  7. I did this (admittedly not very good but it was 13 years ago!) photoshop of a mashup with the then pretty new R32 Golf. Think it works better using a newer mark of Golf definitely.

It's not something I'd ever do to a Corrado myself, but I've certainly seen much worse over the years. Looks like it was well executed.

In fact the more I see it, the more I like it. I always thought I was a total 'original Corrado' purist but I think it looks superb.
