1.8T Engine conversion cost

Recommended Posts

If youre thinking of a VR, why not buy one off ebay (with leather) for 2 to 3 grand, then stick a 24v lump in it for 3 grand. Lot less than 10k!!

If I don't leave the country this year, which is very possible, my shed of a Corrado is getting a 1.8T conversion.

I assume that if the G60 'box fits then so does the 16v? What about the clutch?

The 16v box should bolt up along with the flywheel and clutch assembly, one thing I have been having trouble finding out about is using the kjet fueling system. Anyone got any info?

It would be ideal man, the twin pumps that the 16v use run a higher pressure than the single one that the G60 uses, over engineered, i converted my rad to G60 2 chrimbo's ago, now ive got a decent job and shizz im goin 20vt like, way forward i rekon

My 20V corrado was a 16v before and uses the 16v fuel pumps which are ideal although the g60 pump is more than up to the job too. 16v gearbox does bolt straight up too although i used an 02J in mine. I've done a few conversions now so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Yeah, using the K-Jet fuel pumps I understand - it makes perfect sense. It just sounded like the question was asking about using the whole K-Jet system!

What management are you using mk2_20vt...and what's an 02J gearbox from?

ving60, how long did it take for the conversion?

It took about 3-weeks which was a pain as i had to use public transport  Worth it in the end though.

Cheers Bally, mines not been washed in that photo but they do look like twins

I'm running QPEng management which is the same as on Vince's. With a BAM engine it ups the BHP to approx. 270BHP.

The 02J 'box in mine is from a Mk4 GTI, ratios seem pretty similar to the 16v 'box.

You could do the conversion in a week if you are handy with the spanners. Hardest bit is the wiring if you don't use the QPEng plug and play kit.

bally your car is just like mine too in those pics.

a2j boxes are from later cars ie mk4 onwards as stated. 02m is the 6 speed version although theres are some 5 speed 02m boxes too used in TT.

anybody ever tried to tune a s1 escort turbo. kjet was bob out of the box. skip it. the pumps however are good for 360lbs/ft so im told. use a G60 one to feed the kjet or 044 bosch pump.

What type of issue did you guys have as you installed. where did the main issues lie.

Ok, so it can be done for 3.5k if someone else does it, but how much is it going to cost if it is a DIY job, with a 225 block standard with FMIC and re-map?? Might be tempted to keep the Rado if it isn't too much!

ving60 what rear engine bracket did you use as my mate rav has a 225bhp tt lump in his mk3 golf and said the rear mount was a bit of a headache (something to do with the piping to the turbo). Also do all the qpe kits come with the switchable boost if i remember rightly his is 270bhp at 0.7bar and switches to 365bhp at 1.5bar!

have you considered the 180bhp ko3s lump as these are more cheaper than the 225bhp lumps but can be mapped to over 200bhp aswell

good thread lads im going to give darren a ring and have a chat! as i want to get FMIC, S.N.S 5.5 chip and red top injectors which will cost a fair bit of money now after reading this thread! im thinking of selling the g60 engine adding the extra money for the other jobs i got planned for summer! and going for the 225bhp lump! whats is the torque on these engines? cheers andy

p.s also from reading this thread am i right in saying its easier to do this conversion than a 24v v6 swap!

iow_corrado_g60, think ya should still get the FMIC, S.N.S 5.5 chip and red top injectors then i can buy them of ya later when u do the conversion :) don't reckon i'll be able to afford the turbo conversion for a while, unless i source all the bits meself an get someone to do it for me MR RENSHAW WHERE ARE U???????

It's the standard engine mount as i've got a custom s/s down pipe.

yuo could just turbo your 16vs though if you have um instead of using a full 20v motor. would be cheaper for 300+. no k03,k03s or k04 i know of will make 300hp. the 365bhp at 1.56 bar sounds like a vf34 or so. A subaru does the same figures at the same level. looks like the 1.8t is around the same flow and efficiency levels as a EJ20T.

any clearence issues between the braking system and the turbo?

K04 Turbo on the 225BHP engines has to have a bit of a funky downpipe to clear the rear engine mount and steering U/J. K03 and K03s are much easier as the outlet points down instead of to the side.

Bobby, Ravi's MK3 uses the QPEng kit too, you can switch the boost off so it will be

Ballpark figure for DIY is probably about 3k. Bargain 20v engines are pretty scarce at the moment.

Do it yourself mate - for free :-) If you've got the tools, the time, the space and good mechanical skills, conversions aren't difficult.

...and words are cheap!

He actually quite spot on tho, conversions arent too tricky as long as you plan it out and use you head. Im also assuming you will have some engineering savvy (should go without saying, shouldnt buy a rad unless you know how to weild a spanner  )
