OEM+ what would you buy and why

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, a little bit of fun here.

If your going for an OEM+ build what would you buy and why.

Now personally I would do the following give or take.

Drivetrain

Taller 5th gear conversion

Replace all the bushes

Replace the mounts

Clutch and brakes

Upgrade the brakes to a nice set of 4 pots 312mm disc out front

Upgrade brake master

Upgrade calipers on the back

Braided lines

Updated clutch

Overhauled or new slave and master cylinder

Suspension and wheels

A good quality suspension kit with about a 30mm drop

Set of 16's light weight Motorsport alloys with a very good performing tyre.

Interior

Retrim

Custom door pods

Nice custom install but stealthy at the same time

Engine

For the vr a Bec induction kit, mated with 263 cams and remap accordingly

New hoses throughout, bottles and reservoirs.

Tidy up of wiring and routing to clean the bay a bit.

Exterior

Minimal but small custom touches to grills, lights

Highly detailed paint work.

Now bearing in mind the above I would reckon a 5-7k budget would do the above. For me I think that would really freshen up the feel of the car, make it stand out in the vw scene without going show car style. I would personally love to put the time and money into my car.

What about you guys and gals.

Define oem+?

Like your suggestions, I'd do many of the things you have. For me I'd keep the exterior and interior almost completely standard but with all red rears and clear side repeaters, and a über rare steering wheel... BBS or something period.

Wheels are the tricky thing. I'd probably hunt down some 16' speedlines but there are very few about.

My members gallery shows what I would do. We buy a Corrado because we love the way it looks. So why mess with that?

Granted, mechanically it shows its age, so refresh the underside and a slight drop to improve handling, uprated brakes but nothing too drastic, and a BMC CDA.

Provided the car is in a good state when purchased, imo there's no need to do anything else. After that, it's down to personal preference on the little details.

Pretty much that minus the RS301's. They've, for me, been done to death on the Corrado. And no one outside of the VW scene seems to like them.

No rust and a set of wipers that work.

Oh and design for the heater controls that is fit for purpose!

HTH

Use the early slider controls, may not look much,BUT they work

For a G60 I would replicate how my previous car was built.

1) Replace the tired cloth grey interior with a stock, good condition black leather interior + the black A,B and C pillar trims, dash, etc.

2) JMR stage 4 charger and 68mm pulley

3) CTN diesel gearbox (my G60 returned 35 mpg on a steady run with this box fitted)

4) KW variant 1 coilover kit - handled fantastic on 16's

5) Do the 5 stud hub conversion (for a greater choice in wheels)

6) VR6 front brake set up and mk4 golf rear calipers

7) Shot blast and powder coat all running gear and replace bushes/components where necessary.

No wrong answer for this really..

So long as it looks like it could have been factory or is period correct and all parts compliment each other then you are on to a winner..

Very safe way of modifying, doesn't change much from original which if you like the original package then is just putting your own mark on the car..

So many on here look down their noses at the 20vt conversions,

Mine looks factory fitted, nearly twice the power it left the factory with. And 50 to the gallon on a good run

What's not to like !

Bet your 20v works better than my VR6 - car's on drive, engine's in shed!

I don't think there is an anti 20v feeling on here really, it's definitely a forum with a bias to na 6 cylinders but I think pretty much anyone in here would fit the 20v if there wasn't a 6 cylinder alternative.

I'd even be as bold to say that the 20v conversion is a better idea than the 24v, 6 pot noise aside.

Now if there was an easy 24v turbo option off the shelf, the only thing the 20v would have would be economy!

I like the conversion, but love the noise the v6 makes and the history of the engineering behind it, which i think is why so many stick with it

I think if i had a 16v and i was looking to upgrade i'd look at the 20vt conversion but the vr I would turbo, the g60 i would tune

or in real life, i would just keep the vr because its all I can afford :bonk:
