Walk ....... endof. :D

Yeah just been thinking that myself.... would save a fortune *:) I reckon with new tappets approx £200.... Cheers Scott

Hi All, I have just been down to the VW specialist for my car to be looked over as this smoking problem I have is driving me nuts *:( Anyway the damage is that I have worn valve guides / stem seals… so the head needs to come off…. Now I’m thinking that the engine has done 105k miles now so a re-con head is a wise choice…. But I can either get my VW specialist to do it at all a all in price of circa £550 or I can do the job myself and source a stage 1 pack recon head from somewhere for about the same money…. I have sourced a re-con head through hiflowheads for £400 – anyone heard of these guys? TSR want £595, Stealth about the same I’m told. Any advice or suggestions appreciated!!! Cheers Scott

I've got the same problem - just had it checked by specialist and he reckons seals/guide problem so the head needs to come off - not one to do it by halves am going to source a flowed and ported recon head....

Dunlop SP 2000's seem very good in the dry..... very soft tyre though so wear quite quickly *:(
-
Cheers mate - am going to do the stripping / fitting myself to save on the labour plus never worked on a VR6 before so will be experience :D I want to send the head to someone who knows what they doing - so will give Stealth a call and see how much they want and how long it would take although I have a superb engineering guy up here who only works for trade and would sort me out.... You reckon would be worth replacing tappets? - or can they be cleaned out on these engines? - Ive cleaned a few on a C20XE engine..... Cheers Scott

Engine has done 103k *:) Well after a lengthy idle - I boot it and it smokes then clears.... when moving it only ever smokes on the over-run after booting like you say... even then not all the time... So it looks like a valve stem seal job which to be honest I'm not worried about - will do the job myself as its pretty common on these engines to need valve stem seal jobs around the mileage I have....... Any ideas how much to re-con a VR head? Cheers Kev! Scott

Yup 192bhp and 185lbft torque.... 8) Cheers Kev - just need to sort this smoke problem out *:(
-
Off with its head then  Surprised compression is low when I got 192bhp ??? - standard - no mods...... :?
-
Mmmmmmmmmmmm - I take a lot of convincing *:) LOL Looks like its going to be moved then or binned  Cheers! Scott

Some good info there guys - cheers!!! I might re allocate the carbon canister and perhaps even get a new one to keep in line with emmisions lol Car was rr'd at Dubsport about two months ago in standard form with 191.6 bhp and 185.9 lbft Torque...... :D
-
I'll prob remove the cover then mate - left fan looking from front of car - ie. closest to AFM??? or other side? I dont want to mess with the carbon canister - VW put it there for a reason *;) You reckon will be worth doing a ECU reset for filter? - new values?

I prefer sleeper feel too ... hence I wont be touching the outside of the car at all..... a few minor mods to engine, suspension and brakes (now done)... should result in about 220bhp without going mad *:) I like the looks of the VR6 as standard - I just wanted to improve the in gear response a little and the mods have planned for engine (chip, throttle body mod, filter and exhaust) will do this.... only doing suspension and brakes as after ten years they will feel tired although you wouldnt think so till you put new stuff on 8) Cold air feed has got me baffled though.... the original air box goes into the back of the headlight!!! :?

Rotten sills on a Corrado !!!!

Well… I have just put my RAM AIR on the VR6 and first impressions were that it seemed a bit quiet on tick over….. so off I goes for a drive….. lets the oil warm up…. 90degC and waited for a bit of open road to get the revs up…. 3500rpms and it starts whistling…mmmmm… 4000rpm…RROOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! – What the *~~%!!!!!!!!!!! – MAD!!! – absolutely mad so now I’m bombing round in 2nd gear everywhere at 4000rpm – lol *:) - and there was me thinking mpg would increase due to being more efficient....... mmmmm * Anyways after my antics anyone know how to sort the cold air feed – was told to direct it behind grills in bumper but the radiator is there and no space for the pipe!!!! – I have a 80mm diameter K & N air feed to use for it but no where to put it *:( And finally it might not put anymore bhp out but the throttle response is fantastic *:) GET ONE!

Im getting 10.5 bar on cylinder one......... others seem to be around 11.5 bar... So thats about 155psi in cylinder one and about 165 psi in rest? mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Anyone know the book compression figs for a VR6 or has had good figures from their VR and know what they are....??? Obviously its more important that they are consistant but Im after a ball park figure....... Cheers Scott
-
Thats common sense - and of course I am aware of that..... but even the E group agrees with what I say At the end of the day I guess it comes down to how it is looked after - but I still say its an 'agricultural engine' Scott

I have managed to source myself a RAM AIR induction filter for my VR6 for next to nothing .... what kind of gains / noise can I expect? Apparently the bracket and cold air feed is missing but that shouldnt be too much of a problem should it to create them? Cheers Scott

I would check for white smoke out of exhaust as if losing coolant then am sure you will see it..... failing that go for a long drive and get the revs up and engine nice and hot - head gasket problems will usually show then.... But the best way to test a head gasket is a leak down test - very few places do it though.......

I am quite aware of that being a qualified automotive engineer The newer Alfa V6 engines are far superior to the VR6's...... full stop. My engine runs sweet as a nut - no problems at all - all I was getting at is that the idle isnt silky smooth but doesnt show cause for concern. Scott
-
Well horses for courses and all that I can feel the idle of my car and have done of several other VR6's and stick to my guns that the idle is slightly 'off beat'... Ive had it checked by VW and VW Specialists and even compared it to various other VR6's and also checked VAGCOM and even the compressions to find no problems so make of that as you will :D
-
Care to explain your reasoning - I have sat in about half a dozen VR6's and they all do the same........... idle is never silky smooth

I have used them all and the best wax's I have come across in order of preference are: Meguiars Gold Class Wax (the daddies!!!) Zymol Car Wax Autogylm Gold Meguairs is fantastic stuff *:) Scott wrote: Also wash door shuts, wheel arches and petrol tank every week.......... Ahhhh.... a perfectionist! Too right

I'll be going - but likely to be with the CCGB.............
