  1. just a thought, is the expansion tank cap OK? if it's a black one it's the original and should be replaced with a blue one.
  2. see, the more I think about it the more I realise the 2L 8v was the pinacle of Corrado development, no (unreliable and heavy) sunroof, can sit three in the back with the flat bench, lightest engine and nimblest handling of all the corrados, most economical, and the superior fixed steering column as standard. :lol:
  3. shouldn't bother, they think subsidising the crushing of perfectly serviceable cars is a good idea, although there's no money left to do that again, thank god.
  4. I think all VW parts have a 2 year warranty, I'd imagine even the most robust parts items have a 'shelf life' after which date the part shouldn't be sold, even if it's a catch all '5 year' for example. I can see why they wouldn't want 'old' parts getting onto the market, mainly to simply remove the 'potential' for problems/bad press, but in reality we know most items keep for decades in a dark parts bin, it is a total waste of perfectly usable parts though in most cases, especially obselete or hard to find items.
  5. it's just an engine and transmission support beam, sits on inner wing tops and has two separate hooks one to support engine and the other to lower the g-box, (some beams only have one hook/lifter) the e-bay ad has the price :) £50 + £9 delivery

  7. I'd say no, in a side impact this must strengthen the floor and stop it buckling up and the sill caving inwards.
  8. excellent stuff! any plans to stick some new injectors on it, if the ones on it are original I'm sure it would help it run nice and smoothly, especially with the head, cams and manifold.
  9. I've had the box off the valver a few times, clutch alignment tool I tried was rubbish, but in the end it was easy to get near enough to get the box back on like pete_griff said. Like you say, it's a bit of hassle actually getting the box back on, think I'm going to get a twin hook engine support beam for when I do the 8v clutch this month, those boxes are pretty heavy to sit on your chest aren't they. Glad you've nearly got it done, some good stuff you've had to do to it you know will last a few years now.
  10. A fake rolex is one thing, but poor quality jewellery doesn't directly lead you to a fatal car accident. Saw a program a few years back about cheap pattern car parts in general, wishbones made out of really thin cheap steel etc, I'm surprised there haven't been any high profile cases of car parts leading to accidents, there must be a lot sub-standard stuff about - half of a couple of motor factors warehouses I know of for a start :lol:
  11. don't move a car without the driveshafts in the hubs though, from what I remember you will destroy the bearings if the weight of the car runs on a hub/bearing alone. So I guess the shaft and hub/hub nut effectively hold a damaged/worn bearing together.
  12. nope, pretty much impossible to diagnose front bearings without taking the driveshaft out, until they get very, very bad of course. With the hub free of the driveshaft, brakes etc, you soon see and hear any problem by spinning them. Driving the car, even when you get loud groaning from the bearings it's very hard to tell which side, best to do both anyway if they are original/same age.
  13. really? it should be, the hinged cover/flap has a tab on the top corner that the CL locks it down with.

  15. do you mean from the back right of the inlet manifold? - the vacuum connection that goes to the brake servo etc? if it's just the small bore vacuum pipe you can get lengths of that from any motor factor, and Halfords, GSF etc must do it. or is it a plastic connector that is bust? can't picture it on the 16v, is yours a 2L?

  17. quite a few of the companies that sell pattern badges have these too, I was given a few for free when I asked about them when I bought a badge at GTI international a year or two back
  18. my seat covers on the 8v have just been through the washing machine, came up great! a bit of a faff to remove but worth it, I was replacing bolsters anyway so it seemed like the right time to do it. On the 16v I just took the front seats out, sponge dabbed them with lots of water and carpet cleaner and dabbed the water off with paper towels, dried on a hot day in no time, they came up well too.
  19. I'll get an idea of the postage cost from work next week, with the metal frame and backing board it's going to be pretty heavy, doubt more than a tenner though. I notice your seats don't have the metal bars vertically down the back, perhaps this was a later style of interior? - will check on my 8v, don't think it makes any difference at all, they just seem to have deleted it from later seats. The back of the old spare 16v seats I have are black, not the grey floor carpet colour too, same on my actual 1990 16v car, I think all seats, regardless of interior have the black backs, which is handy.
  20. if you look inside the subframe there is a little 'C' (appropriately!) shaped raised bit, this seems to locate the bush and negates the need for the sleeve. I worried about this first time I changed a bushing, but put back together everything was nice and tight and responsive on the steering, so definately no movement of the bush on the bolt.
  21. yeah, probably, but rather than bodging it like that it might even be possible to fit an early hazard light to a late column switch, I'll have to compare my two. My 8v has a fixed column and the older style 16v had the retro fit and like kev says it's now solid as, even though the actual column was a second hand one from a polo and the bottom bearing is the original from the 165K corrado adjustable tube. Can't compare with the 8v at the moment as the top mounts have like a mile of play in them, it's like driving a 1970's transit :lol:
  22. oh spit :( sounds like what easypops described then, gearbox off job, I must admit when you seemed to say that no fluid level had gone down it did point to the hydraulic system being OK.
  23. :lol: yeah, but it only took 10 mins in the garage just now, I was actually intruiged anyway, one bit of a Corrado I've never attempted to take to bits :lol: It is a bit more involved than I thought though, those seats are quite complicated, lots of separate parts, no wonder VW never made any money out of the C.
