you seem to have managed to fit a bar type hangar exhaust to the hook type hangars on the early 16v :) I'm not sure how long the rubber hangars will last twisted like that. Nice to see a standard looking early 16v though, not a common sight.

you've been reading the daily mail predictions of a mini-ice-age winter on the way haven't you Jim? :)

The real cost of a genuine VAG VR6 exhaust...
davidwort replied to Joss_Durnan's topic in Engine Bay
A grand might seem expensive, well it is! ... But consider that plenty of aftermarket stainless exhausts are likely to crack at joints or mountings within a few years and will probably foul on something under the car and will never be perfectly tuned to the engine, not to mention noisier, and all of a sudden a 400 quid aftermarket system doesn't look so much of a bargain. The cheap pattern mild steel ones for under 200 will rust before you've hooked all the hangars up :) -
You could take the whole thing apart and replace the LCD and the board it's soldered too, but if it's a non-digital trip/mileage early clocks set then a complete instrument cluster shouldn't be much second hand, to broaden the search a passat unit will work too, although 8v cars will have different rev counter modules, which could be swapped.

I wondered this a while ago, some kind person explained they are the abs relays, passing the good deed on :)

Mk2 or mk3 gti/vr plus axle parts depending on 4cyl or vr6 Corrado

A guy recently had water in his air filter causing similar problems

Help car a non starter was fixed now back to non starting HELP!!

A few seconds buzz from behind you in the fuel tank from the pump when you turn the key to ign on position. -
I'm sure you can get these from gsf and ther factors, the part is common to 8v vw's too like the mk2 golf
-
You can ask for whatever you want :) but toe should be zero, I.e. wheels parallel, camber is more personal preference and can be affected by tyre and wheel choice too, but the factory spec of around 1 degree negative camber is usually about right
-
If the variable resistor is worn there might not be much you can do about it, I used a mk3 golf sender and float which are a totally different shape to the corrado one as the tank is different, just bent the arm and with a bit of trial and error it reads just fine :)

The 'correct' way to do it is on the RHS only, not exactly sure why, but it may have something to do with tyre/wishbone clearance on full lock, Bentley states 406mm from inner track rod joint face to balljoint centre line, G60/16v is shorter (not plus suspension) and 4cyl cars with factory 205 tyres may be different again (different track rod inner joints). I can't figure out 'in-my-head' why adjusting both is a real problem and I've always adjusted both to get the steering wheel straight, doesn't affect steering centering or anything and it's never enough to noticeably affect turning circle left or right hand.

Are these vr6 mounts? Or is it a type of mount I've not seen over the years, might be an interesting replacement for the solid 02a bg mount? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-VW-Passat-mk3-mk4-1-9-TD-TDI-2-0-16v-rear-lower-engine-mount-RH-/321009102498?_trksid=p5197.m1997&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D16%26meid%3D3589777709919759583%26pid%3D100016%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D4%26sd%3D281023335580%26

Thinking of buying an MG TF 160, anyone had one ?
davidwort replied to daleyboy's topic in General Car Chat
You've got a point, and to be fair I'm a bit jealous seeing as they are 2 seat mid engined rwd sports cars, and probably less 'hair-dresser' than any of the alternatives and a few more creature comforts than a plastic lotus :) -

no headgasket technology gets you away from the simple fact they have such a small coolant capacity, which is a good design for warming up quick and efficiency, but that any small leak of coolant can overheat and damage the head, I'd be checking the coolant level every 5 minutes. They also seem to have the electrics quality of a old Fiat, I've followed numerous MGF's with random lights coming on at the back or stuck on, remember, these things were built in Birmingham, same people responsible for the Rover SD1 & 800! -

I'm struggling to find any reason to choose an mgf over an mx5, my sister had a recent mx5, 2L special edition, auto hard roof etc, fantastic car and amazing build quality. I suppose if working on cars is a major hobby then the mgf might give you more opportunities :) -
No Corrado For Me Its All About Polo 6n's (isnt really)
davidwort replied to Greatraz12's topic in Members Gallery
Funny little cars the polos, always had a soft spot for them but they've always been a bit plastic-fantastic inside, there's a lot of corrado DNA in there though, in fact the early Ibiza cupras were polos with real corrado spirit IMO :) -
It's only to stop clutch dust getting in there, my valver one has been torn for years.

just google the bearing size/number: http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=5076 about a fiver delivered

I swear that's the same bearing (6203) that I just changed on my washing machine

Hall sender is the distributor rotor arm position sensor built into the distributor side, the 3 wire connection can get broken wires but the sensor itself can fail, to test you need an led test light connected to the end pins of the ignition control unit, and spin the engine over, a pic of this is in another post recently from me on a similar subject. With no hall sender signal the ignition will cut completely from the coil, so no spark for any plug.

A KFC box full of chicken bones under the seat of my gti... Nice... my 8v C was full of crap, about 20 biros wedged everywhere, kept finding them for weeks, a set of hairdresser scissors, loads of small change, lots of random screws, clips etc - but nothing vw?, a cd changer with about 10 CDs in it and a full size sponge football in the boot.
-
No sunroof on my 8v, which is nice in some ways, but the roof tilted is good for ventilation sometimes, might consider a door glass wind deflector though, be good as wind noise is bad on motorway but a slightly open window helps the blower fan out. I've seen a few welded up gutters that have cracked or uneven filler, you want a really good body shop to do those properly.
-
Crank sensor? No such thing on a 9a 16v, more likely to be a hall sender on the dizzy as it sounds more like an ignition problem than fuelling. Worth checking fuel pump relay though, does the pump buzz when the car dies and you try but it fails to restart?
-
None of these cars is going to give you trouble free motoring, too old, but from years of following owners I can say the fuel and ignition system on the 2.0 16v is horrible, hard to diagnose and not very efficient, they do drive quite well when right though. The vr6 has a more modern electronic system, which is why the fuel economy isn't far off even being nearly 3 litres. The vr6 engine and a number of other chassis differences do make the cars quite different, I'd try to drive good examples of both though as it's not just about straight line grunt in the corrado, each type is a great driver's car when properly maintained.
