There was an organised trip to visit Karmann's private museum, been a couple of times but all pre-VW buyout. It's not an official production prototype so VW don't care, same can be said for a Corrado pick-up truck that some Karmann bodyshop students produced.
-
Not entirely sure, I do know it was driven by the chairman of Karmann for a period of time, the guess work is that VW Motorsport were happy to send an engine down for installation into a Corrado as part of testing (they might have made 71 Golf Limited but its a fairly safe bet they produced around 100 engines). There are some custom bits, the leather embossed horn push on the steering wheel and a raised section on the handbrake cover area, but again nothing that Karmann were not capable of producing in house. They did use a G60 aircon radiator (675mm core largest fitted to a Corrado) but I don't know what they did in terms of an intercooler or other bits as this was 10 years ago and my digi camera battery was on the way out. It might look nice but its all very tight - changing the oil filter is a right pain!
-
Well they did but not for public sale, according to the boot sticker this car is a white G60. No idea what happened to it after VW bought Karmann though, there was rumour it had been scrapped. Yours look tidy from the few pics, nice to see a an unused spare! It's a self build engine with various off the shelf bits, some of which fit and some don't, and I guess you could say I am in the process of producing v2.2 at the moment. As for how quick they are, frankly its never run correctly since the various builds (for a range of reasons some my fault, others due to the off the shelf bits), I've only really driven it when either the inlet manifold was leaking or the cam exhaust timing was a cog out. The belt tensioner setup has also been unreliable (more off the shelf!) so hopefully when the current work is done it will be in a position to get the ECU Mapped and I can find out how fast it might finally go! I am making a list of all the changes, non-standard part numbers etc but the company I got some of the bits from that I am using no longer exists so I can't guarantee a RHD spec kit list. Also been working on this in one way or another since 2004, although house moves, time and money have frequently caused delays.

Yarp, been working on it the last week trying to get it sorted and refine some of the design, engine breathing notably and ISV connection to the inlet. Its got a new cambelt on, set of rear EBC rear calipers on order, various other odds and ends including a new master cylinder (tried a SEAT one). Hopefully have it mostly back together in the next couple of weeks and see how its running after that - stil needs an ECU map too. Got any photos of yours?

Other side of Witney, so fairly local!

Are you getting any dashboard lights, ie the oil pressure warning or coolant ones? Classic is there an immobiliser fitted question and if you have any of the stuff that lives on the X contact relay on (heater blower motor on)does it turn off when you go from 'run' to 'crank'. Agree that the most likely thing is the ignition switch but its also worth pulling all the relays and giving them a tap to help free them if they are a bit sticky.

Welcome! where about in Oxford are you?

I'd expect that to be an issue without the mocal oil cooler but as there is one of those and this is on the move as well as in traffic then something else is playing up - you can get a 675mm radiator that is the largest you can squeeze into a Corrado designed for the G60 with aircon. Rado87, standard G60 has an oil feed and return line to the engine, no coolant. Not sure about the Eaton but think its the same. Mike, just to be sure your slimline fan is running the correct way, ie it pulls air over the radiator from outside not from the engine bay. I ask as I managed to wire mine in around the wrong way.. Also its worth noting that having the fan running whilst 'in the cruise' will have an adverse effect on airflow over the radiator, its worth leaving it off until in traffic/town driving.
-
I assume you have the 'squirt' into the coolant tank from the radiator top hose/overflow line in the coolant reservoir? Is the overheating worse with the Eaton that it was with the G60 and if so by roughly how much? Also has the modification state between G60 and Eaton remained the same? ie did you have an oil cooler fitted when G-Lader was etc? So ruling out everything that you have changed and the fact that the car seems to work ok despite the high temps then the only other thing that is worth swapping out would be the oil pump, it may be that its giving out low pressure/flow (again assuming your oil low pressure warning sensors are working ok) resulting in huge heat build up. Do you have an oil pressure gauge fitted? I would advise that by running oil temps in excess of 135 deg C the engine oil will start to break down and not work correctly - this won't help with your cooling issues or the long term state of the engine.
-
Standard G60? Bit odd that even with a mocal oil cooler you are still high oil temps when airflow should be moving over the cooler. I assume you are not losing any coolant and that the heater works ok? For a bit of fault finding it would be worth removing the thermostat completely to see how the car behaves without one fitted. Was the water pump one of the newer style ones with a plastic impeller? As the oil and water temp sensor are agreeing with each other its likely its a genuine reading, the only other thing I can think is something stuck in one of the coolant pipes restricting the flow causing the high temps.

Have you got the passenger side brake ducting, the one that runs from the front lower bit of the bumper to the wheel arch liner?
-
Rear axle swap info can be found on Club GTi forum but you will need to register if you haven't already. Polo double roller bearing rear axle fit As for front brakes there isn't much reason 280mm discs won't fit under 15" wheels you just need to make sure the offset works with the disc to caliper and carrier clearance - although you will then have a hugely over braked rear axle..

Probably a fecking trader looking to make easy money. It annoys me that there are clearly quite a few folk being ripped off by dealers at the moment.
-
Rear boot leak is likely to be the small blue grommets that hold the 'Corrado' script badge and the 'VW' logo onto the rear panel. They split with age and leak water - you can get new ones fairly easily Genuine grommet or Ebay for replica items. To check remove the rear badges (carefully) to see if they are split - you will need 6 in total IIRC to replace them all. Worth checking the drain hole in the inner wing at the back under the coolant reservoir to make sure there are no leaves etc in there to help draining the excess water away too.

ABF all the way - its a much better 2l engine and has all the sensors needed to manage turbo fuelling correctly.
-
1) Its around facelift time mid 92. 2) Not 100% about dimensions but think they tweaked slightly - texture and colour change did happen though. 3) Not of the strips no. 4) Again no for that one. :)
-
They left the factor with 'Corrado' and a model type underneath that (excluding the 8vs). The additional 'Supercharged' and 'Storm' badging should be below the 'Corrado' script and VW dealerships are issued with a product bulletin detailing where the badges are to be fixed 'to ensure consistency'. So basically they are in the wrong place, the VR6 badge has definitely been moved from its factory location and the 'Storm' badge is at the very least in the wrong place. Using the fine MOT history tool this car has been parked up since Dec 2012 and in the 6 years prior to that only managed 6000 miles. Went through it's last test with only 1 advisory for pitted front brakes though so its either been well recovered to road use or stored somewhere nice and dry. Aside from the badging issue this does seem to be a fairly legit car from the pics.

Duplicate threads merged into one, hence the double comments from some folks! Nice car and enjoy it!

Agreed it sounds very much like a water pump or thermostat issue. Depending on mileage an original water pump will gradually rot away (made of aluminium) and eventually not produce any coolant flow. Newer pumps have a plastic impellor and they are press fit into a stainless shaft - these suffer from the fit degraded and the shaft spins but the impellor does not. Worse case its a new pump and I would get them to replace the thermostat too as you have to remove that to get the pump off and its only a few quid for a new one.

Stolen from NEC - Ken Lark Classic VW Cup Trailer
Yandards replied to JEZR's topic in Off-topic Chat
Agreed any car related show at the NEC is a case in point, they usually park the car show attendees up at the furthest point and have something like 'the skills show' for teenagers who mostly can't drive right next to the car park! It's always been very jobsworthy in that place and I still fail to understand the fuel tank requirement they set - fuel vapour is a lot worse than fuel and an empty tank will have 40+ litres of vapour in it - even more insane when you consider at a classic car show a lot of the cars don't have any form of carbon capture and just vent fuel vapour out to atmosphere as needed, muppets. -
Stolen from NEC - Ken Lark Classic VW Cup Trailer
Yandards replied to JEZR's topic in Off-topic Chat
Bloody cretins stealing things like that but the NEC really need to take a long hard look at what they are doing given that they know trailers are being pinched. With the amount of faff involved in getting in for setup and the fact you have to wave a car parking ticket at someone on the way out this really shouldn't be too difficult to sort out. -
Under 96k on my 1.8 16v 1990, although I bought it with under 65k. As for what will last longer - the 16v will compared to a VR - cambelts are on fixed maintenance cycles (mileage or years) and they don't suffer the 1 & 6 bore wear issues that high mileage VRs seem to develop. That being said none of the high mileage figures quoted on this thread are a surprise and you should expect around 250k miles from any Corrado engine with suitable maintenance Yes, even G60s, subject to charger servicing.

They are not on the Corrado section of EKTA, just the MK 2 Golf one, also they never made a VR6 version of the pill key. So I suspect that they were an option as part of the MK 2 Golf accessories range although I have not seen them in a brochure from that period. Classic Parts is selling them along with other key blanks for 65 Euros - bit cheaper than the robbing chap on fleabay has been, although I do remember they were £20 from the stealers not all that long ago! Agreed, got a modified one with shorter 3rd and 4th gears but the tower shifter is a better design for a smoother shift and the longer box is great when coupled with a torquey engine setup.
