Yeah but if they let go you are left with a big mess! On some engines such as BMW's S14 engine it is recommended to change the sprockets at the same time as the chain but it's not generally necessary.
-
I don't think the chain or sprockets wear that much on the vr, it is mainly the upper tensioner pad that causes problems. Most people do the chains at the same time as they aren't that expensive but IMO it's not really necessary to do the sprockets on the VR6 engine.

Did you clean the mating faces of the hubs and discs when fitting the new discs? Any small amount of dirt or corrosion on the mating faces can mean the disc isn't sitting flat on the hub and will wobble slightly as it turns causing vibration when you brake.
-
Yeah you can change the diff internals as long as the casing is ok.
-
No sh1t! Yeah that box is finished. A few people have since told me that the diffs are a weak point on VR6 boxes subjected to hard use.
-
Here's what the diff in my Vento VR6 gearbox looked like after a recent track day. I hadn't expected to get quite as good a view of it but that's how it goes I suppose......

Love it (minus the tassles) Love the wheels, love the paint. I'd like to see it on the bbs splits as well.
-
I sold a complete 2.8 drivetrain out of a mk3 to a guy last week who was planning to put it in a mk1. I didn't know if it was possible but I didn't tell him that :D
-
I don't think you can but you could probably get 5x100 discs redrilled if you wanted.
-
I'll get some pictures at the weekend. I don't have them on the car yet I still have to check which brake pipe I need to use.
-
You can use them as is if you want but because the S2 disc is 276mm and the G60 disc is 280mm the pad is sitting 2mm in too close to the hub (if you know what I mean) So to get around that I filed out the holes in the carrier by 2mm to enable me to move the carrier out 2mm.
-
If you want to upgrade from the standard G60 setup but keep 15 inch wheels, you can fit Audi S2 Calipers. They are a twin piston caliper and the pad area is much bigger than the G60 pad. They work with standard G60 discs as well.

LOL, I'd agree with you there alright.

When I was rebuilding the engine in my vento I didn't replace the tappets and they are slightly noisy for a few seconds from cold, bit annoying but I'm not stripping it back to do them now!
-
Its definitely not to accomodate larger driveshafts as the pcd is the same with 4 or 5 stud - ie 100mm
-
Oh and Barry, the alt and pas belts would have been off already when the tbelt was being changed, maybe the alt belt wasn't tightened up enough when being put back on and that's why it is noisy....
-
I've heard of them letting go, at least 2 but one of the engines wasn't exactly standard, in fact I'd say that the chain was one of the few remaining standard parts on it
-
(Slightly) off topic but where did you get the plug lead tool 2cc? Stealer?
-
It's definitely worth whipping off the inlet manifold, rocker cover and top timing chain cover to have a look at the top tensioner rail though, in the vento I just finished rebuilding the engine in the rail had failed at 121k and from what I can see the car didn't lead a particularly hard life (2 owners, fsh etc)
-
I think he means do you actually have to replace the clutch The answer is no, if you have a new clutch in there already then there's no point in replacing it, but for a car with 100k on the original clutch it would be stupid not to as you have to take off the clutch and flywheel etc to do the chains anyway.
-
right both my cars are in so if you see them be sure to rate them accordingly
-
Well the bulb I put in for Dec was a secondhand one out of a mk2 golf cluster so no doubt its best days were behind it anyway. If you get a new bulb and also clean the blue cover it should improve things dramatically.

see all the vag stuff in the top 5 :D
