  1. do you have a cable clutch due to the 16v box? if the clutch pedal has gone to the floor it has to be either the clutch, the thrust bearing, the clutch release arm, or the cable/master or slave cylinder, as knackered gears would have no effect on the clutch pedal. when my clutch collapsed i couldnt get it out of gear either as the weight of the car on a slight slope was holding it in gear, as soon as i got out and gave the car a bit of a push it released straight away.
  2. cant really get a good sense of scale for it from the pic but like i said its about 5 inches deep and the road around it has also started to sink.
  3. cheers dazzyvr6, just putting together a lengthy letter to send to them.
  4. does it seem to be using oil? is it definately white? usually: white=steam which can just be moisture produced from combustion which is normal and a lot more obvious in the winter as the car warms up or if there is serious amounts of it, a blown head gasket. bluey white=oil being burned, ususally happens more on startup, under load or on over run, could be worn rings/bores, valve stem seals, head gasket blown to an oilway, over filled oil. black=excess fuel, engine is overfueling due to poor timing, poor mixture set up, dead temp sender, faulty lambda sensor (or a jabba chip  )
  5. I'm not sure but there should be a code or part number on the shock absorber body somewhere and maybe also on the spring itself. it's allways best to replace suspension in axle pairs as it will probably screw the handling up if you only change one, plus if one spring has failed its possible that there was a bad batch and the other may also break soon, it usually takes a lot to snap a spring unless there was something wrong with it or it was misaligned when fitted. dont keep driving it with a broken spring though as it may damage the shock absorber or the threads on the coilovers. how old is the suspension ? could it still be under warranty? get some pics up as someone may be able to identify the make and model.
  6. good point, i will get some photo's tonight with a ruler in the hole to prove it, shame it wasnt on the main road as i could get them to replace the dented AZEV A at the same time  i suppose i could wind it back up on the coilies if they ask how high it is  how much is the 90mm splitter as the GPC prices are incorrect arent they? or is there a better alternative, does the vento splitter fit?
  7. For the last couple of months there has been a large pothole at the end of my lane which has been getting worse and worse and is now about 50cm across (about 20 inches in old money) and 13cm (about 5 inches) deep and has got to the point where its almost impossible to avoid (its very narrow where the pothole is), normally you just get a little bit of a scrape when driving over it but yesterday i had to reverse back over it to let an ambulance past and heard a nice crunch and then a bang as the right hand corner of the splitter got ripped open, my dad and the next door neighbor both reported the pothole a couple of months ago but absolutely nothing has been done about it. Is it worth claiming off the local council or highways department for a new splitter or am i likely to be told to sod off as the car is too low?
  8. yeah unplugging the fan would do the job for now, its most likely down to the rad fan switch sticking on, not sure if its the same on a 16v but on a g60 if you look down at the radiator on the right hand side (as you look at it) about 3/4 the way down is a large brass nut with a connector with 3 wires coming out of it, to prove its the rad fan switch, unplug the 3pin connector from the rad fan switch and if the fan stops replace the switch. either £8.39 from ECP or £6.39 from AVS or £7.95 from gsf.
  9. you can get a suitable replacement for g12+ from halfords or partco its called OAT (organic acid technology) coolant and looks identical to the pink g12+ from vw.
  10. Spencer Tramm's Quantum Leap isnt a funny car, its in the door slammer class as far as i know, funny cars are carbon fibre or fibreglass over a spaceframe chassis, most of the bodywork is his is still original steel, including some of the floor, roof, doors, boot, wings and bonnet. i have seen it run at stratford and its a real beast
  11. absolutely bonkers wheels :silly: , but for some reason they seem to work against the car  , would look even better with slammed suspension and low profile tyres 8)
  12. i have found it also stops car park tickets dissapearing down the back of your dash when you brake hard
  13. that long rubber strip actually sits just in front of the dash and it rests against the windscreen as a sort of dust seal, mine has one on it anyway.
  14. tarche2, i noticed the small dings on your RM's when i came to pick the cabby up from you with my freinds Ben and Toe, the outers on my RM's where in much worse shape with a couple of nasty flat spots and after they where balanced there was no steering shake whatsoever, it might be worth getting the hubs checked as spacers and wider wheels will amplify the effect of bent hubs.
  15. if you havnt got sky you can see most of the cars here overhaulin' starring chip foose and boyd coddington in american hotrod wing nuts and american chopper are also worth watching if you have an appreciation for custom design i have to say i prefer the foose stuff he has a real knack for making subtle changes that completely transform a vehicle and i can see why he left boyd coddington.
  16. also boiled and cooled tap water is not really suitable for a battery, it should be de-ionised filtered water which you can buy from halfords in a big bottle for next to nothing. i had also heard some people use rain water to top batteries up, not sure why though?
  17. or just make one which transmits gps signals like we use to test equipment in our office, you can make the tracker think its somewhere its not 8)
  18. if tis just the front subframe you can pick a decent one up from a scrappy for 20 quid and both front and rear top mounts you should be able to get for about 60 quid all in.
  19. it is actually quite straight forward on a corrado the problem is most fitters dont do it correctly, they just bond the screen in and then put the outer seal in and wait for it to set, the problem with that is that the combination of gravity and the outer seal push the screen down and leave a gap around the top of the screen, what they should do is bond the screen in then fit the lower plastic trim before it sets as the screen has plastic wind deflectors on either side which actually rest on the lower plastic trim holding it in the correct location and then fit the outer seal. you can usually go to the windscreen place and ask them if they deal with your insurance company and then just hand over £50 excess, also ask for a OEM VW screen as most fitters will order one in for you.
  20. GPRS is not a satallite location system it has nothing to do with possitioning its just a mobile GSM data transfer system. the GPS satallite system would not be effected by the number of vehicles with trackers as it only sends out information, otherwise all the tom tom's and other GPS reliant devices would also cause a problem. nearly all the tracking devices available receive the possition information from the GPS satallites and then send that information via a mobile network or store it for bulk transmission later, unlike the D+ Inmarsat satallite network which our system uses which receives the possition data from the GPS satallite's and transmits direct via the Inmarsat satallites so is not dependant on land based networks like GPRS or GSM. No its not impossible but it would be incredibly expensive to run for every vehicle in the uk and the administration costs would also be huge and i wouldnt believe everything you hear from the BBC, i should know as they use some of our equipment. it is also possible for the US to put errors into the GPS system to prevent it from being used as a targeting system, this happened a couple of times when i was at the the previous company which really plays havoc with the system.
  21. how does this work then? cant get photomaps up? click on the hybrid button and it should show up, mine is visible next to my dads volvo the picture is about 18 months old though as the new house behind ours was just a foundation.
  22. I work for a company that manufacture satalite tracking systems mainly used for global sea shipping and container freight, as well as armed and security service tracking and panic alert systems, i really cant see this ever happening its just yet another government pie in the sky idea that will never happen, especially as the public would not allow it, i know i would'nt. there are far too many ways to fiddle the system for a start, including a matchbox sized device which can feed false signals to the GPS receiver and trick the system into thinking it has gone somewhere it hasnt. tracking devices in the uk cannot legally be used for speed prosecutions as it has been proven that systems can show incorrect speeds, i have seen the trace report of a contractors transit van doing 147mph down a dead end street in the middle of liverpool  now i know white van men have a bit of a lead foot (i am one of them) but even i could see that was a bit fishy. what could happen though is if the police did monitor it they could find out where you where speeding and send someone there in person to catch you. but like i said it wont happen, they will no doubt find some other way of screwing the average motorist though.
  23. i work for a company that manufacture tracking devices and i used to fit them up and down the country, there are a few ways of disabling them, but one of the best i have seen is to simply put a pin through the coax cable for the antenna so it short circuits the outer screen to the centre core, which is almost impossible to find when they are called out to repair it. you also need to be carefull with some systems as even if the power is disconnected they have a battery backup and will run for weeks without external power also if the server that monitors its transmissions is set to expect a transmission at a set time and it doesnt receive it it may flag up an alert that it has either been tampered with or there is a fault. any decent fitter would not connect its power supply to the ABS system or any other safety related circuitry so they should really ask to have it re-wired. if you can actually get the unit out, a quick blast in a microwave will make sure its dead without showing any external damage  also a baked bean can over the antenna should do the trick, but magnets will have no effect.
  24. depends what time you get there, from runcorn to speke with quiet traffic is about 20 mins but at rush hour it can be anything from 30 mins to an hour as the traffic backs up a bit for the runcorn bridge and if the roadworks are still on the bridge at j12 for runcorn on the m56 it will probably add 20 mins during rush hour, i reckon it would take about an hour and a half to get from holt to speke in steady rush hour traffic.
  25. 2 hours in the morning 2 1/2 on the way home, used to work in runcorn which only took 30 mins until the company was bought out and moved to the new head office in tewkesbury, not having much luck finding affordable property anywhere near tewkesbury though might have to start looking for local work which is not going to be fun either.
