help me heat my van...im sleeping in the pyranees in it!!
coolrado replied to chaz g60's topic in General Car Chat
the inverter(voltage converter) needed to run a bar heater would have to be huge, even a small heater would be about 500 watt, most cheap inverters will only cope with 300 watt peak and that's only when it has a perfect supply from the vehicle, the power drops a surprising amount by the time it has reached the cigar lighter socket. you might be better searching for a ceramic car fan heater, or maybe 2, from somewhere like motorworld or motormania, fan heaters usually rely on having a smaller heater element but circulating the heat more, they dont allways use more power. also you battery will last about half an hour running either a 12v heater or inverter. wear lots of layers and dont fall asleep with your face touching the glass  -
i allways find if i park away from any other cars in tesco, that i come back out to find some ratty old heap of a granada with some fat slob :porc: trying to squeese her fat ar*e through the 2 inch gap she has left, and usually resting her door on my car to do it. whenever i have to squeese into a slightly tight spot i allways put my hand over the edge of my door so i dont mark the car next to me. i was seriously thinking about getting a set of those soft magnetic strips that are featured in pvw this month but i know some little scrote will either steal them or rip them off and use them to inflict more damage on the car. i know my car is not a show car and i dont have the sort of time and money you guys have invested in your creations, but i can understand the anxiety you must feel when you see some plank nearly reverse into the side of your car, or not think twice about letting the brats in the back of thier people carrier/soft roader swing the doors straight into the side of your car

if you have the 700 with the built in hard drive make sure you dont drop it as the hard drive is very sensitive to shocks, a mate of mine who works on the audio counter in chester halfords has had quite a few returned for repair due to being dropped even on to carpet. it costs almost as much as a new unit to have them repaired though. they have been selling like hot cakes though almost every other car i pass on the motorway seems to have a tom tom sitting on the dash.
-
all the tom tom go's also have traffic update and re-route, they connect to your mobile via bluetooth and automatically update themselves, the data calls are very cheap as only a small amount of data is transfered, it has saved me from getting stuck in quite a few jams. you can also download extras via your mobile.

tom tom 300 also has the poi database and warning system, and the camera locations updates are free from pocketgpsworld.com had mine for a while now and have no complaints. and some of the celebrity voices are quite funny especially the john cleese one.

if youre sure you know who it was, just tell their parents you saw them do it. -
they are quite simple to repair using the flat pins from a scart plug, i have two spare sets that i have repaired in case mine stop working again. i also sealed them up after with some polyurethane adhesive so they wont corrode again. they do actually heat up quite a lot, i connected a set up on the power supply at work and after a few minutes they were hot to the touch.

if your considering dropping it low on the koni/hr's the general feeling seems there is no need for the vag rear bushes, so poly's all round would be better as the passive rear steer is lost when lowering anyway.

a 55mm front spoiler with some subtle ducts would be nice 8)

one way to cheat a bit is to vote then delete your cookies and then vote again  8) back to sub zero -
i think he means R2D2 helps make them  nah, but he does carry the beer :drinking: http://www.hasbro.com/r2droidfactory/ if you have never seen one of these they are a bit like the bigtrack toys from years ago but with voice recognition, it even plays the "help me obi wan kenobi, your my only hope" message, dances to the cantina music, memorises a course to follow as well as loads of other stuff. :dorky: we are just big kids really

picked the car up this afternoon and the paintjob is superb, the colour seems much richer and its had 4 coats of laquer, so it should stay looking good for a long time. he has taken step by step photo's while he has been doing it so i will try and get a copy of them. all i need now is some sound deadening so i think i will go for the dynamat extreme, and the gromit for the bottom of the bonnet stay (although the stealers seem to be struggling to find it on etka). does anyone do twin hydraulic lifters for an early bonnet?
-
we are still working on the front mount as the way it mounts onto the front chassis rail is quite difficult and time consuming to manufacture but we will post some pics up of that soon. at the moment the rear right mount is mounted in the casing of a standard engine mount which we pressed the centre out of but we will be looking into ways of manufacturing them from scratch soon when i get my car back from the bodyshop this week i will be putting the mounts through their paces. there are a few different grades of the poly bushes to choose from but we have gone for the ones that are slightly harder than the original rubber. my front engine mount bracket had started to rip apart with a standard mount so it is probably worth getting them reinforced before fitting any other mounts.

they do sell decent one's in halfrauds, the du pont tyvek cover in medium is meant to fit the corrado and i think they are on discount at most stores at the moment.
-
it allready has been, the guy who is painting it spent ages doing the underside of the bonnet just in case the foam was no longer availiable, its just to quieten things down a bit, and i dont like the sound of bonnets or doors closing without sound deadening as they sound like something from a citroen  haywire (king of dynamat) should know what i mean
-
bugger ah well there go's any hope of keeping it looking original
-
cheers henny i will give them a try. i think i saw this guy at bodelwydden earlier this year and my mate bought a load of carpet for his splitty off him.
-
yeah totally different and not even enough foam to cut down to fit either. might just go for the dynamat then. i suppose i can allways put a layer of foam over it afterwards if i find something suitable.
-
yep cant really fault the way they have dealt with this since it happened, it just looks like the chimp who did it in the first place let them down. and i have been there many times since and there has been no sign of him at all  they ordered another set of bonnet foam after being told by the vw dealers (dane vw chester) that the early foam was still availiable, and they delivered another set of late foam  so what are my options with the sound insulation? i dont really like the shiney finnish on dynamat extreme or dynamat hoodliner, its a bit too bling for me  is the square hole pattern foam availiable anywhere else? if i have to use dynamat how much will i need without having any joins in it?

if you really want to learn how to do this sort of thing its just a case of getting the right tools, getting your hands dirty and giving it a go. as long as you take your time and double check things there is not a lot that can go wrong, and its a lot more satisfying than just handing over a wedge of cash IMO. me and my mates have been messing about with cars and bikes since we where in school and even swapped an engine and brakes from a y10 turbo into a y10 touring in an evening which was back on the road the next day.

i bought my tax disk a few month ago and now all the writing has completely faded and is unreadable, i think the girl in the post office must have used [fade]disapearing ink [/fade] does that mean if i get stopped they could say im not displaying a valid tax disk?
