any ideas what/where the wire was mate? EDIT:- It's entirely possible that the component the wire connnects to could be faulty on mine - so info on what it connects to would be very much appreciated mate. Also did you find that advancing your timing made your motor run better before the problem was cured?

I'll look forward to it mate!

lol good idea but Cardiff makes you pay first - that's trust for you! I'm assuming we're only talking a few quid for the crank pulley. -

Thanks for your suggestions guys. When timed "correctly" the revs climb steadily to 3k then with constant throttle on 3k, they drop back down the 2k and all torque disappears (chug chug - timing adjusting itself methinks). with the dizzy cap rotated all the way round (a/c from n/s), it runs fine (tickover @ 980ish and picks up nicely) Obviously i'm worried that if something is out by that much, we could have some valve/piston interaction if it changes again. Is replacing the crank pulley a biggy Gav? -

Just a quick update on the bu66ered C front. Yan(dards), Chris (2cc) and myself spent today with the car, thanks so much for coming to my rescue guys :notworthy: Yan, several beers will be waiting at e38 and Chris you have plenty more questions for the chap in osnabruck!! but also beers owed. (also thanks Daz from G-Werks for the timing advice) We have cured the horrific over fuelling with a working (but not the right part - will be changing this week) lambda probe, but all is still not well. The car will only run nicely (no glowing manifold, 35mpg on the motorway :)) with the ignition as far advanced as the dizzy will physically go  even VAG are stumped. Now reading a couple of posts here (and VAG suggested), there is a possibility that the issue is with fuel pressure. Can anyone shed some light? I will be fitting a new lambda and fuel filter this week but don;t know which other parts are capable of retarding the ignition at such a rate. I will link to this post from the "car is hesitant" post as the guys there are displaying the same symptoms and I think Mistrall is also having similar probs. Any input gladly accepted -
Quick update - it's not the cat, when I got it off I found it to be empty! All silenders behind are free from blockage too. Yan came round and helped me sort the timing :notworthy: so it aint that either - so it is looking like the lamda is at least part of the problem, will be replacing that tomorrow and will let y'all know

That's very kind of you mate, I;m in Westbury. I don't exactly know how to sort the timing, is it easy to do? -
Hey all, Car has been running sh!t recently, took a turn for the worse on Friday when the manifold was glowing! Timing is obviously out by a country mile, the centre box was too hot to touch after running the car for about 2minutes!! So I'm stuck here until I get it sorted. My question is, what can make the timing go out so badly? I'll get the timing done tomorrow but is there anything else that could be causing it to be out? e.g. knock sensors, lambda buggering up mixture etc.etc.etc
-
That's bad news mate, but things always happen for a reason. With design exp. the world is your oyster. Set up your own web design agency and take all their business, that'll learn 'em . ( there is a serious lack of good web designers who charge a reasonable rate)

wheels = sweeet

Dude, have you tested the exhaust system for blockages and the lamda? I'm starting to think that's the problem with mine (thanks for eliminating the throttle switch lol)
-
check your cat (if you have one) /lamba probe Another similar thread - you can check what others have done and here
-
Aha, might be in the right ball park here then (for once )

Thanks Gav, I'm gonna do an oil change this weekend (incl filter) and I'll clean the pick up out at the same time. Was going to use 15w 40 but having read a few threads on here I;m not sure whether i need something thinner to get up there and fill the tappets up quicker though. Glanced through the history and can't see a pattern of par

Hey guys, just found this thread clickety click My cat is definately buggered so, tonight i will be mostly kicking the crap out of it (literally) and testing the lambda - (and taking back those horrendously overpriced leads to GSF!!)
-
Cool, thanks Gavin, just to confirm it does connect to a block style connector down near the bulkhead on the o/s?
-
guys, just a little update, It's not the leads  Also, found the connector for the lamda sensor/probe down the back of the engine. Unplugged it and it made no difference to the sh!te running of the car. Is this an indicator that the lamba's gone? Where exactly on the valver does it attach, in the cat?
-
Nah, the noise in mine is definately coming from in the block, corradowales was round last night and reckoned it could be tappets, looking through the forum I think this could be the case - gonna try that wynn's hydraulic lifter thing and see if there's any improvement
-
Hi All, My valver has developed a pretty constant knocking kind of knocka-knocka-knocka etc at tickover, it's more noticable inside the car than with the bonnet open. Could this be something as simple as the timing being out or could I be looking at something a bit more serious? EDIT - it's definately coming from the engine BTW, just more noticable inside away from usual engine noise.
-
redcorrado, mine got better yesterday as in running absolutely fine, and then again today that crappy hesitancy. Did yours start intermittantly?
-
Yeah that's how mine was put on 8)
