Finally checked through my invoices last night and found the one with the brake pedal travel sensor, however unfortunately the garage I used hand-write their invoices so there is no part number on it. All I can tell you is that it cost £51.61 + vat and labour costs were £60 - but the guy also checked out a few other things on the same visit, so not all of the labour was for fitting this sensor. I think the guy used to charge £40 per hour, so it's probably no more than 1 hours work.

OK, sorry I took so long in posting this up, but finally remembered last night and fished out the invoice from VW. The part number I have for the sensor is 191919149D and it cost me £16.86 + vat. This was probably about a year or so ago now, so prices might have changed.
-
Just had a thought about whether it would be the same part number as for mine, with mine being a 2.0 16v and yours a G60. However, I'll still take a look for the part number and post it up anyway.

If I get a chance I'll sift through my old receipts at the weekend (for the part number), as I had the exact same problem and replaced the speed sensor (the one on the gearbox) and it's been perfect since. Also as Toad says it's very simple to replace, and I'm sure it was only about £20 - £25.

Welcome...another one in the Portsmouth area! So...are you going to come along to the South Coast Meet at the end of the month?
-
Worth knowing about. They're only a few miles from me - and didn't even know they existed!

How many forum members plan on NEVER selling their Corrado?
kerrinmay replied to godskitchen's topic in General Car Chat
I had thought about keeping mine forever, actually quite fancied getting a collection of interesting VW's such as a Golf Rallye, Golf MK1 GTI etc, but really would need somewhere to keep them all. I did have two cars once - my VW Beetle and BMW 318i (E30). I kept the Beetle thinking that I wouldn't sell it, but in reality I hardly ever used it, plus I had to keep it on the road, and in the end I needed the money for a deposit to purchase my first house. I did have plans to keep my C as is loads I want to do to it, but then got a bit dishartened with people putting dents in it whilst it's parked on the street. Anyway, I'm getting more enthusiastic about it again now - what with my new injectors etc and it now running better, and the forthcoming South Coast Meet! -
Mine normally averages just over 30 mpg, but I've got as high as 40 mpg before on a good long drive across country. Mind you that was with my Mum following me when my parents moved house last November so I had to stick to less than 60 on the A-roads so as not to lose her! I normally get about 400 miles out of a tank, but think I've had as much as 450 miles before!

That definately sounds similar to the problem that I had. On startup the light would come on and go off as expected, but then upon driving, it would then come on (although not always).
-
I'm sure it was one of those that I had replaced about 1 1/2 years ago and I'd say it was more around the £50 mark. Mine was also causing problems with my ABS light coming on. It was either a brake pedal position sensor or brake pedal travel sensor which might be one and the same thing! I can definately check tonight through my old invoices, and I'll also see what effort/labour costs were involved in replacing it.

Maybe this is something I should look at. The engine is really quiet for a 16v, sometimes on tickover you can hardly notice it's running, so the noise must be all from the road etc. It really is noisy compared to my last car (E36 coupe), can actually be difficult having a conversation when driving at motorway speeds. Can't say I like the look of that sticky foil looking stuff - and don't like the idea of having it stuck everywhere - even if it is all out or view, so would probably favour felt or the 'brown bread' stuff.
-
Was really hoping to get them in some soapy water and get all the dust out. They really aren't that bad, just when the sun shines from behind the car that it lights up all the dust!
-
Thanks. Think that maybe I'll just get some cotton buds in there for cleaning - and leave them in place!
-
Has anyone tried getting their vents out? I'm scared of breaking them. Just want to take them out so I can give them a good clean.
-
Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge to suggest what might be possible causes/solutions. Hopefully someone else will pick up this thread and provide you with some assistance. I used to get back-fires with my 1970 VW Beetle - can't quite remember how we cured them, although I did get through two engines plus an engine rebuild in the few years that I owned it!! I've not had back-fires on any cars I've owned since. I'm trying to get a bit more involved with the mechanics again now - but unfortunately still don't know a whole heap. Sorry!
-
Are you getting back-fires as well as miss-fires then?
-
Not sure about the over-fuelling, but I'm sure it would cause miss-fires.

When I was writing that I just knew there would be some of those kind of remarks made

Does anyone know if VW still glue the rotor arms on? The reason I ask is that when I bought my C almost a couple of years ago, I couldn't get the arm off to replace it (it was glued on), so I asked the dealer to do it, and now I need to replace it again, I'm just hoping that they didn't glue the new one on. I had a quick tug last night and it didn't come off, are they normally quite a tight fit? If I 'mash' if off with a pair of pliers like was mentioned in another thread, could I cause any damage to the spindle it sits on?
-
Yep, I got them from the dealer. What actually causes them to wear? Just a lot of use? Or is there anything that can speed up the wear?
-
I replaced my HT leads at the weekend, and noticed that the inside of my distributor cap looked a bit oily, and also the contacts looked quite worn. I replaced the cap just under two years ago, is it normal for it to wear in this time? Think I'd better get myself a new cap and rotor arm ordered today. Also, should I be concerned about the oiliness in the cap? I read in another topic that this could be the oil seal where the distributor is mounted. I'm a bit scared to attempt to replace that myself, so will probably get the garage to do it when it's in for a service next (due in the next few weeks).

Well...made a bit of a pigs ear of that!! Had great difficulty with the number 4 lead and that sensor. Although the end came of the lead easily, it really is a very tight fit trying to thread that sensor back on. Was a hard enough job pulling it off the old lead, but trying to get it on the new one was far worse! The problem is that there is no give in the whole in the sensor, and it's a tight fit on the lead but in addition to that I had the crimped metal connector on the end that I had to try and feed through. There was no way it was going to fit, no matter how much I tryed to round off the corners (where it was crimped around the lead) with plyers. In the end I bu**ered it up and had to resort to putting the old lead back on, and that was still a mission trying to get the sensor back on that one! What I now need to do is see if I can get a new metal connector that I can crimp onto my new lead, then I'll chop off the now mangled one, thread the sensor on, and then crimp on the new connector. Even running on the three new leads that I did manage to fit, the car does feel more responsive though. Although I did notice that my distributor cap looks quite crappy (replaced it almost two years ago now) so I'll get that replaced too.

The speed sensor is very very simple to replace, shouldn't take more than a couple of mins.
-
I had a similar problem with mine, with the revs dropping and it cutting out if I took my foot off the accelerator, and the problem was actually the speedo speed sensor. I had also been experiencing problems with the speedo working erratically, and these two problems were linked. Upon changing this sensor both problems went away. So might be worth having a look at this if you don't get any luck with the other suggestions. From what I remember the new sensor was just over £20 from the dealer.
