Got one set out for now, the smaller valve looks a bit messy to me Is that valve ok? seems a bit worn where the black ring is, i've tried cleaning it up with a wire brush and some light sanded, but didn't want to do too much to it. Will an ultrasonic cleaner clean the crap off the bottom of the valves? Is really solid stuff.

Not a fan of my samcos either, keep meaning to buy some new hoses, am always smelling coolant and think its through the hoses.

My old boss was called Peter Burrell, just shat a brick!

That's kinda my point. Its rebuilding a 12v engine vs buying a used 24v.
-
Thing is in my mind you can rebuild a 12v and have a new engine you know the history of. Or take the chance buying a used 24v. How much does it cost to rebuild a 24v as that should be the comparison. Its two different things. Rebuilding an engine vs swapping an engine. You can buy a used 12v that fits straight in. Is that cheapest of all?

Got the valve tool today. Alot bigger than I had thought but never seen one before. Going to try it out in a while

You can buy a little rod with a thread on the end that screws into the hub, i just got one off ebay. Wheel aligner tool or something. Struggled for 7yrs without one and love it now. My brake discs spin on the hub (little screw sheared off) so it always been a pain lining wheels up with the holes.

Should've been called a Corrado TreeR6.

Am sure its not meant to be as noisy as it is, got a new noise now as well when i start it, more knocky, like knocking two bits of hardwood together, but it goes away. Am sure my old engine sounded ok from 130,000miles to 194,000miles
-
But then i have to find a decent 24v that i trust, or rebuild one, Plus all the extra wiring and stuff, think i'd rather stick with the 12v for now, has been decent enough for the last 7yrs

Is there a way to check for wear on the other parts of engine that aren't the head? My engine i've removed had 201,000miles on it, am rebuilding the head, but wondering if its worth doing anything with the pistons or the crank bit or if there are ways to check these things? I don't really know what i'm looking for. If it is worn or in need of work, what are the likely things i'd need to get done? ---------- Post added at 3:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 3:07 PM ---------- Seen this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151061973308?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Its a 2.8 AAA Block and pistons "This is for 1 x Bare Brand new Volkswagen Block / 6 x Brand New Pistons Rings and pins ./ Circlips . There is no Crankshaft or Rods" Its £580. What i'm wondering is, can i fit my corrado parts to this, like the head and inlet, even the crank, so basically making it a 2.8 corrado engine. Is the price good? I have no idea what it might cost to rebuild my 2.9 version. Don't mind doing the head, but thought i heard pistons etc were expensive.

I use a chisel and scrape it off. Once you have the technique. It comes off in big long strips. Then wire brush on a drill gets rid of any little leftovers.

Should just push in. Should have a ridge one end and I pushed that end in until it hit the face of boot then fitted the other end. Found that the most central position. As long as the boots are clamped on tight it should stay there. I did mine with rack off the car so a bit easier.

How do you tell if its overfuelling?

Have you managed to check the water temp the ecu is getting? My dash gauge reads low. Changed everything. Engine included. And still reads low. Bought a cheap vagcom and need to try again as I can't work it.

I used the glue it said to use on the instructions and took a while to find a place that sold it as well. Think it was 3M #80 Spray adhesive. I just used white spirits to remove the old glue, once you have pulled the foam off you have a layer of glue, i just spent a while softening it with white spirts then scraping it off with a credit card or plastic ice scraper. Takes quite a bit of time, but cleans up like new.

Just something people may want to check out. I fitted that bonnet foam from the group buy, its been on since about December 2012 and has been fine. But with the hot weather we had yesterday, i happened to notice when lifting the bonnet that all the glue holding it on had softened and three of the bits had mostly come off and just hanging down onto the engine  Which was nice!

I have a posh mountain bike, another thing i've bought and never used, did about 20miles on it, not used it for over 2yrs now. Another thing i should really sell. Its a GT Idrive.

What is attached the middle cog when doing timing chains, not the cam ones or the one on the crank, the one where both chains attach to. Is that something to do with oil? Am wonder if something there could be making a noise. Am sure my old engine developed a similar noise just before i removed it.

Thanks for that, very helpful post. (nearly forgot i had made this thread) Its all starting to make more sense now i've started taking bits aparts and seen what's what. Even though i'm starting to lose interest in the car i think i may as well rebuild the old head

My horns are mounted on the inner wing, sort of behind the side edge of the bumper

Don't think i could seriously buy a renault twizy, maybe a bit extreme of me. Started to look into storing the corrado, but costs are from £10-£20 a week, so that'll be a waste of money as don't see it appreciating that much. Could see me digging out in 5yrs time and parts being even more expensive and the roads being even ****ter. Going to look around for another car anyway, just to see what appeals to me.
-
I am starting to wonder if something has loosened off around that area, as i had to repair the thread on that very area :( Am really losing patience with the car now, not sure if i want to carry on doing all this work, starting to consider getting rid of the corrado and replacing it with a renault twizy  ---------- Post added at 9:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 9:42 AM ---------- Also did the engine flush and installed the castrol magnatec but still sounds the same. Went all over the head with a metal bar held to my ear and it all sounded quite smooth in there, just a gentle whir from things spinning around.

Had a good listen to it today. Was doing the engine flush and had to let it run for 15mins at about 1500rpm. I wedged the throttle arm on the throttle body. Noticed the revs kinda pulsed a bit. Like up and down 100rpm. I notice this pulsing feeling while sat in traffic or idling. Might that be the icv? Anyway the noise seems to be loudest at the rear of engine down behind the intake elbow/manifold area.
