  1. wash it from the inside out, don't run it under a tap the same way as the air flows as that forcing dirt into the filter, I used to dry mine in the airing cupboard over night. then just use a small amount of oil sprayed on the outside of filter. the K&N recharge kit is worth getting
  2. no  but i've learnt that the metal part of a light bulb stays hotter for longer than the glass bit :mad2:
  3. nice one chaps, thanks. i think i'm going to get one of those copper pipe tools, i will be getting a decent one as i also need to do the lines on the land rover at some point, so me and a friend can split the cost of that. What size pipe do i need, and the screw nut thingys? What type of grease do i need? so many questions....
  4. also do i need to put some kind of grease in the bearings and do i need someone to press them into the discs? i should have a read of the bentley manual later really
  5. i looked around for alternatives to buying from VW, phoned biggred and they had one new one and one refurbed one, and wanted £156 for them, without sending anything back ebay only turned up some that looked non-genuine to me. i asked about the carriers and they were £60 each iirc, thats with the pins and boots. I didn't want to spend any more money so didn't get them still can't undo the brake line on the front where it joins to car, think i've buggered the nut up now :(
  6. best since the mk1 and mk2 golfs i think, although releasing that just makes the scirocco look like a golf thats been trod on and squashed a bit
  7. whats the mk4 clip for the handbrake cable? will i need them? ffs :( am not doing the ABS ring.... also whats the mk3 carriers and bolts for? don't tell me i need them aswell :(
  8. As with the front brake thread, i'm still in the middle of doing this, hoping to fit everything next week. Just wanted to compile all the info i've found out with your help. Should help others and they won't have to make 100 threads like i do  I was refurbing some corrado rear calipers i bought, but halfway through discovered how naff they are and prone to seizing, i've had lots of annoyance with my handbrake and been informed the mk4 calipers are much better. WHAT YOU NEED: Mk4 Golf Calipers = VW Part numbers: 1J0 615 423 & 1J0 615 424 = £76.50 + vat each They fit the standard corrado carriers, so no need to change them, but you may want to get some slider pins (depending on condition of yours) these aren't availiable seperately, you have to buy the whole carrier. I got a 2nd hand set in good condition, so i can reuse the best out of the 8 i will have once i've taken old brakes off car. (note the two different types, one type has a flat area running down The golf calipers also use the standard corrado discs and pads, so just buy them to suit your car. DISCS -To suit Standard corrado, non vented discs. PADS - To suit Standard corrado pads REAR WHEEL BEARINGS: Not sure these have to be done, but they are pressed into the discs so easier to replace then messing around getting old ones out. VW Part number: 191 598 625 = £16.32 + vat each (you need 2no) REAR BRAKE HOSES: The golf calipers don't use the same fittings as the corrado, so you need a Goodridge hose set, called a mk2-mk4 conversion kit, meant for a mk2 golf, and are a banjo fitting instead of the screw in hoses. Goodridge Part number: SVW0506-2P HANDBRAKE CABLE: Optional really, but i'm getting new as i'm doing most other stuff. VW part number: 1H0 609 712E = £11.32 + vat each (you need 2no) If i've missed anything or got anything wrong feel free to tell me, as i'm no expert
  9. cut the face off and make them into wall clocks, i was going to do this with an old speedline but never did
  10. i thought maybe laquer it like people do with rims, but i guess with the heat that won't last very long
  11. Just some general information i have gathered from replacing all my brakes......Will update this thread as i go along, at this moment i'm just gathering all the bits and pieces i think i need. A popular modification to the corrado is upgrading the front brakes from 280mm to 288mm. You will need: 288mm CALIPERS & CARRIERS - These can be from a late golf VR6 95onwards or a Passat VR6. (i'm using golf ones) DISCS - To suit calipers you have chosen.. (i got plain brembo vented discs, again from a 95onwards golf VR6) PADS - To suit calipers you have chosen. HOSES - I am using a set for a mk3 golf VR6 95onwards which have a banjo fitting, the passat calipers use a screw fitting i'm told (same as the corrado calipers) REBUILDING THE CALIPERS When mine arrived they were 2nd hand a bit grubby, they are simple to dismantle into pieces, the pistons just pop out if you connect a foot pump to the calipers and pump them out. You should have all these pieces shown in photo, the old bits of hoses aren't important but useful to connect the foot pump to when getting pistons out. After a wire brush and a bit of elbow grease. here is the lipped egde on the piston bore that the rubber seals fix to, they just pull out. After a bit of dremel action they come up much cleaner, ready for painting, i don't agree with painting over rust or lumpy areas, get them spotless. Caliper painted, just brushed on some hammerite smooth. I ordered my new seals and bits from VW. Caliper Rebuild Kit (For Golf VR6 1997/98) -VW Part no: 3A0698471 - Set of seals = £12.51 inc vat, per side. This includes the Piston Seals & Piston Dust Covers Guide bushes (For Golf VR6 1997/98) -VW Part no: 4D0 698 647 - you need 2 for each side, so order twice. Calipers all reassembled, i left one surface unpainted and just smeared a coating of copper slip over that
  12. well got the ones from VW in the end, they feel much lighter, going to paint them black too
  13. right, from VW the part numbers given above are £89.99 each phoned biggred who have a pair, one brand new, one refurbed and thats £156 for the pair am tempted just to get from VW now, are those numbers definatley correct, as i've already bought discs and pads but they are for standard corrado rears? i got non-vented discs
  14. how important is it? when i went to fit my brakes i forgot about the fluid, so had to buy some stuff from local garage, it was £5.99 a litre and made by carplan, its dot 4 and says synthectic on the bottle.. i didn't do my brakes in the end, so not used it, is it worth getting something else or will that be fine?
  15. are the ones on ebay link above ok? they seem a good price for a pair, or are they not proper VW ones? the part number equivilant is the same except for an "H" in place of the "J"
  16. still looking around for some new calipers, which is the ones i need from this list, i notice lots of types, some with a 38 bore piston and some 39? http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk/brake_ ... detail.cfm
  17. i think so, it seemed a bit weird so i'd rather just renew those bits now i think. can i get access to where the pipe goes if i take airbox out?
  18. we borrowed a 10mm spanner from the local garage, it was also a complete ring but with a slot in it? is that what you mean? the nut seemed funny shaped, like a 10mm spanner went on one way, but trying to slot it on nut from another angle it wouldn't fit, as if the nut was oblong/squashed shape
  19. went to fit the new calipers today with hoses, but couldn't get the old hose undone, where it joins to the solid line on the car. am thinking that it will have to be renewed each side, does anyone know the size of copper pipe i need, i'll get a flaring tool and the end connectors, but where does the piping all go? is it hard to get to? i guess there will be a load to do at the rear as well?
  20. Am thinking of lowering the back 60mm but not sure if that will be enough or not? i seem to remember some 60mm springs looking very similar to 40mm also if i get what they call a 60/40mm kit is that 60mm rears and 40mm fronts?
  21. the engine on my vr6 is one of the only things that hasn't gone wrong in 170,000miles, all thats been done is its been serviced
  22. my car had it on when i bought it, i've hardly used it in two years, think it needs a regas but i've never got round to sorting it out
  23. i noticed that with the aircon on there is a fan, sounds like the rad fan to me, anyway with aircon on its continually on and off every couple of minutes
  24. the number on box for hoses is SVW0604-6P and they are for a golf VR6 95on i plan to write a guide, there is a thread somewhere with the pics of calipers in pieces etc and part numbers for the seals
