And yours is going to stay as an auto for quite a bit longer as you still haven't contacted me to pay for the conversion parts you said you wanted to buy from me, and you've run out of chances to contact me now... :bad-words:

get yourself a nice Passat (b5) 2000ish reg... you can pick 'em up for peanuts at the moment, they're good for 200Kmiles, cheap to run, cheap to service and a 130tdi is enough fun when you need it, but has the economy you'll be after... They're also pretty easy to tart up and make look a little special too with simple things like new headlamps, a jap style front bumper, lowering and a bit of colour coding making the car look 1000% better yet not breaking the bank... ;) I vary between loving and loathing my passat purely because it's only a 115bhp so it's very very slow (compared to the 252bhp G60 Corrado I'm used to!) but then I see the fuel economy and think about just how much stuff I can fit in it (it's an estate!) and I see the light again!

I found it pretty easy... take your time with the connections for the heated washers and the water pipe when you're taking it apart as they tend to go brittle... Make sure that you've got at least 2 people to help... 2 of you will be needed to hold the bonnet in place while the third will just be needed to put the bolts in.... you can do it with just two of you, but it's not as easy.... Just take your time, and don't just drop the bonnet expecting it to have lined up perfectly first time! There's quite a bit of adjustment you can get out of the hinge mounts onto the bonnet... Oh, and remove the grill before you even consider doing this, so if you don't quite get the lineup correct and find that it's closed but the catch is too far forwards to be released by the cable, then you can get your hand in and release it manually... ;)

3 for me too.... 1) 1990 (H plate) 1.8 16V in Tornado red... except the door, which was distinctly Tornado Pink.. written off due to diesel on a wet road.... :( 2) 1992 (J-DUB!) G60 in Aqua Blue Pearl (written off, although 100% not my fault, and recently scrapped) 3) 1991 (H-Plate) G60 in Pearl Grey (current toy)

yup, that's what I reckon it is too.... just need to find some time... :?

I tried a known good ECU right at the start... I'm pretty certain that I've ruled out any electrical problems now, so it's time to strip the head off the block and see what's going on inside her... Bought a headgasket now though, so all of the costly bits are in my stock pile to put her together again I just need to find time to do it... :brickwall:
-
nope, they charge you extra for the resistor pack...
-
*cough* was replying to another poster.... *cough* Still haven't heard if he's checked the fan's earth.... if it's got a 12V live to a new resistor pack and a new fan motor, this is the only thing left it can be...
-
feeling your pain... mine came off the road august 2007 and hasn't turned a wheel (other than being towed to our new house) since... :( Driving a Passat estate diesel every day is keeping the fuel costs down, but is sooooooo goddam boring... I need to get the 'rado fixed and back on the road, but I know that I'll just end up spending more money and time on it that I simply don't have at the moment... but I also don't want to leave her there on our drive to rot... :brickwall:
-
yup, or RS components.... It's a thermal fuse that's blown, normally caused by dead bearings in the fan motor causing it to overheat, draw too much current, and start to overheat the resistor pack blowing the thermal fuse...
-
serviced my Passat and saved myself £200ish by spending 45 minutes of my own time, rather than paying a garage... Oh, and finally bought a head gasket for my Corrado..........
-
not unless they're really skinny wheels, or you've done some pretty major arch work!
-
ET 20 means that they'll stick out too far... you need a higher ET to be able to put spacers on to get it back down to 30/35ish, not a low one like 20...
-
this is what J-DUB looked like just after I installed the new engine... Not entirely pretty, but clean and tidy with a little colour coding for the hell of it... ;) It's very similar to how H-YYU looks at the moment, only with grey wings/engine bay!
-
nope, but the clutch master cylinder sits almost directly under the brake servo... ;)
-
I've lost count of the number of people that have asked me "is that an old Scirocco on your drive mate? Looks lovely and in great nick for it's age..." over the last few months since the new 'rocco was released... :brickwall: They seem a little confused when I tell them it's a heavily modified Corrado, not a Scirocco... I guess the only answer is to get it back on the road and get it seen a little more... ;)

Don't think there's anything wrong with the car as such... just that it's SORN'd at the moment and the guy isn't taking offers as I understand it.... he's dropped the price by at least a grand since I first saw the advert though... :?
-
I was about to write almost exactly what you wrote then Zak... :) 2.0 16V is a late body shell, so you can play with the offsets a little more to space 'em out a little more... I reckon a 35 offset on a 8" width will be spot on... 8) The wheels kinda remind me of some Porsche ones, but a bit flatter faced... I like 'em anyway... 8)
-
wishbone bushes are one of the main reasons for the front of the car feeling "not quite right" or vague in cornering... changing the wishbones isn't that bad a job, just give yourself plenty of time and space to do it... oh, and the wishbones are not seam welded from VAG... they'd crack in all sorts of odd places if they were...
-
glad the loom came in useful... nice to know that bits of J-DUB are being used to help other 'rados get rid of their problems... 8)
-
offset will depend on suspension and engine style... IE, VR6 will require different offsets from 4cylinder cars due to having a different suspension geometry setup...
-
I've been watching that S4 on ebay for a while... Think it's been on there a couple of times now... :?
-
I'm not sure if it's the same on the A6 all road as the S6, but simple things like changing the lambda sensors are seriously stupidly expensive... a mate of mine has just done the lambdas on an S6 avant and the bill was well over a grand! The whole engine and gearbox needs to be dropped to get at the lambdas! :cuckoo: I've heard problems with A6 all road suspension too... things like the electronics failing as well as actuators sticking as the suspension ride height is electrically adjustable from what I understand... :? S4 Avant for the win... That's what my next motor is probably going to be... then an LPG conversion will be the first modification! ;)
-
why do you want a side exit? All they do is throw hot, hydrocarbon-full (ie oily) gasses all over the rear tyre by the exhaust outlet and bugger up the grip from that tyre causing the car to become potentially unstable under heavy cornering... :? :cuckoo:
-
looks like some good work going into that car... 8) The GTI engineering head looks to have been pretty well ported too... does it have bigger valves too?
