After the cambelt broke while my brother was driving our mk4 golf (1.6 16v), a friend and i have been attempting to fix it but after putting it all together again there is nothing happening in piston 2. After removing the head and discovering 12 bent valves we found a very clean replacement head from a local spares dealer and fitted it with old cams and running gear along with new head gasket, bolts and belts. There is fueling on all 4 cylinders and there is spark. We replaced the coil in cylinder 2 for good measure. When running (poorly) there is no difference in idle when removing the coil or the injector plug on cylinder 2 indicating there is no bang what so ever. Removal of either on any other cylinder results in lumpier idle/stalling. I've just ran a compression test and these were the results. When cranking compression was much higher and then once stopped the reading settled down to give a result. Cylinder 1; static; 186 (around 250 when cranking) Cylinder 2; static; 170 (only around 200 when cranking) Cylinder 3; static; 256 (around 275 when cranking) Cylinder 4; static; 202 (around 275 when cranking) Results show cylinder 2 has the lowest results. The inter cam timing has been checked as has the crank to cam timing. The engine uses hydraulic tappets and has had new oil/filter with the head along with new plugs. The only thing i can think of now is a bent valve on the new head? possible worn/broken tappet? can anyone else offer their opinion as to what they think the problem could be? Car is a mk4 Golf with 1.6 16v (twin cam hydraulic tappet engine)

At night i drive with the fogs on because it lights up the road a lot better. There's no street lighting down the lanes near me so the fogs make quite a difference!

Donjon's classic green storm. Return from yorkshire...

New engine maybe for the best. I remember when i viewed it the chains were louder than normal and were probably on the way out anyway. Red rears and plates look nice! -
Where do people get their sdandwhich plates, ebay?

Will the car crank if the ignition switch is to blame ?
harryc replied to Mawrick's topic in Engine Bay
Ah right mine seems to catch if you back off the ignition a tiney bit when its just cranking over and over. Its only when hot though.. -

can't remember the number that was on it - I took it out of my "parts car" passat (which I had replaced the switch in not long ago) and it's black in color. Just seem to "sense" that the times it cranks for very long - if I "lift" the key a bit it fires.........:( Just tried this and i think this is exactly the problem with mine. When turning the ignition it just turn and turns but the moment you back off the ignition key it fires (or at least tries...), really weird?! -
Seriously? It's a peice of p1ss to make a proper 4 fuse, 4 relay loom mate. Doesn't take long either and saves you £50 on switches every couple of years. 4 fuses and 4 relays (1 per bulb) seems a tad over kill, but I like to have 3 bulbs remain working if one fuse blows, unlike some other shared fuse/relay looms that take the whole lot out if one fails. For a nice spec loom, simply get:- 4 of these - http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/170 1 of these - http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/181 Some of this - http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/70 And some of these - http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product_list/2 A pair of head light plugs from Neil It can be built for a lot less money obviously. Even with standard voltage bulbs, a replacement loom makes a difference! Nice looking kit, looking at the fused relays it says they won't fit into that relay box though.

Very weird vr6 hot start but not when door is open problem!!
harryc replied to harryc's topic in Engine Bay
Anyone? I've got a list of things that may be to blame; FPR Ignition Switch Fuel Pump or relay Temp sensor (dont know which one(s) could cause this?) Any ideas of where would be a good place to start? I've seen a new bosch fpr is £65 from europarts so dont want to go replacing this if its unlikely to solve the problem... -

Mine was particularly bad when hot starting. I've since tried a new engine earth, next up is fuel pump relay, checking the ignition switch, new fpr...... -

Im having similar problems... :( -
^ Thats what i meant

Don't think it plugs into anything? isnt it a spare lead for an extra sensor thats not used?? (INFORMATION MAY BE ENTIRELY FICTIONAL!)

Im gonna stick it in here to save starting another thread but i also need a set of headlamp retaining screws, where's the best place for those?

Very weird vr6 hot start but not when door is open problem!!

I've just replaced the engine earth and still no luck...Still the same problem. I drive the car for a bit and park up. Then when i jump back it again it just keeps turning over. Open the door and starts instantly!!! :help:  -
Thanks Pete, on my Mk2 i used a 1.3 gearbox mount from GSF as this was believed to be stiffer. Sounds like it maybe the same part though. Any ideas on a FPR?
-
I need to replace the gearbox mount and am going to replace the fpr to try and smooth the slight running and hot start issues. Where is the best place to get replacements? GSF any good or both VW jobbies? Any advantage of aftermarket FPR's on a stock setup?
-
Taxed it. Then looked at it, dirty and battered, sulked a bit, then took the mk4 to work....

Did you get that battery cover from vw? Any idea what the part number is? Looks amazing btw!!
