Sorry, it was through performance direct. It's a second car on a classic 3000 mile policy though. it seems to me that cheap insurance is based on luck.
  4. Well, at least bias valve back on both sides and from the abs to both the fronts.
  5. I need to replace the solid brake lines on my car and was wondering if anyone who has done this has written down the lengths of pipe needed? cheers
  6. 3 failed with one advisory, might as well do as much as possible.... just need to find some pipe, a flare tool and some experience. Also for the first time of ownership it passed the cat test on the first run.
  7. Red ticket :( Need to replace my brake lines, i did give them a scrub up with some wire wool when i did the rest of the brake work but they're still knackered apparently. Bored of working on brakes now!
  8. Due to various non car related issues the MOT is now this Friday!
  9. MOT Booked this Thursday morning!! fingers crossed!

A friend of mine uses them and highly recommended them. I gave them a shout and the guy i spoke too was very good, had a great chat about a VR engine he was fitting into a Mk1. Their price and quoting service was good but i was able to get a better deal from another company that Sky couldn't match.
  11. Brake overhaul complete!! I forgot to take any pictures of the rears but i'll no doubt have a wheel off again sometime soon! New ATE discs, VAG bearings, Mk4 callipers, new splash shields and new bolts all round! Next stop MOT!!!
  12. Sorry, you're about 2 years too late
  13. Another couple of jobs crossed off! Yummy new VAG discs... Also fitted a new fuel lift pump once i'd managed to get the locking ring off!! Next job is to get the Mk4 rears on and new discs fitted, some serious irwin bolt gripping needed for this though!
  14. As it's been over a year since i've updated this i thought i'd better add something! Just sorted out a limited milage classic car insurance policy, Changing the front discs as well as chucking on some mk4's on the rear..... all she then needs is tax and MOT and we'll be rocking! Watch this space, i'll pop up some pictures of the caliper swap.
  15. Tucked in next to the garage at my mums house
  16. Just got the best quote with performance direct, no one else could touch it! They'd honour my NCD that i'm running on another vehicle and on a 5000 mile policy i could get it for £300.... over 5000 mile it went up to nearly £1000, but i suppose they benchmark it for use as a second vehicle. Spoke to some right chavvy sounding woman there who was very helpful, she could do it on a classic policy for £250! and i could do some sort of weird excess insurance for £30ish where i basically wouldn't have to pay the £250 compulsary if i claimed. One big thing i did find though is that if i started the policy next month rather than this month the price went up by over £100!!
  17. Changed the expansion tank so i can now see that there's coolant in there and sprayed my Mk4 rears ready to fit (once TPS actually finds me a pair of splash shields!)
  18. I used the osram silverstars which where significantly better than the originals, nice white light instead of yellow. I then switched to the nightbreakers which again where significantly "whiter" next to the silverstars....... i do however find the beam is a bit narrow, as in it doesn't light the verges like some others but they're definitely bright!
  19. Is that for every size lead they do as i know they do different gauges for the vr? the £35 ones are 7mm
  20. yeah, petec on here is the guy you want to speak to http://www.dubpower.co.uk/ :D
  21. Renewal prices always go up, that why you should shop around 2l 16v is a group 17 insurance for some obscure reason, so, like walesy said it's not going to make hardly any difference. give these guys a call http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk/, i spoke to them last year for a quote on another car but while i was talking to them i got one for the corrado. the guy i spoke to was great, had a good chat about a mk1 with a vr engine transplant from a corrado. he said they benchmark the price according to age, under 25 was a minimum of £500 but over was £300
  22. http://www.coveryourcar.co.uk/store/home.php £145 for their 4 layer stormforce option
  23. Hi all... Thought some people might find this useful if they're having issues getting their 16v started. I've been looking at the purpose of sensors in K and KE-Jetronic systems and found some useful info here and there. one thing confused me though... The early valvers use a thermotime switch to control the 5th (cold start) injector but the later KE-Jet 9a engines dont use this sensor yet still have the cold start injector.... what controls the opening and closing of this in this system? also found this useful page, if anyone cares http://www.covin.co.uk/tech_2.htm
  24. http://www.vwspares.co.uk/ are good http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ are ok...ish or a cash account at TPS http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/ which deal genuine parts (just tell them you service a load of cars and they'll be fine)
  25. I think some ball ended allen keys help on this one too, i had the slam panel and radiator off when i did this which made it significantly easier. Get some mechanics paper towel too, its quite rough so quite effective at removing old scummy oil from mounting faces, etc. might be worth thinking of doing other bits like the outlet flanges, thermostat and possible the water pump while you've got the system drained down.. all relatively inexpensive.
