  1. been fine so far, but then a 16v rocker cover doesnt really get touched by much. id guess its some sort of ceramic coating on that shrick manifold. have seen guys with fabricated turbo manifolds etc get them ceramic coated so think its quite common practice. that would defo be hard wearing- they coat the braking surfaces of high-end mountain bike rims with the stuff.
  2. halfords black VHT spray paint looks like that, did my rocker cover in it.

    passat box

checked on way home this morning, on current box (CTM code from a mk4 Passat ABF engine) 70mph=3000rpm in 5th. cant find ratios for this box anywhere, but itll do 85mph in 3rd which is fun for coming off sliproads behind chav wagons hehehe

    passat box

on both the o2a boxes ive had in my passat (both boxes were originally in passats) 70 has been about 3500 rpm in 5th.
  5. RAC did a windscreen on one of works pool cars, 10 month old renault laguna estate- they came and did it and left without telling anyone, i found it a day later with the tape stuff they use to stop the windscreen sliding down baked on to the roof by the sun. turns out it shouldve been removed after an hour. RAC paid to have the roof resprayed . . .
  6. excellent cheers for that, had to change the ingition barrel to keep the imobiliser when i did the engine change so my door locks dont match the ignition key any more!
  7. defo good idea :) they also put one on mk3/4 deisel passats, ive been trying to get hold of one for ages tho! theres some interesting reading about undertrays, some guys on the ecomodder forum got some pretty impressive fuel savings on a mk1 prius from a simple front undertray that was flush with the bottom of the front bumper and went back about a foot or so- so in our world that means more speed fora given fuel consumption! hehe
  8. cheers, although the roof bars are going back on soon, but have polished them up after i discovered they are cast aluminium and polish up really nicely! need them for putting mountain bikes and canoes on the roof 8) the lights are mainly a performance upgrade as stock B3 lights are pants even with osram silverstars and an uprated loom (just 2 H4 bulbs and thats it!, no extra spots for the main beam) although i happen to like the way they look too :) think it will look better once i get rid of the B4 front bumper though!
  9. very nice! i always find it hard to get organised too. how did you go about re tumbling the locks? did you follow an online guide anywhere?
  10. whilst we're doing motorway pics . . . heres my passat on the M20: proper brown trousers time! driver of astra had had a skin full, police threw the book at him!
  11. hehe i dont notice the size as its my first car (didnt drive for 3 years whike i was at uni) so its normal size for me :) all the modern repmobiles i used to drive at work are actually a fair bit bigger than these are- a mk6 passat is HUGE compared to a mk3. and they have windows all the way to the edges, so easiest car to park, ever! hehe
  12. I know its not a rado, but its nearly the same underneath, thought some of you guys might like to see a little bit more of the car in my sig :D Its very much a work in progress, and have a list as long as my arm of plans and jobs to do, but its slowly coming together and should be ready for next years shows- I know most people run these wagons as interim cars before buying a "better" ;)VW but i thought I'd be different and get this one back to better-than-new condition- finding all the missing trim, sorting all the dodgy electrics, replacing the worn out 8v lump and uprating the suspension components- then finally get the bodywork up to show standard. I got the thing very much by accident when my gf's dad bought it for the numberplate on it, spec went something like this: 168k miles most of the electrics (sunroof, windows, heater, mirrors) not working big ugly hole in the drivers seat worn out suspension but i thought it was cool and different and had much potential, the body was straight and it had a years tax+test on it so i snapped it off him for £300 8) First task was get it clean, PO was a smoker so it was a bit grim inside. then the heate matrix blew, so had to strip the dash out. while i was doing this i came accross a perfect interior out of a 70,000mile 1991 GT estate for princely sum of £50 on ebay, includig the rare-ish door speaker pods so that went in, much nicer: nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :( :censored: nice and cosy now: then got given a set of very rare german market only factory fully tinted tail lights :) and decided to colour code the GT spec arch+door trims. At GTI inters '07: that winter i decided to sort the suspension, Koni TA's all round with PI springs and polybushes, really tightened up the handling and enjoyed driving it round like that for a while. I also thought it would be a good idea to put B4 bumpers on it, but was never relly sure i liked it once id done it :( However, by summer '08 it was up on 193k and the tired 8v lump was showing its age by giving everyone following me a nice oil smoke screen, so after thinkin about scrapping it and getting a rado, i decided to bite the bullet and go the whole hog and put a new lump in it- the 2.0 16v ABF out of this, which I found for £300  didnt look like that for long ;) : that gave up its engine, gearbox, most of its wiring and full 5-stud running gear- including 288mm front brakes. I rebuilt the engine with all new bits and refurbed the subby and made it all sparkly and new. Final engine spec is: Fully ported and polished head with new SS and guides, 3 angle valve seats All new VW mains and conrod shells new piston rings+ honed block new water pump, cambelt and belts new VW gaskets and oil seals. modified airbox (removed warm air valve etc) decat pipe genuine VW long life exhaust Did all the work myself (apart from the head), was the first engine ive ever done any work on but seemed to all go ok, and once id wired the immobiliser it started first time! sweet as a nut! Its running on Digi 3.2 management which seems fine for the time being, have a crazy idea involving a eaton M62 but that can wait until 2010  A few pics from the conversion: oooo shiny :) hmmmm, think theres a bit missing: yay it fitted :) While it was all apart i added a set of hella dual headlights, so this is where im at so far: Engine has about 4k on it since the rebuild and no probs so far :) Plans for the future are finish installing my amp and components, finish refurning my porsche 928 wheels, put the B3 bumper back on (but colour coded and smoothed :D) then sort all the little parking dents and respray the whole car in 2k paint. thanks for reading
  13. another thing i found to shut the tailgate up is on part 10 on the ETKA diagram provided, on the early version of this part there is a nylon bush that wears out on the hook where the latch on the tailgate grabs on to, this allows the tailgate to move around slightly. they superceeded this part on late mk4 passats (maybe others) with a part that uses a small metal roller instead of the nylon bush so takes all the slack out, and is a direct replacement. part number 333827511C is the one you want.
  14. they do work as they say on the tin, but im having issues with them clunking when steering when parking etc as i think they are binding on the rubber top mount. dont think its anything to worry about but its a bit annoying, not sure ill be leaving mine in, but cant find any suitable 60mm springs at the mo! careful on what ones you get as theres 3 differnet types- youll probably need the early VR6 type which are 105mm diameter.
  15. only works if the wiper relay is a number 99 one (think the non intermittant one is number 19?), although i assume all the corrados got them as they were the flagship VW of the time, normally it was only the top spec golfs and passats that got the 99 relays :)
  16. yes theyre meant to be loose, the spring pushes them up against the bearing so the spring can rotate with the strut body, and the shock shaft itself is locked against the non-moving part of the bearing which sits in the top mount rubber, so doesnt rotate.
  17. ok just taken mine to bits as one needed a new bulb, they are in fact W5W NOT 207 bulbs, back to halfords we go . . .
  18. ahh sorry, didnt realise you had taken the spring off! so yes the black one is a mk2 spec one. I have a spare set of mk2 spec rear calipers that were on the passat originally- i take it you'd need a drivers side one? will happily post it up for the price of the postage.
  19. mk2 rear calipers had a dirty great spring on the outside of the handbrake mech so theyre both mk3 items, evidently they just revised the casting at a later date. the carriers will be the same so dont worry bout that. the calipers on the back of my passat came off a 1995 mk4 passat and look identical to the dirty lucas caliper you have, complete with the nylon stop on the handbrake mech. i would use them both tbh
  20. hmm mine also does the twanging thing when steering, but id put it down to the lwoering spring caps . . . hmmm im gonna take mine to bits tomorrow and investigate, although a few weeks back i did spray a lpoad of spray lube around under the top plate and it shut the twanging up for a week or so, then it came back . . . so maybe the bearing is dry or something. ill keep you posted if i find anything weird.
  21. got mine off german ebay
  22. well im gonna take them to bits soon, i think ive got a solution, ill keep you updated . . . :)
