DirtyTorque's G60*Now with 8 more valves*
ProdigalSon replied to dirtytorque's topic in Members Gallery
 Good work, how many more hp did you get? -
Haha, it would be if I wasn't now 6 inches from the car infront! I can't move till he does. You are welcome to take her for a quick spin one day for all your help.  :shocked!:  :norty:    :bonk:  :bday: :compress: :joker2: :salute: :notworthy: :thumbleft: You're on.

What a piece of poo, why did they add in the plastic bit? I wonder if I could just attach it like yours and do without? Hmmm.... I guess so, why not? It might be a bit barn-style, but it might just get you to the dealer's on Monday... I'd put some effort into making it good and sturdy if you want to use it like that for longer though.

With all that torque, only having 3rd and 4th shouldn't be too much of a problem!  Lovely looking car Jim, don't know why I hadn't seen this thread before today  Hope your gearbox woes are sorted soon
-
They used a plastic bit for the gear linkage? :camp: :cuckoo: At least that explains why it broke - was wondering how my metal part could have sheared! Thanks for the additional pics, I see how your VR differs - same principle but a later design I guess... Should've asked which engine you have  :salute: No probs. Glad to have helped :D

Badgeless sleeper, eh? Like the Goof  I'd like to get an 8V grille badge (if they exist), as it would be strictly honest and true but could make people underestimate  :norty:
-
That is the thread I was on about  Used it myself when 1st and 2nd were becoming hard to select :salute: Could've used some pics though as it is hard to visualise until you are looking at the naked gearstick!

OK, here's the deal: 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdf_DSC9049.jpg[/attachment:18zqsh5i] _DSC9050.jpg[/attachment:18zqsh5i] Looks as though your metal bracket is broken. This can be replaced without too much hassle, just have to unbolt the old one, grease then fit the new one and reconnect the cable, then align the gear mech according to the 'gear alignment' thread (as per my earlier pics, ironically!) If the cable end is gone you may have to replace that entire cable, which means pulling the old one out, something that is not easy to access  Hope that helps, and that you get gears back soon!
-
Whoa! Didn't see those posts while I was making pretty pictures  Er, if that piece has broken, then you won't get any front/back movement from the gearstick into the gearbox, so you have probably lost all gears... Will have a look now on mine - back in a mo! My bad - that cable does 'side to side' so you will have lost Reverse, 1st, 2nd, and 5th :bad-words: You may be able to drive on 3rd and 4th but you are liable to kill your clutch  Pics to explain coming up...

Whoa! Didn't see those posts while I was making pretty pictures  Er, if that piece has broken, then you won't get any front/back movement from the gearstick into the gearbox, so you have probably lost all gears... Will have a look now on mine - back in a mo!

Some pics, to help work it all out:  stromlaufplan_gamma4.pdf_DSC9043.jpg[/attachment:17vhmd9q] Corrado92.pdf_DSC9044.jpg[/attachment:17vhmd9q] passat climatronic wiring diags.pdf_DSC9045.jpg[/attachment:17vhmd9q] climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdf_DSC9046.jpg[/attachment:17vhmd9q] 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdf_DSC9047.jpg[/attachment:17vhmd9q] _DSC9048.jpg[/attachment:17vhmd9q]

It's DEAD EASY to look at the gearstick mech, just pull gently upwards on the plastic gaiter surround and it will pop off - usually the back first. If you unscrew the gear knob by turning it anticlockwise until it's obviously loose, you can remove the knob, gaiter and surround in one piece. Once that's done, you should see the mechanical bits :D Do a search for 'gear linkage alignment' and you should have some joy. It's probably either that you can't push the gear lever left enough or forward enough to select reverse, or the small circlip on the side of the mech is missing and it is making gear selection a bit random... Good luck, let us know if you can't get it sorted.

TRY PEANUT BUTTER  Do it! want to see how that comes out. I have loads of matt black enamel paint (that I used to detail/de-chrome my tail lights) that would work a treat on the headlight surrounds. You just need to mask the clear plastic and paint away. Last time I gave mine a big wash and wax, I used black boot polish on the faded plastic trim - looked great, but didn't last much more than a week in all the sunshine we've had!

I'm sure there are independent VW specialists near you, although I'll leave it for others to confirm and recommend as I don't know of any down there. Have you got a copy of the Bentley factory repair guide? At very least you could leave it in the car in an obvious way when dropping it off for maintenance work  Anyhow, hope you get this sorted soon and for little outlay - G60s are wonderful engines when they are running right, and it is a crying shame what's happened to yours
-
Don't think I've done that, but on several occasions I have done the other variant - sigh deeply and visualise a growing hole in my pocket/wallet/bank account!
-
 Sucks. Any idea what next? I'll ask GC for his strobe, so we can check timing again... :salute:

Speaking of rebuild, my load leveller has arrived so I'm running out of excuses for why I don't take out the engine now! :pale:  I had to 'modify' it a bit as it was an Ebay cheapy - functional but very basic - and I want it to run smoothly when it has hundreds of kilos of engine and gearbox hanging from it  passat climatronic wiring diags.pdf_DSC9042.jpg[/attachment:16y4h9uz] climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdf_DSC9038.jpg[/attachment:16y4h9uz] 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdf_DSC9039.jpg[/attachment:16y4h9uz] _DSC9041.jpg[/attachment:16y4h9uz] About £8 of bits from my local hardware store, and it seems ready for action... Just need to order stretch bolts/engine consumables from the dealer and set a date for work to begin *gulp* :salute:

The definitive "What Air Filter?" discussion thread
ProdigalSon replied to CazzaVR's topic in Engine Bay
OK, fair enough, it wasn't clear where in the rev range we were talking  Besides which, Audi man has a turbo, therefore intake pressure will be way above atmospheric at full throttle, so I'm not sure what he was trying to demonstrate / argue there! Most normally aspirated engines hit 98KPA at wide open throttle, which is near as damn it atmospheric. Could even be 101KPA on a thick day, there are slight variances. Fiddling about with MAF guazes and filters won't produce any discernible differences there. If you were to junk the whole intake system and replace with throttle bodies, that's when you start seeing differences. Usually because the torque is shifted way up the rev range. Instead of long, torquey pulses from the stock intake, you get short little blips of air, but the actual amount of air the cylinder can draw in does not change. There is a misconceptiopn that altering the intake allows *more* air in, which isn't true. The *timing* of the air pulses entering the cylinders can change, but you can't fill a 1 litre cylinder with 1.2 litres of air. Unless you force it in with a turbo of course. All makes sense, interested to learn that NA engines are so close to atmospheric at WOT :study: :salute: It's easy to forget that the engine is a hugely dynamic system and you have to consider the effects of changes at all rpm to get a decent view of performance changes (good or bad). Yes, cams, throttles and displacement make much more difference - we just got stuck on inlet stuff due to the thread title! Ditto here! True. Although a diesel would pull your arm into the intake before it even thought about stalling  Very nearly saw that happen once :D  Whoa! Sounds like one of those grisly UTube vids of nasty accidents :pale: It's the law of diminishing returns, see it every day at work  At some point it just becomes pointless (or more often cost prohibitive) to try to wring more power out. -
The definitive "What Air Filter?" discussion thread

But a petrol engine will always be in vacuum when the throttle is closed or partially open, so what's the point? I think the point is that we're interested in the other end of the rev range, not idle or slightly open throttle - unrestrictive intakes will always have more benefit at high revs as the air is sucked into the cylinder over a very short period of time, so the 'breathing through a straw analogy' becomes highly relevant to the maximum amount of air that can be drawn in at the top end. I admit, it is probably tenths of a percent in a real engine, but in pure engineering terms, we're interested in the ideal system, no? To go to the other extreme, if you blocked off your inlet, your engine would stall because it couldn't suck in what it needs. We may have to agree to disagree on this one  but I do think that the action of the piston moving away from the valves causes a 'sucking' effect that tries to suck in what's needed, but may achieve less than 100% fill depending on the ability of the air to flow in unhindered. Limited air fill might only mean that the air/fuel ratio is a little rich at high revs, so no great damage (and may protect the valves from getting too hot), but not ideal performance either... The MAF gauze is there to straighten the air, which is critical with turbo engines as they can suck air "around" the MAF element and miss it completely. Audi man has too much time on his hands and is trying to fix things that aren't broken. No disagreement there! Engineering types - set us straight please! Willing to be proved wrong :salute: -
The "what I did to my Corrado today" thread...

Stick a bicycle inner tube over them (the whole spring and everything) and you'll never have any problems with adjustments, your seals will last longer, and they stay looking new underneath. I take it you need plenty of lube to get the rubber on? :norty: It must be quite a tight fit, no?  -
I wonder if M0 NKY is still available...

Laughed. Out loud. :D

Scoop on original Bosch lambda for G60 here. Also get it on a wideband and get the fuelling sorted properly (via the CO pot). Got mine done for MOT reasons earlier this year and went from around 18mpg to over 30mpg (actually got 32mpg from last tank) with definite improvement in throttle response as well

Took my front nearside rim to my local garage to get it rebalanced after I managed to ping off the old counterweight as I gently kerbed it  Good news was they didn't charge me. Way to build loyalty dudes :salute:  Kidlington Tyre and Exhaust Centre - go there! (free plug) -
Whoa  That's awesome 8) When did you get that plate done?!? Wait... is that photoshopped? Wow, that is some cleeeeeeean art my friend. I wouldn't have guessed if Corradude hadn't mentioned flames too  [/fake craziness] You are :cuckoo: bro, but funny with it, so that's OK. Thanks for picking up the KR bits tonight, let me know when my load leveller arrives and it will be my turn for engine stripdown funtimes.
