  1. They actually pop out very easily. I masked up the mirror surround, inserted a wooden spatula under the mirror and just popped it out. I think you have to watch that you don't snap off the contacts from the back of the mirror tho (Like me- Doh!) Cheers Mike
  2. If its any help to anyone- Mine had a new one fitted a couple of months ago. It will clear fog in minutes- even ice is gone by three- four minutes. It goes on to get actually quite warm to the touch. The original one on the other side doesn't even come close. I would guess these things just gradually deteriorate over time :(
  3. Hi, Whilst I would guess it would be more an air lock than anything else, I would get the stat checked just in case. My stat disintegrated last week and locked shut- needless to say what followed involved lots and lots of steam action  I was lucky that I was only twenty yards away from a VW specialist- otherwise it would have been a long wait and a big recovery fee. Cheers Mike
  4. Following on from the post about heated mirrors (Which luckily are still working on mine :) ), My car has heated washer jets fitted but its very difficult to know whether they are working or not. What I do know is that I had my rear demister on for at least ten minutes when driving into work this morning and the frost still had not melted at all from anywhere around the jets :? Do they only work when water is being pumped through them or are mine just knackered :x Cheers Mike
  5. Steve- The 996 is the name of the alarm module. This can be linked up to more than one model of alarm siren. My car has a 996 CAT 1 alarm unit linked to a 904 siren unit- This definitely has a key operated function on top of the siren- I am just not entirely sure what it does :? . The key slot is hidden under a dustcap mind!! Cheers Mike
  6. It cost £116- which considering that the car broke down right next to their garage so I couldn't have taken it anywhere else sounds pretty good to me. Price included all the parts, seals etc and a coolant flush and refill with G12 so I am chuffed. It a good garage actually (Volkspartz- Durham). The guy who owns it has had a VR6 storm from new- fully garaged and 30k on the clock!- could be one of the nicest left! Cheers mike
  7. Well - It doesn't sound too bad. The thermostat had not only jammed but it had disintegrated. The garage has ordered a new thermostat and thermostat housing and should be back on the road tonight :D :D . Thanks for the advise though. Might have enough money to eat this month now :) Cheers
  8. Hi, My Corrado VR6 has performed its monthly party piece which involves it, well, simply breaking down  . This time I was driving to ma local VW specialist to pick up four new Toyo Proxes when the engine temp light came on. Managed to limp it to the garage, opened it up only to see steam pouring out of the pressure release valve in the header tank  . The guys filled it back with water- started it up only for the same thing to happen again. It doesn't appear to be the head gasket (No white smoke, No water in oil, No combustion gases detetected in the steam) but whatever the problem it is causing serious pressure in the system :? . Anyone got any idea what it could be?? (I was thinking down the lines of water pump, jammed thermoststat etc). Cheers for any advice Mike
  9. Louis I had just the same problem. Try turning the key switch on the top of the alarm speaker to the other setting- this worked on mine. You might notice that it only makes the sound when the alarm thinks the bonnet is open- press the bonnet switch and it could stop. In the end it got fixed when my car went in for a some accident damage repair- when it came back the 'faint siren' noise had stopped and the alarm was MUCH louder  :D . I can only guess they cleaned up a bad connection/ earth? Cheers Mike
  10. I had the same problem myself- The power feed to the mirror gets corroded and you lose the circuit. The glass itself is easy to prise off but be very careful when disconnecting the wires- the terminals on the mirror side are very fragile and can snap off (Iknow because thats what I did  , I haven't dared to ask how much a replacement is yet :( ) Cheers
  11. Hi, I am thinking about getting my alloy wheels refurbed but can't afford to have the car off the road while they are being done. How much joy do you think I am going to have getting a couple of old 15" wheels from a scrappers that I can run around on. What other VW's used this kind of wheel? Cheers Mike
  12. You mention the sticker on the tailgate. There are actually two more barcode stickers, one on each sill under the doors. If one or both of these is missing it can indicate possible accident repair at some point. :) Is that true :? I can't even see the space where mine should be
  13. Red corrado, probably a G reg 16v going south on the A! just below team valley industrial estate. They really do stand out in red don't they  . Nice car- I was in a mystic blue storm going the other way. Cheers
  14. Yes you are right there- It is a cracking looking car :D . Might be worth getting a shot with the leather interior up on the site. My brother has a scirroco and I bet the leather trim makes a big difference to the feel of the cabin. Cheers Mike
  15. Beetlebug, My car was repaired by J&B Coachworks @ Houghton-le-Spring. Came back looking immaculate- needless to say I was well chuffed. I am not 100% sure that you could get away with that rear quarter- especially if its been bent in a little cos then it won't fit the line of your new door :( . Anyway thats just my thought- let me know if you want the number. Cheers Mike
  16. I have fitted boge dampers on a Vauxhall- Found them very good- very much like OE kit but just a little extra stiffness. Have got bilsteins on the Corrado now- love them but they are a little bit hard Cheers Mike
  17. My VR storm romps to 140mph :D :D - never had the balls to go faster  . Its always strange because I nail it right up to the red line in fourth, drop into fifth and it must fall just below the powerband cos it lags for a second at 120 mph before pulling like a bitch from 125- 140mph. Its a great feeling but I only ever attempt it if there are at least two lanes on the road. Cheers
  18. I agree with you on this jersey storm. I know you were looking for a real top end storm, and the last thing you would need if you ever had an accident would be a load of grief about how much the car was worth. I like the sound of that agreed value policy. I am also going make an effort to enquire about how easy it would be to buy the car back of the insurers when I renew later this year! Cheers Mike
  19. Beetlebug, I am sorry to see whats happened to you car. There are so many idiots on the road nowadays that I don't feel safe taking my car out anymore :( . Sorry to pile on the bad news but I had very similar accident to yours about three months ago ie new door, rear quarter etc and the bill was over £2500. :( It would be worth trying to get it bought back of the insurers and get in done on the cheap. What I do have is an itemised list of prices for all the bits my car needed so let me know if you want them. Cheers
  20. Hello, Just wondering whether anyone has a manual for a laserline 996 V1 alarm they could scan or photocopy and post :) . I can't get one anywhere  . I have also found a company that sells replacement laserline alarm fobs. PM me if you want the details . Cheers Mike
  21. Hello, just a niggle really. Have had the car back from the bodyshop after an accident repair which involved having a new door fitted. Everyting works just fine except the sealing strip on the bottom of the window doesn't fit tightly enough against the glass. Its not flapping about or anything its just I can see water streaming down the window and going into the door. It looks like the correct part- is it worth taking it back? and if so, how will they be able to put it right?. Cheers
  22. Its a funny thing that my old vauxhall corsa  was specced up as a 44 litre tank and if you let it run down you got, well, 44 litres in it. By the sound of it we are all about ten litres shy of where it needs to be. A puzzlement really :? Oh well cheers for the replies Mike
  23. Thanks Kev- That will be where the most of my missing 15 Litres have gone then :) Cheers
  24. There is a lot of truth in what you are saying Rodders , its just that I have always wanted a Corrado and so I was even more chuffed when I managed to get a Storm. What I am trying to say is even if it just a couple of badges and a paint job- it means more than that to me. Have never seen a Scirroco storm though- They must be far rarer than the Corrados (aren't they) cos I have never seen one in my life- bet they were nice though. Cheers
