  1. I run Monroe Gas dampers (previous owner fitted) so no experience of KYB on a C. Theres a few people running them (forum search KYB). KYB shocks are very popular in Jap car / Impreza circles and well priced from buypartsby. Will do, cheers :salute:
  2. yeah you're right, deflection will be reduced with a thicker shaft cos it won't flex as much. imho, VW have always undertuned their engines and over-engineered everything else for reliability!
  3. davidwort's item is really good too, I forgot about those! Hopeing to pick one up to keep the engine in situ when I swap the subframe assemblies over.

  5. no one should be able to round of a clutch plate bolt, they're not exactly torqued up very high! Six-sided hub nut sockets are awesome though :clap: As already mentioned, should be a 9 or 10mm socket.
  6. plumber's teflon tape (that really thin white stuff that sits in screw threads) is really useful if you can't get a rad switch to seat properly :salute:
  7. Ohhh I see, I commented on that already! Doesn't matter if your driveshaft is as thick as a tree, if it narrows then THAT is the weakest point and the torque transmission will only be as much as the narrowest part can cope with. I still say that shaft is fine, they're solid steel and as already pointed out steel is fookin strong. If you REALLY want I can calculate how much torque you can put through that bar (given the diameter) without it twisting/shearing/deforming but it'll be in Newton metres.

  9. I don't think crane ownership is all that bad: I mean, you must KNOW it's gonna be big and heavy before you buy it! I have a cheapo one off ebay. The main (and possibly only) difference I've noticed with it not being a Sealey/Draper/Clarke one is that the welds are a lot messier that I would have expected from a more expensive item. I rented a crane way back when I had an early Mk2 16v (see Boost Monkey's old cars thread). Having never done it before, I swapped the engine and moved the gearbox over in a day. I think from start to finish it took me 6 hours with a reasonable lunch break. I had to do it in a day because the crane was about £40 a day! This is what made me decide that at some point I would like to buy a crane. Mine gets plenty of use, at the moment it's not doing much but recently helped put my spare KR onto my engine stand, and in the near future I think it will be employed to help ProdigalSon remove his engine, so compared to crane hire of £40 a day (even though they're branded :camp: ) it's already justified itself as a purchase.   14. could be mate, and I could easily be wrong. But i've had to jimmy plenty of mk2 fan switches in my time and i'm pretty sure that 1 + 2 = slow. I've had them spark on me too, you really have to ram the wire/ tweezers (what! they fit!) right in to make a good contact. I used a paperclip once but that was too thin so to speak. It glowed red and exploded. Dying is not fun.
  15. 1 and 2 spark cos you made a bad connection - that should be the low speed fan mode. 1 and 3 is high speed fan mode. 1 is the positive line, so 2 and 3 will do nothing together. hth, Jon. p.s. do you have messenger?

  19. oh right, that is actuallt the gearbox mount. apparently you can swap it out with the engine in place but i've never done it that way. Hopefully someone else will post something more helpful.
  20. You'll need to get pics buddy. That is the triangular engine mount on the driver's side and it has 3 bolts that go vertically from engine bracket to mount, but then some more holding the bracket to the engine. Depends where and if the bolt/s have snapped or whether the mount has given up. More info required! :salute:

Torque curve looks awesome. 120lbft from 2000rpm (i.e. peak valver torque) must be amazing! :shock: ProdigalSon's G60 seemed to have the same torque as mine when he was in a couple of gears higher (not that my car is anywhere near running perfectly, but...) so I'm guessing that is bags of fun to drive? Must make overtaking much easier!
  22. Confusing indeed! If Mr. Edwards could elaborate and perhaps clarify in one fell swoop that would be ace and radical :grin: None of my oils return to the top: they all stop with about 4" of the piston (including top threaded part) sticking out from the bottom sleeve/encasement. If you pull them out to their longest limit, they will always settle at this ~4" length too. So either they're all fine or all broken? :shrug: I scrubbed the nicest ones up this evening in the hope that someone will say they are fine and I can get on with my build :salute:
  23. Ditto exhaust hangers for knocking noise, I've had this before. Also, what is a "high" vibration? :scratch:
  24. I've been looking for these for months and months, even back when I had my Mk2s. There are company who will sell you generic lengths of interesting cross-section rubber strips/seals which I've used on cars in times gone past, but I think the best bet would prob be ask someone who is breaking a car or even someone who is selling doors as they may still be attached.
