  1. Fair play for doing them with the engine in! Considering I have a crane now, and I have about eleventy-five hundred and two things to do in the bay, I'm probs gonna hoist mine out and do it all at the same time. Thanks for the DIY of how to change mounts with engine in though!

  3. nope, they never had a manual rack on the C, the reason you can drive your car I guess is there is no fluid, if it was full of fluid you'd be trying to force the fluid through the valves in the rack with your own strength as well as moving the wheels. golf's without PS are pretty heavy to drive even the 1.3's, but the corrado has heavier bodywork up front and was always sold as a more expensive luxury car compared to the golf, I don't think leaving off PAS would ever really have been a sensible option. My dad's old passat estate had no power steering, heavy old car that was, but it also had a steering wheel the size of a truck :lol: Yeah, my rack on the C at the mo has a leaky pipe and cos the fluid pressure increases with engine speed, the reservoir empties itself kinda quick :( It's heavy don't get me wrong, but then PAS racks weren't designed to be used without fluid in them! I just wonder how light corrado steering would be when comparing a dead PAS with a manual steering as my Golf felt like a feather car after i put the manual on!

  5. Does anyone know if the Corrado came with a manual steering rack? And before anyone starts whining about straining muscles, My PAS rack is 100% empty at the mo and I can still drive it...although parallels are a little tricky! Either way, the manual rack would be a lot lighter than a dead PAS rack - certainly was on my Mk2.
  6. Yeah, mounts can be a PITA. I'm surprised that some people would change them with the engine in place, although the front isn't too hard to do. I guess it's more out of necessity than laziness! Are they VT mounts literally chunks of metal or do they have some rubber / polymer inserts?

Still need to order gearbox mount, get the LBJs from Prodigal for casholas, and spruce up all those rolling shell items to see what is usable.
  9. there's a setting on good multimeters called continuity. This basically makes a beeping or buzzing sound when the two probes have a clear electrical path between them. For example, you will get continuity if you touch the battery - terminal and the earth lead, or anywhere on the chassis (within reason!)

  11. Yeah....which dealer is that at! I asked in person and they said £85+vat before the discount... Or are you talking about just the basic leads without the connectors that fit down the plug holes? In which case they're not really complete HT leads...
  12. Yes it could definitely be leads, as they are what connect the dizzy and plugs after all :D
  13. I wouldn't believe a lot of hype about hi-tech leads that store charge up for a stronger spark. Current is current, and replacement standard leads will be fine, although even they are almost £100 from VW.

The bolt fell out of the bottom of my old one (how would that even happen) and basically meant that the whole engine rocked backwards and then landed on the cross member with a "DNK" noise under heavy load and a fast gearchange. It literally pulled my four-branch apart from my centre pipe once.... I almost cried.
  15. I had a "heavy duty" GSF front on my Mk2 Golf 16v, and you could literally feel the engine go up and down on the starter motor :shock: I liked it though, wasn't harsh at all when running (a little lumpy on idle maybe) and gave me peace of mind that it was doing it's job properly.

So, was that a second mortgage on the house or selling a kidney? :shock: :shock: :shock: You'd be surprised to find out that a lot of the 'consumables' are actually made by the same companies whether they a genuine VAG or OEM/Pattern, but I guess that's the same with most things in life: Paying for the label. Looks like you won't have to worry about the front end for a few years now though!

  19. Alright matey, glad you got the MC fast but a bit gutted it might not solve your problems! :( IIRC, the ABS light stays on when one or more of the sensors is malfunctioning? Might be worth popping your car up at some point and checking all 4 corners for each sensor. Don't think the car came with ABS ECU, but if someone knows what it looks like I will have a root around. Similarly on the ABS pump, although if we have it will have to check that it hasn't been bagsied by a family emmber already!
  20. Definitely concur on valve stem seals. Do you get a small puff when the engine starts? This is normally a tell-tale sign of VSS wear. Piston ring wear would show more as excessive smoke when engine under load, and also at idle if the rings are _really_ shot.
