Pete Griff's 'Rado R32 - (Not quite!) Alive at last! :D
pete_griff replied to pete_griff's topic in Members Gallery
howdy all just thought i'd share a few pics on my new engine now it's finally arrived - only done 12k :norty: :D also managed to pick up a set of milltek sports cats fro an r32 on the cheap off fleabay which i was bloody pleased about can't wait to get back and start putting it all together now :D -
that's a nice compromise for a daily driver instead of the C apparently it's quite easy to have some tail happy shenanigans with the octavia vrs's - nice colour, hope you enjoy it! still far more envious of the rado though :D
-
hows the 'running in' coming along now anyway james - been overtaken by many 1.2 novas?!? what's the word on sorting yourself with standalone?
-
it's quite normal for there to be the odd bit of smoke/strange smells etc if you have done a head gasket change - all the new gaskets bedding in with the heat etc - it's just if the burning continues that you have to worry about it... just give it a thorough check all around the exhaust to make sure nothing is touching etc (that's presuming it doesn't have a leak or the manifold isn't cracked...) if it is, then all being well i will have a good set of manifolds/downpipes available come the end of september if you can wait that long...

Hey all i'm going to be buying some VF engine mounts for my VR when i do my conversion. only things is - looking at my subframe, the rear mount has only two bolts either side, not three like on the VF mount... has anyone fitted these before and do you know if they will just go straight on... if you look in my old thread you can see some pics of my subframe - just in case i have a weird subframe or something unfortunate like that... viewtopic.php?f=23&t=62818 cheers
-
great to hear that buddy - god i'm unbelievably champing at the bit to get mine started now. really pleased to hear yours has gone so well. i don't need to ask if you are chuffed - your posts say it all - good for you
-
i'm pretty sure it will only fit into a corrado - that's certainly what it's made for anyway.... not wanting to hijack the thread or anything, but i will hopefully have a set of milltek stainless r32 manifolds for a mk4 in the next couple of days if you are after some. also got the appropriate original r32 cat to go on the end of them with only 12k's worth of gasses gone through it! drop me a PM if you are interested...

Mabey we will meet at a show or something at some point, but would like to put names to faces so might do some south shows this year  If you are refering to the pipe in the centre at the base of the manifold, its for the idle valve mate, the one on the right side is for the servo. Good luck with the conversion mate,it will be worth it in the end... oh yeah - cheers for pointing that out - looks like i was being a muppet :?

in all fairness you would have to have hit something at a pretty high f*cking speed to successfully bend a hub carrier, and i would have thought there would at least be some evidence of other damage to the car happening at some other time if that was the case... there is loads of movement available once all the bolts are loose, and as kev rightly says - you get further adjustment by loosening the 3 bolts that hold the ball joint in place. i remember as when i had my alignment done, the place had just had the latest system installed and weren't very familiar with it when they did my car - i went in and saw the full amount of adjustment with the car jacked up - it was loads, i was quite surprised actually. they were trying to say that i would have to file the holes as they couldn't make the camber correct - it was too negtive the whole time. then i pointed out that the wheel was noticably sticking out more at the top, so they must be wrong and to check the machine again. after a couple of minutes they had it sorted and now know how to use their machine properly! there really is loads of adjustment - have a look for yourself if you get the time. only thing is you have to get the camber right first, then set the car down on the wheels to do the tracking correctly after that, if i remember correctly... hope you get it all sorted anyway buddy :)

the pipe coming off the bottom of the inlet manifold is a vacuum pipe going to the brake servo if remember correctly (without looking back through all the posts to find out) - i remember because i asked about it, being curious as to it being a vacuum pipe, yet being connected to something that would be receiving forced induction (if that's what you're asking as well.....) in a nutshell james explained that being as most of the time it would still be under negative pressure then it would still work fine :)

chris great to hear your car is all sorted - really pleased for you, but not as pleased as you are by the sounds of things :) really can't wait to get back and get mine sorted now... quick question - what did you do with regards to the lambdas/manifold and are you running the twin cat setup (i know you had a manifold fabricated, but i'm interested to know if you kept the twin cat assembly and how many of the lambdas you kept/had deleted..) also (don't want to be rude or anything...) i was wondering how much it cost to have the manifold fabricated and what it's made out of i.e mild or stainless... great work anyway buddy - hope you enjoy many hours of driving it; got to have been worth the wait :)
-
hey there buddy, can't help you with the original post i'm afraid, but i can recommend a company called biggred in worcester. you send you calipers to them, they will refurb them for you to whatever standard you want, then send them back to you. i had mine done and they came up beautifully - very impressed with the results... you can find them if you just type biggred into google good luck anyway buddy
-
now now - there's no need to suffer from the corruption of forced induction!
-
fantastic news buddy - you've really got me champing at the bit now - want to get back and get mine sorted soooooo badly :D kepp us updated buddy - can't wait to see the pics once you've got it all sorted!
-
with the 4wd next year mate... sod! - can't wait to see that buddy :D judging by the time it takes you to sort most things out and wher you work, i'm guessing you'll have that done in an afternoon! :D love it!
-
i  haha - yeah you stick with your stoneage 12V - i'm sitting pretty on my 24V (once it's in and working that is... :? ) that's a brilliant price for the powder coating - lucky git! best of luck matey - i'm sure the fires of hell underneath your bonnet will soon be reignited and you'll be mobile again in the next couple of days... by the way - isn't it about time you bought a quaife for it!?!.... :D
-
- tart! loving the pics as always mate - great to see, i must admit, i'm a bit jealous of your shiny new block - very nice 8) the rest of it is looking good as well - it's a joy to put together when it's all shiny like that! - do all vr heads suffer from corrosion issues - noticed you had a tiny spot between pots 2+4, mine had a few spots when i did it, but when i initially drained it the coolant was clean as you like... a little annoying really, not that you should ever have any trouble from it, but still... do you know if the 24V heads are the same - my r32 engine when it arrives has only done 12k, so i might run a bit of flush through it for my own peace of mind, though i sense i'm perhaps being a bit anal... great pics anyway matey - everyone loves seeing build and project pics. all the best :) Pete
-
good for you buddy - just had a quick read through this thread myself for the first time. my r32 engine should hopefully have been delivered today, so come the end of september i will be going through the same joys as you and karl! i'm chickening out and getting the wiring done elsewhere as well! will be getting one of the storm conversion manifolds though, so i can do all the mechanics myself and all that i will need sorting elsewhere is the wiring. by the way i'm a huge fan of your car - it's pretty much exactly the same as mine! - same wheels, same colour, similar engines very soon, and i've even got eagle f1's on the rears (and soon to be the front!) - haha :) best of luck anyway matey - can't wait to see another conversion finished :D :D :D
-
looking very good there buddy 8) do you know if pete at dubpower makes the manifold for storm - the one that stays in two separate pipes and retains the r32 cats?... (as i said before i want to retain all four lambdas if poss) if he does what would be the chances of getting one direct from him and not storm - i.e. paying a nicer price?! glad to see your build is coming along by the way - just got to take the plunge with the wiring now! - i'm sure it won't be all that bad once you get into it.... also, i'm in no hurry, but i can pay you whenever you want for the cigarette lighter housing i was on about in your sales thread, i will need it posted anyway, so if you could drop me another pm whenever is convenient for you with your paypal address and how much you want for it posted, i'll sort the cash out for you... cheers again - keep up the good work! :) Pete
-
looking good buddy - that's great about the crank - 160k and it still comes up like that  , you've got to be happy with that. guess the engine's been looked after and that's a nice testiment to vw quality :) i must admit, i'm quite jealous of how nice the new block looks, will be lovely once it's all back together :) good luck buddy - keep up the good work
-
8) lovely looking manifold my friend, take it you are putting your 1or 2 lambdas (can't remember how many you were keeping) in the cat, then deleting the others as you said. by the way, when you said pete at dubpower makes the manifolds for storm - does he make the ones which they advertise on their website for the r32 conversions that keep the dual cat affair? if he does, it would be nice to go straight to the source and potentially save myself a quid or two... how goes the wiring now - anymore news there? good luck anyway my friend - hope to see it on the road soon :D

before you start it again, disconnet the coilpack and wind it over on the starter - watch to see if the oil pressure light goes out, or if it continues to flash for a good indicator... also how did you fit the new mocal cooler - are the hoses coming off the top or bottom of the cooler. it's possible, if they are coming off the bottom that the cooler might be be getting completely filled due to gravity (maybe...) and causing a bit of air in the oil system??? or am in talking complete bollards?... (in all honesty i'm unsure as i've never fitted a cooler before, but that could possibly be an issue. i'll be fitting a cooler to mine shortly when i fit the new engine and i'll be making sure the lines come in/out of the top, to ensure no chance of air in the system) hopefully someone with more knowledge than me could help you out there... also could the tapping be a sticky tappet? - if the car has been stationary for a while, one or two might be sticking. mine did for a while until i warmed it up on it's proper first run after doing my head gasket - then it was fine after that... god luck sorting it all anyway buddy
-
great pics buddy - cheers for the update - that block looks lovely. it's really nice to build something from new like that isn't it?! :D sorry to see the old girl stranded there - won't be long though. just think you should have more fire when you're done anyway due to actually having some compression!!! :norty: all the best mate
-
it's gone all quiet here - not like you james... or are you going to tell us all tonight that it's in and you have been driving it round for 3 days?! :D hope all is coming along well with it anyway buddy
-
thanks very much - most appreciated
