A used bonnet in the correct colour and a good clean will see that looking much better. Is it MOTd and useable?

Whats wrong with your old engine? There must be loads of rusty mk3s around to donate a block?
-
I usually get the email Friday mid day, so I'll post it up when I get it

You're wrong, it has to read all the temps the engine is capable of running at to supply the correct amount of fuel for that temp. The Bentley graph above is not linear (a straight line) its curved.

Its not that simple, it has to read correctly from something like -50 degrees to +150 degrees, the range is not linear either so the only way to truly check it is with a known good sensor heating the water and comparing the 2 as the water temp increases. There is a graph in the Bentley manual

The temp sensor was £24 with the seal from vw The old plugs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Heres my fail from earlier this year I gave the car a full service including plugs, fuel filter (not changed in my ownership), fuel pump (it was noisy) and a cts to get a pass Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oh right, I'd ignore the above then, the post was meant for us hobby mechanics to try and prevent problems with bleeding (and premature failure) after fitting. What paint did you use? In the past I've used hammerite but it chips easily
-
I'd pop the pistons out before fitting them and check for peeling chrome and rust, the chrome plate and rust will score the seals and damage them over time. If the pistons are OK (unlikely) then I'd fit a new seal kit and bleed nipple. These cars are a bugger to bleed, so I'd fit one side, bleed it until the pedal feels good with the engine running then fit the other side, that way if you have a soggy pedal you'll have an idea of which side is giving you a problem.

Coolant systems typically run between 12 - 15 PSI (the pressure stops the coolant boiling by raising its boiling point), it seen many heat cycles in 20+ years and they're fragile any way. It'll bee the plastic end caps that are leaking that surround the alloy core. Bypassing it will prove the leaking core.
-
Its a bit daunting when you start, but there's a few guides and how toos that makes the matrix repacement easier. The best thing to do is to temporarily bypass the matrix to confirm the problem using plumbers copper fittings.
-
It sounds like the heater matrix is leaking, the sweet smell is the antifreeze

A broken or damaged earth wire to lights give all sorts of odd happenings when the voltage then goes on to try and find a path to earth via other connections on nearby lamps Check the wiring to that corner of the car, check the bulb fitment to the lamps too, clean off any corrosion found and make sure the correct type of bulbs are fitted to the lamps too

Does it work manually off the button under the dash?
