    Gearbox whine

Definitely gonna try a standard/old mount (pretty sure I've got one). That will be a good indicator. Think I'll bring it back to you anyway Mart, for peace of mind. Can't fault Mart's excellent service- always willing to pick up the phone/answer emails etc + the offer to fit the bearings FOC is very kind!
  2. Is it the one I just texted you about?
  3. Shame red has to go- always liked it! Onwards and upwards though...

    Gearbox whine

Thanks Kev. Why's it whining then? Is it the mount? Mart (Hotgolf) seemed concerned when I told him.

    Gearbox whine

Yo! I've just had my gb rebuilt with a 3.68 fd. The guy left most of the bearings as he said they were fine. I also changed the gb mount for a solid rubber Golf one. There is a whine- very noticeable from 3k onwards in first gear. Barely notice it at all in 2nd and not at all in the others. Could this be due to the mount? Anything to worry about? He's offered to fit the bearings with no labour charge, but it's huge hassle to remove the box again... I don't know the history of the box I used for the rebuild, however it was very clean inside and worn parts were replaced.
  6. Have you disconnected the battery recently? Mine was really bad too, but discovered my stat was stuck ope so the car was permanantly in warm-up mode and the ecu couldn't adapt. Changed the stat and it warms properly now, allowing it to adapt after the battery has been disconnected. No vibes anymore.
  7. Dr, any idea when the whine would be most evident? I've just had my gb rebuilt with a 3.68 fd. The guy left most of the bearings as he said they were fine. I also changed the gb mount for a solid rubber Golf one. There is a whine- very noticeable from 3k onwards in first gear. Barely notice it at all in 2nd and not at all in the others. Anything to worry about? He's offered to fit the bearings with no labour charge, but it's huge hassle to remove the box again... Re: Jay's poly mounts- bargain and just as good as VT mounts IMHO. The extra vibration is negligable. £75 for a standard mount is crazy! They were £35 last year. A VT is the same price!
  8. Phew! Always satisfying to find out what's causing the prob. Easy enough fix too! 8)
  9. Think Megs have just launched a similar product. Wouldn't trust it to actually wash the car.
  10. There is no pollen filter. That's the correct place if you want to fit one though. Never bothered myself...

  12. Gutting :( At least you weren't to far from home- good excuse now for some gb tinkering too ;)
  13. I'd be up for lunch at the Air Balloon. Or a curry somewhere? Can't drive at this moment in time (just had operation on my leg), will be able to drive again by Sunday, but don't think I could do much of a cruise.
  14. Thank goodness for that! Wheels make such a huge difference- looking superb Baz 8)

  16. GSF are vastly inferior in quality. You'll be doing them again in a couple of years. Not sure on price- not cheap though :(
  17. Right hand side as you look at the engine from the front? That'll be the 'hydro' gearbox mount. Needs changing. Golf 2/3 solid mount is better and fits straight in ;)
  18. Def get OEM ones from VW. You get what you pay for, especially with rubber parts. Personally I wouldn't go poly with these. Easier to fit, but make the ride very harsh and you'll lose the passive rear steering. You don't need the special tool, but they'll need a hydraulic press to get them in. Here's the special tool method: http://wiki.the-corrado.net/rear_axle_bushes.html
