1. They look really good mate. I'm currently refurbing my 19's for my daily. Will hopefully be painting them some day next week. Has the firm painted inside the wheel nut holes where the nut seats? I can't decide if its going to be best to mask that area off or just paint it. What have the pros done? Cheers Mark
2. Nice to see you have made a start mate. Looks like you've got a fair bit of work ahead. Keep the thread going.
3. Nice buy Tom, yet again I think this is going to be another good read. Rado and a Golf, good choice on cars. Although I'm going to be biased on that front. Nice to see a car being given some TLC after years of neglect. I do think though that not washing it for 6 months isn't neglect, the longest I've left mine is about 2 years!:bonk: Although it has never wanted for parts or service. Looking forward to seeing what you do in the coming weeks.
4. Very nice Dave, again more great work being done. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
5. Parked mine up tonight ready for the long sleep over winter. Going to give it a wash and a good coat of wax over the next couple of weeks and cover it up. :( Roll on March
6. Looking good Dave.... I do some awesome work :thumb right:
7. I can get lower than you Wendy. MAF 2, covered a little over 1040 miles. And some (300 miles or so) was motorway driving at a steady 60 mph, the rest is a 20 minute drive to and from work and the odd trip to Dave 16v's. MPG is an impressive 23.4!
8. Got round to watching 'Skyline' last night, that's a couple of hours of my life that I'm not getting back. Ended up being a cross between cloverfield, the matrix and Independence Day. Poor film to be honest, and I'll watch most crap..... 3/10
9. Which subframe are you after? VR6 or 16v/8v?
10. Yet again another great day out. The weather was perfect, and so where the cars. Nice to see some new faces along with the regulars. Well done Judith on another win. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a photo as you where driving up as some inconsiderate sod wandered right in front of me. Looking good! 13. Been a while since I updated this. So here's a few new bits. I was loaned a machine polisher a few weeks ago so thought that I'd give the car a good going over as it hadn't had a good clean so far this year. So the car was washed and then shipped to my sisters where I had the use of her garage for a few weeks. So first it had a good couple of hours under a clay bar, did top to bottom twice for good measure and was surprised at the amount of crap it shifted. I then masked off at the plastic with some 3M detail tape, I was surprised how much abuse it would take from the polisher. I gave it the once over with each of the 3, 3M cutting compounds and then dragged it out the garage and gave it a wash to clear off all the polish, which had gone everywhere! I think I was using a little too much compound. So after a good wash and dry, I rolled it back into the garage and got the polish out. 1 coat of Meguires step 2, Deep Gloss Carnauba polish, applied this by hand using a form applicator and allowed to dry before buffing off with microfibres. After the Meguires I applied a coat of Autoglym SRP, and then went to work on the plastics. The car was then subjected to a coat of Meguiars NXT generation wax. By which time I was wishing I'd never had started. :bonk: The wheels came off and where also subjected to polish and lacqure before going back on. Here is a pic of the car at Shelsey Walsh National Day :shades:, I must admit,I was pretty chuffed with the result. Espically when someone asked me when I'd had it resprayed! A surprising reward for all the effort. Show and shine winner!! Still can't believe it.. Well that was the other week, since then I've been and ordered loads of new nuts and bolts for the front end as I have a spare blasted and powder coated ready to replace the one currently on. The picture shows only some of the bits so far. And tonight my new TT aero wipers and arms arrived... A bargain at £43 posted! So they where fitted straight away. More updates will follow when the front end is swapped in the next couple of weeks.
14. I'm pretty sure myself, Dave and Tom will meet up at Tibshelf a little earlier and convoy up to meet you at the right time. I'll double check, but I'm sure we'll be there.
15. That's turned out really nice Dave. Is that the 2B side grained up, or is that the one which was done the wrong way round?
16. Good point about the lowered suspension, removing the back box for the exhaust makes the job lots easier. Another good point is to take photos, lots of photos, if you've got to take it apart its always handy to have a reference when it comes to putting it back together.
17. I've done this to my 16v and a mates VR6. There are 2 flexi line for the brake lines to the rear beam. I have seen people use mole grips to pinch the flexi to stop air getting into the lines, not sure how good this is for the lines to be honest. It may also be handy to get a proper brake pipe spanner to help undo the fittings as they are easy to round off. The best advice is to get the car up in the air on axle stands, disconnect the brake lines to the beam and undo the bolt at the bottom on the rear shock. This should allow the beam to swing down, and should give you better access to the 6 bolts which mount the beam to the car. When you come to drop the rear beam out, put a trolley jack in the centre of the beam and take some of the weight, undo your bolts and lower it down, it should just slide out. If you are doing it on your own and you have left the brakes, calipers, stub axle etc.. on then it will be bloody heavy! Even without all that stuff on, it still weighs a bit. Hope this helps Mark The hard lines meet the flexi's at these brackets, the pic's show the beam upside down. I can't remember if the VR6 had a compensator (or if its just the 16/8v's) located on the passenger side, that's bolted to an arm which runs of the rear beam and is a B*tch to undo, plus makes getting the beam out interesting.
18. Thanks for that. Must remember to take photo's when I'm taking stuff apart next time!
19. Hi All, Could someone please help me out. I need a photo of the bushes of the front cross member showing which way round they are fitted. I stripped my spare cross member and powder coated it and have now forgotten which way round they go as its been a while since I did it. I've had a look on Wagenstad but the image isn't very clear. I've got an idea but I want to be 100% sure before I put them back in. Thanks in advance Mark
20. I understand that looking for a garage is difficult, I think that I've been really lucky, a mate of mine is a mechanic, very fastidious, and picky on what he does. His Dad owns the business and as I've been going there since I was able to drive (15 years now) we get on well and he knows I'm picky about my car. Another bonus is that there are only 3 employees, and each of them has, or is involved with cars or motorbikes as a hobby. Plus they are really cheap, old parts are kept to show you, and I get a good discount. :)
21. There is a wiki i think which shows how to do it, it even shows the VW special tool. I, being a cheap skate, made my own special tool, and you can get the old bushes out in about 10-20 minutes. Unfortunately it's crap when putting them back in :(
22. Well its a good job it'll be cold in the morning when we set off. Phone the AA when you get there and pre-book them to take you home! Problem sorted
23. Found it. Not a mini, but a Rover Metro. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/485692.stm
24. Didn't he crash it not long after he brought it? Seem to remember reading somewhere that he'd had a minor collision with a mini of all cars some years ago.
