Corrado MOT Fail - excessive play in steering column... PASSED
Jim replied to Jim's topic in Drivetrain
I ran my previous Corrado with the fixed height column and liked it - it was the perfect height for me and felt really direct. But not all the parts are available I don't think which makes doing that swap not an option :( -
Help :( My Corrado, having sailed through all MOT's with no problems over the last few years this failed on a number plate lighbulb (sigh) and excessive play in the steering column. Having owned several Corrado's, I've never found it to be any worse than any other Corrado i've owned so I think this is the garage just trying to find something wrong. Has anyone's Corrado ever failed on this, and if so, what was the fix? Going to pick up the car later on and going to have a damn good look at it myself before probably getting it retested somewhere else as I'm just not convinced there's anything "dangerously" wrong.

So... how about we try and get a bunch of us together and go down to the next VW/Audi Driver Track Day? There were enough folks who seemed really keen on the day for a session - maybe we could get a Corrado one put on at the next event?

25th Anniversary National Day - Castle Combe
Jim replied to vornwend's topic in Event Announcements & Discussion
Hey - you got one of mine! Extra points :D -
Or you can buy an entire G-Lader from VW Classic Parts.. (£1,305)
-
If the fuel filter is gummed up / blocked then the pump will be having to work harder to push the fuel through the system which could be causing the intermittent whining you're getting!
-
Speak to Stealth Racing. They do a kit for Corrado VR6's :) Not sure if you can buy the kit and install it yourself, or whether they only sell it as a complete package.
-
Someone needs to ask the eBay question 'Is this the same car you paid £2,500 for a few weeks ago?'
-
Have you changed the fuel filter in the last few years? Might be worth doing that before spending money on a new pump!
-
Wonder if enough people were interested, Classic Parts would kick off a run of them?

It's ok mate - Micky Fletch's post a few above yours has the email address in :) -
Really annoyed as I didn't come up to say hello, and have a poke around your car. It's absolute perfection and the CH's really are the perfect wheel on the Corrado. Next show I promise I'll come have a look around! :)

Does anyone happen to have email details for the photographer? I didn't queue on the day to look at my pictures as it was taking forever but would be interested to see what pics he got of my car! -
Welcome to the forum!

You need to get the pink Passat Haynes manual - this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Haynes-Manual-for-VW-Passat-88-to-91-1781cc-1984cc-/141014792972?pt=UK_CarParts_Vehicles_Manuals_Litterature_ET&hash=item20d522fb0c :) Hope that helps.

Yeah - when we went out on the parade lap, we did actually have the entire of Castle Combe circuit covered in Corrado's.. I was the first car behind the pace car, and we caught up with the last car and had to keep slowing down :) -

A terrific day out :) Had a great evening with several friends from the club in nearby Trowbridge last night, before heading to Castle Combe yesterday morning. Really enjoyed it all, and great to see so many folks there. Well done to the folks who organised the event (Judith, Eric, and Ron for doing a great job with merchandise today) and well done to Chris and Dave for very well deserved trophy wins with their stunning Corrado's! -
The MK1 Scirocco is now apparently starting to get quite valuable purely because they all rotted away and finding a good one is nigh on impossible! Not so sure the MK2 will ever be looked upon the same way though..
-
No no... not taking it personally mate :) Sorry if my response came across that way.

Speaking from my own experience of someone who's not putting the money into their car that they should.. There's a difference between being able to afford to spend the money on the upkeep and it, frankly, just not being worth it. I could afford to hose 3k into mine on a respray, and another 4k on an engine rebuild making my VR sound a little less agricultural, but what's the point when the car has 190k on it and wouldn't even be worth what I spent on the respray let alone the other work? :(
-
For that money I'd of wanted them to refurbish the alloy wheels to the correct / original finish. The Estorils don't really work in a flat matt colour like that :(

Quite often it's not about what was most popular in the day.. as an example, using a friend of mine who is a collector of vintage He-Man toys (of all things). He's got a gigantic collection worth into five figures easily. Of course the main & most well known characters are valuable, but it's also the rarities / oddities and just the items that they simply didn't sell as much that have become the most valuable. The same is true across other areas of collecting. I think the car will ultimately appeal to those folks who yearned to own one back when they came out but couldn't because of families, etc. And you might say that a Corrado isn't much of a car to aspire too, but then not everyone can afford to buy & run a classic Porsche. I think I posted a year or two back when I took my Corrado up to a small classic car festival up where my parents live. My dad took his lovely 1967 Daimler V8 and I parked alongside him in the Corrado. Hand on heart I had more folks come up to ask me about the Corrado than my dad did about his car - and to reminisce about owning one or a friend they knew who owned one.. people were really enthusiastic about it. I'd like to think that sort of thing bodes well for those with great examples tucked away in garages - e.g. ChrisL, Chris Langdon, Kip & Judith, Goldie, etc :)

I think the Corrado has everything going for it, and that will eventually lead to higher values.. * It was very well regarded by the motoring press.. still has a certain aura about it to folks in their mid 30's. * It wasn't too popular so there weren't that many sold compared to Golfs, Scirocco's, etc.. * LOTS have been crashed and broken for spares meaning numbers are dwindling I think in time, it will start to command a decent premium in the used car market. Certainly doesn't hurt every time you get features such as the one in the Practical Classics magazine either.
