Well the corrado is officially dead, i say officially because shes been sat round the back of my house for 3 weeks with me thinking it would be something simple, as the engine was getting spark and i knew the timing was right, i figured it was a fuelling issue, alas a compression test today revealed some woeful figures with every cylinder seriously down when tested. at least i can now rebuild her as i always thought the engine let the rest of the car down. anyway a very nice R.A.C man (possibly the nicest R.A.C amn in the service) came to my house and gave a betty what i suspect is possibly her last journey on a public road for some time, down to my mum and dads garage. I can't help feeling oddly gutted and at the same time quite cheerful in an 'every cloud has a silver lining' sort of way. So i am now in need of some form of transport, quite tempted by a mk2 scirocco as there (relatively) simple and (relatively) cheap, can't help but want another C though and a goodun comes up locally i may well be tempted. Tom :(

thanks everyone, its being tuned and have few new parts to fit on sunday so will check everything. really hope its something cheap... cheers Tom

ok so it started about a month ago, the c started to lose power, acceleration was down and fuel consumption has gone through the roof, not to mention it now idles at 750 rpm as opposed to the previous 1050rpm. at first i thought something had perhaps been knocked out of adjustment and foolishly, i put up with it. however 2 weeks ago i filled the tank and put some redex through the system(in case it was a blockage, or some carbon build up etc). the c did'nt get any better, so i had a family friend (whos a mechanic) check the car over, he checked the timing, spark plugs etc and he thought that the problem may lay with the metering head and that it would be a good idea to clean the metering head and throttle body. so thats what i did this weekend, now after i had cleaned them and put them back on the c, the car does run slightly better but still not as good as it used to, as in its still very sluggish and quite slow. the car was tuned prior to its last mot (feb), and the tuner commented that the engine, despite its miles was in very good condition. i have also checked the isv over the last weekend and it appears to be operating fine. I'm getting really stuck now, the car is due a service(i'll be ordering the bits this week) but i can't see how new plugs and fresh oil will fix this! I need the car for work, i'm quickly running out of ideas(the most appealing is to replace it and do some work on it(theres an ever growing list of other jobs) but i digress...) Help!!! Tom

holeinmk1 replied to holeinmk1's topic in Drivetrain
Yeah, thats what i thought, just i've put the bbs back on the offending hub and the brakes have'nt heated up once since? its almost as if the problem has cured itself? Maybe i have a 21st century Christine? -
sticky brake caliper and replacing 16v calipers with something bigger...

discs and pads were new a few months back and i've not been using the car much so difficult to tell about wear, i don't remember there being much wear though when i changed them. I'll be replacing the hoses at the same time(may as well). Is it possible that a buckled wheel could have caused the brakes to heat up. i have refitted my bbs on the offending hub/caliper and not had any problems today? Tom -
Its gonna have to be a weekend mate or maybe a week night, just started a new job. I do need to strip the door that the glass is in, probably won't get chance to do it until the weekend now. Could definetly sort something out for next week/weekend though if thats any good for you?

sticky brake caliper and replacing 16v calipers with something bigger...

Will calipers from a mk3 golf vr6 fit? or do they have to be specifically be from a corrado vr6? Cheers -
Hi Si, been meaning to get in touch with you, I got you a drivers side piece of glass to replace the one on the car. Tom
-
LP3G I think,(i'll have to check) but it is definitely diamind silver, used to have a mk1 golf GX in the same colour, still had a touch up kit which has proved useful! BBS first, then then sort the stance out methinks. Tom
-
always thought it was satin silver but we parked it next to another satin silver at a show and the colour on mine was darker and was told it was diamond silver.

The BBS shall soon be back in there rightful place, picking up the previously welded alloy on monday and then its off for a spit and polish on all 4. Tom ---------- Post added at 08:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:09 PM ---------- oh and to top it all, i've now got a f*&%ing puncture, great big p£$!ing b&*$ard 3" screw stuck right in the centre of my tyre! Aaaargh! NOT HAPPY. :(

Well well, thanks guys. thats cleared that up! Cheers, Tom -
BBS are being sorted, the 4 pieces of jap crap currently residing on my corrado will soon be back on ebay(or in the bin...). Honestly these have been the worst set of alloy wheels i have ever had the displeasure to own. I want MY wheels back! Tom

My n/s front caliper keeps sticking, and running hot, the entire alloy wheel becomes extremely hot(yes, i burnt my fingers :bonk:), i have already stripped the caliper and carrier off, cleaned and regreased the essential bits, and the problem returned. Trouble is, i had planned on replacing the standard calipers with either g60 or vr6 calipers, so i don;t really want to rebuild the standard ones just to replace them a few months down the line. I'm guessing that g60 or vr6 calipers are'nt just a straight forward swap for the 16v and i'd need some kind of adaptor? Help please! Tom

does anyone have a corrado that doesnt break?

Well put that man! :) Tom -
Tyres swapped over to the Rota's, Don't think the Rota's have anything on the BBS personally, maybe that'll change when i repaint the centre's/get some spacers to get them sitting right, but right now think they make the car chavvy. But they're at least better than some wheels i was looking at. Anyway, would appreciate you guys n gals comments on them(i know the car looks high in the pics, the wheels sit about 1-2mm off the coily strut, any lower at the back and they would catch on the adjusters, so spacers are desperate really!) Heres a pic of the offending weld on the BBS, the good news is the other 3 will be an easy fix, but this one i'm not so sure it will, and how long before the potholes ruin the weld again? :( Also found on the inside of the BBS, the original price tag of 1,825 euros(back in 2001,i think) Tom
-
oh dear, just seen when this was first posted :confused4:

Congrats on your purchase, any piccies? Tom

I used to wash it every week or so, but got a bit lazy over winter(far to cold to be standing outside polishing). I always wax and polish and a bit of detailing, so its never just a 'wash'. That said has'nt had a wash in a while as its sat in my garage and has only been taken out on nice dry sunny days so far, so its still pretty clean from last time(about 2 months ago!), although i think a good wash is overdue as the interior is filthy too. I do find a good detailing session very relaxing(clean car clean mind... oh now THAT is sad) Tom
-
Oh no, Sorry mate, hope you get another one soon, it looks like it was a nice one too(and hope your partners ok too) Tom

We bought our Corrado as a replacement for an A4!, we found that the Corrado offered everyone(littl'un included!) a lot more room, agreed getting the car seat in and out can be a sod at times(especially as littl'un loves going in the front), Plus its sooooo much cooler than an audi. Don't break break it if its a good'un, if you can't afford to run it, put it on stands and throw a cover over it if you've got room to keep it and just forget about it. Tom

I agree, its a mess, an immaculate mess, but a mess nonetheless. however, lose the 'kit and it could be rather nice for someone. How do those reiger rear spoilers work then, do they replace the existing one, or do they sit on top of it? Does the auto spoiler still work if so? Tom -

holeinmk1 replied to Danny Ess's topic in General Car Chat
I've only had mine a year, and i was worried about the same thing(reliability) when i bought mine as the car it was replacing was much newer(although that had broken down twice already!). It has admittedly let me down once, my heater matrix failed, hot coolant everywhere, not very nice, but its been otherwise very reliable, i was using mine everyday until a recent attempted break in, and even in the snow it was excellent. Honestly can't think of another car i'd rather have now(well, maybe another mk1 one day....). But seriously this ones a keeper. I love the fact that the chances of seeing another knocking about are pretty slim(in fact, excluding meets/shows i've seen 4 others out and about since i bought mine!), whereas i see mk2's alot, and even the odd mk1. I'm in Bury, so not a million miles from you if you want to take a look. Tom -
Cheers Simon, Hoping to get the toyo's popped over from the BBS asap, then at least the C won't be on that stoopid space saver and i won't catch my front any more!

Looks very nice! Good to see another silver C on the roads. keep up the good work! I agree the welsh roads are awesome, i've got family Near Llanidloes, always look forward to the drive over! Tom
