Been looking at a chip (possibly with one of Alpina's BB throttle bodies) as my next mod & wondering about where to get a remap done. I've used AmD before & they were great, but Oxford is light years away from me! Where is Geoff based now Kev, is he still in Oxford? cheers, Robbo

Just popped back up to the garage in my lunch break to check on my motor. She sounds so silky smooth with the new coil pack on! Definitely purring on all 6 now! can't wait to take her out for a blast tonight. Cheers, Robbo

Hi Kev, my car's still in the garage waiting for a flush out & new oil (and now a new coil pack! I got a Beru one from ECP @ £138, it was the only one they had in stock). I'm really hoping I can tell a difference when I get it back, after spending the best part of a grand on it! When I went round this morning we fired it up to trace the missfiring problem & it did sound much much quieter, even with the bonnet up & only running on four cylinders! I may be getting confused with the tensioner terminology, I think I meant the tensioners, not the guide rails - the curved jobbie like a brake shoe? I keep referring to the hydraulic bolt thingy as the tensioner. Although I did have all the guide rails replaced as well, they were only a couple of quid each. I'll keep you posted. Cheers, Robbo

Just want to give a bit of praise for the parts dept at my local VW main dealer (JCT600 in Wakefield). They've given me a lot great service & advice recently. Probably helps that the main guy there has a Mk1 cabriolet, so he's a bit of an enthusiast too. Cheers, Robbo

Hi all, just back from a week in sunny Spain. My VR was in for the full monty while I was away - recon head, timing chains, tensioners, clutch. I went to collect it this morning to be greeted by the dreaded "we've got a couple of problems..." It seems all the work it went in for went ok, apart from a spurious hole in the new head I got which had to be plugged (it was a Golf head so maybe there are minor differences after all?). The main problem is that now it's all back together, it's misfiring on 2 cylinders! traced the problem to 2 of the outputs on the coil pack (no spark). I'm pretty sure then, that the coilpack is goosed, is there anything else that could cause the coilpack not to spark on all six? That's the bad news, the good news is that the block was ok, only very minimal bore wear & no messed up piston crowns, :D (I've seen some nasty pics on here somewhere). A word of warning to any VR owners who haven't had their chains/tensioners done, both tensioner guide rails on mine disintegrated when they were removed  (It's done 101k btw) Cheers guys, Robbo

So you were the git who outbid me?! :( Only joking, congrats mate & welcome to the forum. Cheers, Robbo -
Just trying to be helpful mate, you asked about the camshaft alignment tool. Apologies for the additional waffle  Cheers, Robbo

Kev, I tried to get the newer upper tensioner & bolt as you recommended, but my local stealer said they were on back-order so would take about 10 days. Had to get the original ones as I need them for the weekend (twice as expensive too!). I also tried to get the camshaft alignment tool, but the parts guy said they didn't supply tools, I'd have to go to Sykes-Pickavant or Snapon for it! Cheers, Robbo

I've seen those TBs on Ebay, but I thought they were just 2.8 ones enlarged to 2.9 spec? Robbo
-
Cheers Kev, I did go for the LUK clutch as it was a couple of quid cheaper anyway. The later parts you're recommending, is that a revised guide rail or a different chain? & are these a straight replacement? Tappets are already done, I have a fully reconditioned head waiting to go on (cleaned & skimmed, new tappets, valves, guides & oil seals), just need to swap the cams over. I'm off to sunny Spain on Saturday so I'm leaving it with someone to be done while I try & relax! I'll let you know what it's like when I get it back, hopefully It'll be as good as yours Kev! ... Schrick next on the shopping list! Cheers, Robbo

Ok just ordered all the bits - I ended up getting everything bar the chains, clutch & oil filter from the local stealer: headset & bolts £200!, tensioners, guide rails: £58!... lawks-a-lordy! Chains from GSF: £40ish (Febi, I think), Clutch also GSF: £80 (LUK/Sachs)... this ain't going to be a cheap job! Never mind, it'll all be worth it (I keep telling myself). Just need the aux belt & tensioner from Phat now  Cheers, Robbo

Cheers Guys, I guess I'll leave the cheapo one's alone. Don't suppose anyone has ECP/GSF part numbers for chain tensioners/guide rails? They're both saying they don't stock such parts but I'm sure I've seen (non-VW) part numbers for them somewhere. Cheers once again, Robbo
-
Hi all, I'm having a recon head fitted next week & have been phoning round for prices on all the bits required. A head gasket set from GSF (Ehlring) is about half the price of VW! as are head bolts. Question is, should I really pay the extra & get genuine VW items? Cheers, Robbo

Mine are 6 spoke 225 TT wheels, I wanted polished comps, but they tend to go for silly money (£500 - £600), whereas I got these for £150! Someone has posted a pic of a C with Competition somewhere on here. Cheers, Robbo

Polished tensioners with new bearing fitted and SS bolt(VR6)
Robbo149 replied to PhatVR6's topic in Engine Bay
Hi Phat, If I send you a cheque, any chance you could get a tensioner & belt to me by Friday?... pleeeeese. I'm taking my motor in on Friday for recon head, chains etc. PM me if we can sort something out. Cheers, Robbo -
Have to agree with Phat there. low mileage Storm prices are just reeediculous. If I were to do the Corrado buying thing again (knowing what I know now about the VR6 engine), I'd look for a dirt cheap minter with good spec & high miles, and then spend the 3 or 4 grand I saved on an engine rebuild or 3.1 transplant, Schrick, etc.... my 2p. Cheers, Robbo
-
Try Lenso, Ace or Brock. They do some similar styles. HTH, Robbo

Phat - yeah I'm having the chains & clutch done along with the recon head, which was why I was considering a lightened flywheel. Kev, I was just in dreamland for a moment there! Top of my list of mods was going to be a pair of Schrick cams, but £500 is a lot of extra cash, & coz of the kind of driving I do (mainly stop/start town driving), I wasn't sure I'd get any benefit over stock cams. Also would adding cams mean I'd also have to upgrade springs & lifters? Now a VSR... that's a different matter, mmmm... there's a s/h one on Ebay at the mo'. If the block turns out to be fubar, then the 3.1 might become a 'neccessity'... (honestly dearest!). Would this mean additional 'knock-on effect' mods being needed? Cheers, Robbo
-
General consensus is that this is a good mod then?! Thanks for the response fellas, I'm trying to decide what mods (if any) to add in whilst my engine's gonna be in bits. I'd love to do everything, (3.1 block, racing pistons, Schrick cams, flowed head, VSR, flywheel, supercharger, etc, etc.... but money don't grow on trees! All advice/comments welcome. Cheers, Robbo

Been doing a bit of reading up on VW Vortex, and a lot of those guys accross the pond recommend adding a lightened flywheel whilst doing timing chains/clutch etc. Where can they be had?, how much? & what are the benefits? Another quickie: the recon head I'm getting is a Golf one, will I need to swap the cams? as I understand the 2.8 cams are a slightly different profile. Cheers, Robbo
-
Another quick question about my head swap - the recon head I'm getting done is a Golf one. The casting numbers match up, but will I have to swap the cams over ?, as I undersatand the 2.9 cams have a slightly different profile. What would be the effect of fitting the head with 2.8 cams in ? Cheers, Robbo
-
Kev, I'll deffo check out the bores while the head's off (with my fingers crossed!) Although I have had a compression test & thet came out ok. Just been on the phone to the guy who's doing the recon head for me, and the price is now £225 ! plus I get to keep my old head & sell it !... bonus! Robbo
-
Cheers Supercharged, just ordered one - £55 + vat. A bit cheaper than the stealer! Cheers, Robbo

Where's the cheapest place to get a new foglamp for my '93 VR6 ? Regards, Robbo
