Sorry, forgot to mention - it does stop when I switch the ignition off & no Phat, the washer only squirts when I hold the stalk down, as normal. Cheers, Robbo

It was drizzling a bit this morning on the way to work so I had the wipers on, as you do, only the rear wiper wouldn't turn off! I also noticed that there was no pause between sweeps (it used to be about 5 secs). Anyone else had this? Is it likely to be a fault with the stalk or maybe a relay? Cheers, Robbo

I looked into these wheels for my VR & apparently you do need 3-5mm spacers on the rear to allow for the dished centre of the Comps. I ended up getting 6 spoke 225 alloys instead, which don't need any spacers. If the tyres that came with them are 225/45's, you'll need to ditch these too for 205 or 215 40's. HTH Robbo

The recon head (with cams) I got was from a Golf, but I had my original '93 2.9 cams put back in, so I guess my exhaust cam won't have the sender wheel then? Looks like it's either the CPS (again!), or the MAF. Mmmmm... £30 versus £200... place your bets please! I've just been out to see a mate with Bosch diagnostic gear at his garage, so he's gonna try & fit it in tonight. Cheers, Robbo

Yeah, symptoms are as you describe Kev, I wouldn't say it drives like crap though! definitely feels much tighter with the recon head (& no more blue smoke). hesitancy seems to be mainly when re-applying throttle immediately after lifting off. Unplugging the MAF definitely makes a difference, so I doubt it's that. My Porter manual shows a sender wheel attached to the cam sprocket, & there was one on the cam that came with the recon head... plastic I think, possibly with a magnet inside??? I'll try & get it on VAG-COM as soon as I can I think. Cheers, Robbo

It was actually the sender wheel I was referring to, which is attached to the camshaft sprocket, not the cps itself. Cheers anyway, Robbo

Hi all, I've still got a couple of minor problems to sort after having a head rebuild/chains/etc done on my VR. It's now running on all six after replacing the coil pack & leads, but I'm now getting a flat spot/hesitancy when applying the throttle (worse if doing it after overrun). I had exactly the same symptoms when I first got the car & tracked it down to a faulty CPS. As this was only replaced about 6 months ago, I'm a bit sceptical that it's knackered again! (unless it was damaged during the head rebuild of course!). So, just a couple of questions- Has anyone known the CPS sender wheel be faulty? Is it possible to fit the sender wheel wrongly? Can the sender wheel be accessed without removing the manifold & rocker cover, just the cam sprocket cover? and does the sprocket bolt need to be removed? And finally, are there any other sensors that could give the same symptoms? Unfortunately I don't have access to diagnostic gear at the moment. Thanks guys, Robbo

Cheers Bobby, I think I'd rather have the ride on the soft side as I've already got 205/40 tyres stretched over 7 1/2 x 17 TT rims. I only want to drop about 30 or 40 mm so there shouldn't be any clearance probs. Robbo

Hi all, I've been looking for some budget springs for my VR for a 30 - 40mm drop until I can afford coilovers. I was going to get some Terra ones from GSF as I've had these before & the ride was pretty good, but GSF don't list them any more, instead they have Ventura ones which are also 'Bilstien approved'. Has anybody tried these? Are they any good ? Also, has anybody tried Venom's budget suspension, or G-Max ? Cheers, Robbo

Rpmayne, you have my sympathy! I think I got off lightly with mine at about £800. Thankfully the bottom end was ok. Chin up, Robbo

Yeah that's right dazzy, my local dealer told me they aren't allowed to sell tools. I wanted a cam alignment tool & they couldn't get me one. Could maybe try a couple of others near me. Can they be bought direct from Hazet? Cheers, Robbo
-
Hi, anyone know where I can get one & how much? Cheers, Robbo

Me again, I've now had a chance to have a good poke around & I've found the culprit - checked all the leads & no.3 has a humongous split down the rubber shoulder just above the metal end! It was arcing across to the head. I've wrapped it with some insulting tape as a temporary fix. Guess I'll be on the phone in the morning to C & R to order a set of Blue Igniters. Oh well, what's another £80 ?! Cheers, Robbo

Just a thought, but could the missfiring & spluttering be an ECU problem? I think I must have my expensive problem head on! Cheers, Robbo
-
Well, I'm back from my lunch break & the good news is there must have been an airlock as I've topped up the coolant (it took about 1 1/2 litres), & it's stayed where it should. I took the car for a spin to make sure it was up to normal operating temp & oil & coolant temps seemed ok, no warning light now. Checked the oil too (on the dipstick & the filler cap) & that looked clean & fresh. Bad news is it's still missfiring/spluttering under load. Had it running for a while with the bonnet up & I can defintely hear something sparking/shorting when I rev it. It's had a new coil pack on, so a dodgy lead?!! Cheers, Robbo

I didn't spend that getting mine done, but I'm paying the price now, with more problems to sort. All in I think I've spent about £800, but I have used genuine VAG parts & I got a new recon head aswell rather than getting mine fettled, so I should get a bit of cash back on that. Cheers, Robbo

Go to Stealth for their complete head rebuild/timing chains/tensioners/clutch package @ £1300. You can get it done cheaper but may not get the job done properly, as I'm just finding out!!! Cheers, Robbo
-
Yeah that's what I thought, although I didn't notice when the coolant warning light came on or how high the temp gauge got! Andy - I don't know whether they tset drove it or not, but I'll certainly be finding out. I would have thought it would be essential after such major work! Cheers, Robbo
-
Cheers Paul, that's what I'll be doing in my lunch break then! Just hope the coolant's not dissapearing internally somewhere! Robbo
-
It wasn't spluttering at first, just felt sluggish. By the time it started & I noticed the coolant light flashing (didn't notice if this was flashing from the off  ), I was just about at work so I didn't notice what the temp gauge got up to either, sorry. I know... I'm a numpty. Phoned the garage a had words as you said Phat. Mechanic reckoned it was probably an airlock & the temp sensor readings would have messed up the fuelling causing the spluttering. He said to fill it up & take it back for them to check, so that's the next step. Cheers guys, Robbo :(
-
Would this lack of coolant cause the spluttering & misfiring I experienced? Cheers, Robbo
-
Oh bugger!!! Just been out for a quick check & the expansion tank is completely dry! can't spot any leaks anywhere. I can hear the aux water pump running when the ignition is on & it sounds a bit gurgly so I guess there's little or no coolant in  What damage could this have done? as someone's gonna pay for this :x Robbo
-
The coolant & oil probably won't have got up to full temp as the drive to work is only about 2 miles. I have to confess I haven't checked the coolant  Will do that now, & check for anything obvious like any HT leads off. Robbo

Just picked my VR up this morning from local garage who have fitted a recon head, new chains, tensioners, clutch (& new coil pack). Driving to work it felt a bit sluggish & I noticed the coolant warning light flashing, then as the engine got warmed up it started spluttering & misfiring really badly, it's basically undriveable! Obviously, I'm taking it back tonight, but anybody got any clues as to what's wrong?!! Needless to say I'm really pee'd off. Cheers, Robbo
-
Yeah, I wouldn't bother with an "off the shelf" chip. As you say all engines are different & need a custom remap (especially with a BB TB). Robbo
