  1. Oh... I forgot to mention rear axle bushes, shocks, wishbone bushes, brakes, exhaust, new foglight, alloys, tyres, M3 rear lights, Momo wheel, etc, etc,.... Robbo
  2. Too right Jim... I was quite giddy spending bits & bobs on my C when I first got it, I'm now up to nearly 2 grand, & I haven't had it a year yet! Half of that went on the usual VR6 overhaul - recon head, timing chains & tensioners, clutch. But then other stuff started going wrong! I've since had a new coil pack, plugs, leads & I'm currently replacing most of the cooling system! I wish I could have spent all that on mods! Cheers, Robbo
  3. OK... I think I'm gradually narrowing things down. I replaced the belt tensioner this weekend as I was getting a squealing noise from this area on cold startups, but it's still doing it. I'm now thinking it's the water pump that's shafted. So here's my theory, let me know if you guys think this sounds feasible: The water pumps gone kaput, resulting in overheating and wrecking 1 or more of the temp sensors... possible? Cheers, Robbo
  4. I did a bit of reading up in my Russek manual & I guess I'll leave the water pump for now!!! Done the belt & tensioner today (cheers Phat). Sensors next... Robbo
  5. Hi guys, I'm still trying to get to the bottom of my electrical / cooling problems & I'm a bit confused about the 3 temp sensors in the thermostat housing. The Russek manual only shows 2 (plus a blank plug), & refers to them as 'temp sender (run-on)' - the yellow 4 pin jobbie, & 'temp sender (coolant) - the black 2 pin one. The Porter manual has all three (including the middle blue one), but says that the yellow one controls the run-on water pump, the fan run-on & the temp gauge! I believe it refers to the black one as a 'fan thermo switch'. Can anyone give me a definitive description of what each one does? Also what symptoms to expect if each of the three were faulty. (would any show up on VAG-COM?) Thanks in advance, Robbo
  6. Try Gwent VW. I got my M3 style FK's from them for £159. Cheers, Robbo
  7. Hi all, In my continued effort to build myself a new car by replacing all the parts!, I'm now looking at replacing some of the cooling system - Water pump (plus belt & tensioner at the same time), thermostat housing & the coolant sensors, & maybe some of the hoses as required. Are these simple DIY jobs? Do I need any special tools etc? Cheers, Robbo
  8. Another update - this morning the temp gauge did it's usual, shooting up to max & warning light flashing, no oil warning light today though :? Just been out to local dealer at lunchtime to order a new cps (no stock, on it's way from Germany... bugger!). Anyway, on the way back to work the temp gauge suddenly dropped to the bottom! but the warning light was still flashing. Any more clues?! Cheers, Robbo
  9. Good point Phat, I'll have a look at the fuseboard, didn't notice any leaks when I changed the wiper relay though. Weird is right!... I keep wondering what it'll do/not do tomorrow?!! Cheers, Robbo
  10. Are these the three amigos on the front of the block, below the manifold? One blue, one yellow & one black? If so I checked the wiring & it seems ok. How is the sensor removed to fit a new one? Does it unscrew? Thanks for the tips guys. Not sure whether this would cause the oil warning light to flash, or my rear wiper not to work, maybe just coincidence & unrelated! Cheers, Robbo
  11. More Shinnanigans this morning!... temp gauge goes straight up & warning light flashes as before (this is from a cold start), only now the oil warning light flashes too!!! All levels are fine, & oil & coolant temps seem fine when the cars warmed up. The fan still kicks in when I switch off the ignition (even when cold). It now appears that my rear wiper is working again though!... bizarre! I think I need an auto electrician to check it out, I can't see anything obvious. Pretty sure it must be an electrical problem??? Ever seen the film 'Christine'? Any suggestions welcome (thanks Henny). Robbo
  12. Thought I'd post my own thread after hijacking someone elses, apologies. Anyway, more bizarre fan behaviour on the way home from work tonight. I started it up & straight away the temp gauge shot up to the top & the coolant warning light started flashing! switched off & checked the coolant - ok, so I turn on the ignition (without starting), & temp gauge is fine, no warning light. As soon as I start the car up, the temp gauge shoots up again! 'Ar$e' I thinks, & drive home. Arrive home & oil temp is around 90 (coolant gauge has been at max all the while). Switch off to have another look under the bonnet & the fan kicks in! Switch ignition back on (without starting engine) & temp gauge is normal (around the 80 mark), but the fan stops. Start the engine & up goes the temp gauge again! Switch off & the fan kicks in again! & stays on for ages (even at 80 deg). What's going on???!!!... help! Isn't there some kind of coolant temp sensor on the block?, could this be at fault? Cheers, Robbo

Something else just occurred to me which may or may not be connected - I've also been having trouble with my cat 1 alarm system recently - sometimes it'll deactivate, sometimes it won't & sets the alarm off. It's an old Foxguard, the type with the phono jack plug which plugs into a socket in the steering column. It just seems a bit wierd that all these things have started playing up at the same time! Cheers Mat, found the 'how to'. I'm not sure if it would be the ignition switch though, as I've never had any problems starting the car. BTW, my car is black, but it's done it when the it's been put away in the garage! Robbo

How can I check if it's the ignition switch? & what's involved in fitting a new one? Cheers, Robbo

Dunno if it's a coincidence or not but I'm having this (possible) fan relay problem, and I've also got probs with my rear wiper not turning off (not the relay cos I've fitted a new one) ?!! See my other post. Robbo
  18. Had it on Bosch diagnostic machine last night at mate's garage (great when you can get it done for free!) - 'Hall Sensor error' - same as I had before when cam position sensor was caput! I replaced it about 6 months ago, so I guess either it's got damaged while the head was being replaced, or it's not connected properly. Cheers, Robbo

No, water is deffo not hot after 2-3 hours, not even registering on temp gauge. I think maybe a sensor too, although I had a diagnostic done yesterday & nothing came up (apart from cam sensor error, but that's another story!) Cheers, Robbo

Yeah Mat, it seems to come on spontaneously, it doesn't stay on for 2-3 hours Kongo! I mean't that I've heard it come on 2-3 hours after I've switched the engine off, then running for a few minutes before switching off again. Could there be a sensor/switch fault somewhere? Cheers, Robbo

    Not a Fan!

It only stays on for a couple of minutes, but it's coming on when the engine's had plenty of time to cool down (sometimes a couple of hours later!) Robbo

I was just about to post on this exact problem! wierd! I've noticed my fan coming on when the engine is well cooled down, sometimes 2-3 hours later! It seems to work normally when driving, I'm not getting any problems with overheating. Where is the fan thermo switch on a VR6? Cheers, Robbo
  23. Need more advice on this guys, I replaced the relay (position no. 2 on the board, mine was a small black one with 22 on the top Kev!). Still won't turn off!!!... what do I try next? Stalk, motor? Cheers, Robbo
  24. Hi all, been doing a bit of tinkering at the weekend (ooeer!), & thought I'd give my MAF a quick check to try & suss out some flat spot isses (I haven't been able to get it checked on VAG-COM yet). Anyway, I ran the car up to normal op temp & unplugged the MAF... nothing happened, no change in idle or anything. So I went for a quick drive around the block & the car drove exactly the same as before. Oh bugger! I thought, dead MAF. Except I then switched off the ignition & re-started & it ran like a bag of spanners, wouldn't idle etc. as you'd expect with the MAF unplugged. Is this normal? Cheers, Robbo
  25.   Nice one Mat. Cheers for the replies guys. Ain't Corrados wonderful!... after nearly 20 years of reliable VW / Audi ownership, I've finally got the one I always wanted & it turns out to be the lemon!!! (only joking!) After spending the best part of a grand on the 100k overhaul stuff, first the coil pack packed up, then 2 leads inexplicably split, my alarm decides to get tempramental, next I find I've got a leaking sump gasket, & now my rear wiper goes dicky!... All this after 9 months of relatively trouble free motoring! Robbo
