    CUTS OUT

ISV probably needs cleaned out. ISV - Idle stablization Value. Do a search for "ISV AND VR6". There's loads of threads on this and how to clean it etc... Not sure about the burning smell. Is it more of an oily burning smell? Most cars smell a bit if you give them a bit of a thrashing!! Timo.
  2. There has been revisions the the aux pump on the vr6. Trim the guide channels you talked about and the plug will fit on and stay on. I had the same problem when I changed my pump not so long ago. I used a sharp knife to get rid of the channel(s) and then plugged it on and its fine. Just out of curiousity does you aux pump run with just the igntion on (car not started). It makes a mild hum when its working. Its a long story why I'm asking this, just something weird that happened to mine after it died on me. Cheers Timo.
  3. Cheers for that Andy. I just hope the ones I got off GSF is correct!! Or I could be going back to the dealers and eating some humble pie!!! (Yeah right!!!) They are the part numbers I got too! Bonus  Thanks Timo.
  4. Dont panic, found it on that russian site. Rang VW up, they want £20 +vat for it. Told them to shove it where the sun dont shine. Can get it from gsf for £5 + vat + P&P. £20..... they're having a laugh!! Timo.
  5. Part number anyone? please need it quick! Ta Timo.
  6. Probe needs to be on the car as it measures fuel/oxygen ratio. Or something along those lines. No point in testing it off the car. I would be inclined to put it back on and test it. Its not the cheapest thing to replace, especially if you find it wasn't the problem! Timo.
  7. Need the part number of the thermoswitch that's in the back of the radiator on ma G60. VW parts department couldn't find it  . Cheers Timo. Anyone got that link to the russian website that has EKTA on it? Can find it on the forum. Should have put it in my favourites
  8. No worries. Glad to be of service. If you do a search on this site for "Koni AND H&R" you'll get a few threads about that suspension set up. Timo.
  9. Koni dampers and H&R springs seem to be the best combination that most people have found, especially members on this forum. Replace all top mounts, bump stops, bushings etc... when you get them fitted. You'll need you wheels re-aligned after you have fitted the lowered suspension. Best done a few weeks after fitting them to let them bed in. Cost:- around 150 for the H&R springs and around 300 for the dampers. Make sure they are the top adjustable ones. Bigger wheels mean your speedo will be more accurate. It wont show a too low speed. My vr6 has 17" wheels on it and the actual speed that I'm doing is 1.5mph under what it says on the speedo and is consistent across all legal speeds. I checked it with GPS. I wouldn't worry about that. Hope that helps Timo.
  10. No, wrong way round! Loooking at the the front of the engine. back row, from left to right:- 1 3 5 front row, from left to right:- 2 4 6 Hope that helps Timo.
  11. 100% sure the thermostat in ma G60 has bit the dust. I fixed the coolant temp. guage the other day as it hasn't been working since I purchased the car. The temperature barely reaches 70 C on a long run. The oil sits 88-90 C (It has an oil cooler 8) ). I've done some searches on the forum and the thermostat looks like the culprit. Am I doing any harm to the engine by using it?? It must been stuck open as all the pipes get hot rather than some staying hot and others cold if it had stuck the other way (I think that's how it works). Heard it quite easy to change, also there's mention of getting a colder operating one? Where's the best place to get them? gsf? or stick with VAG? cheers Timo.

    u like.

g-man, you got pm mate!! 8)
  13. Right here goes. I have just had a lot of problems with my lambda probe and the fatal black smoke. Check the voltage across the two white wires when the engine is running. These are the heater wires for the lambda probe. volatge should be battery voltage (12 volts +) . Then check the volatge of the across the black and brown (probe side). Engine must be up to operating temperature and has been running for at least 2 minutes (The engine doesn't use the signal from the probe until 2 minutes after starting). The voltage should be between 0.1 and 0.9 volts. It should flucuate between these values. Timo.
  14. Spelling looks good to me Timo  Game On!!! 8) Makes a change! Timo.
  15. make sure its had a head rebuild which should include timing chains, valve stem seals, chain tensioners etc. If its had that done you're laughing otherwise you could be in for a hefty bill in the near future. The golf vr6 engine is generally a lot stronger than the corrado. Import will cause problems with insurance, that is, it will cost more. Timo.

    VR6 Advice

If its had the timing chains done make sure the value stems seals were done too. These should have been done at the same time otherwise it was a waste of time. If you drive it, make sure it doesn't smoke after a lengthy period of over-run. I.e. Get the car up to 60mph or so and then leift your foot off the gas and let it slow down to 20-30mph (without braking or changing gear) and then sink your foot on the throttle. No smoke = good engine, seals fine and no bore wear!! If it had the chain/stems seals etc done already, you're talking about an easy £1k saving that you wont have to spend on the car in the near future!! 8) Hope that helps Timo.
  17. Only 120 myself. Had just past the Police who had just pulled someone up on the hard shoulder!! It was a very opportunist (that's definitely spelt wrong!! ) moment and I took full advantage. That kind of speed is were the VR6 comes into its stride. It's sooooo stable at that speed and keeps going and going like its never going to run out of steam 8) Timo.
  18. yup 8) . I have both!! My G60 is not as refined as the VR6 by quite a distance. But as far a fun goes I prefer the G60. Its a real sporty beast. Instant power is a bonus!! A 50Kg difference (actually I think its slighty less) is all that separates the engine weights. Thats only a small (very small!) adult. However the weight is over the front wheels but the VR6 handles it well. I would say the turns in aswell as but there aint much difference and my G60 is lowered, whilst my VR6 is standard and could do with a suspension overhaul. Hope that helps and if I had to choose only one it would have to be the VR6. Its such a refined machine in comparison. Its all about what you want. Hope that helps. Timo.
  19. Will do, have been!!! 8) Fixed the temp. guage today as well. Having a good day considering the hangover  Timo.
  20. I HAVE FIXED IT       The secret to my success was realising that the reading I was getting from the signal wire from the lambda probe was a -ve voltage. After studying the bentley manual it finally twigged what was wrong with it. The last time the lambda probe was change (previous owner(s) or cowboy garages) the signal wire and ground were wired up the wrong way round. There is a join in the wires between the ECU and the connector harness so thankfully I had nothing to do with it when I changed the lambda probe 8) . So I now have a spare probe. Thank god I went for a £30 universal rather than the genuine rip off item. Yippee I am so chuffed with myself, its taken so much effort, checking all other possibilities. I just wish I had noticed it sooner. It doesn't help when the lambda signal wire changes from a violet wire to a black wire at the connection and the ground wire being orignally black, it is quite confusing and I can see how it confused who ever wired up the last one. Thanks for all you help guys Simon
  21. check what with the distributor? had a look at it the other day, cleaned it up (not that it needed it) checked all the connection. Look in good nick. I might try adjusting the timing at some point, although I cant see how that's the problem either. The car was fine when I bought it, went down hill after about a week. cheers Timo.
  22. I GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I've tried everything anyone has suggested and more. Replaced vacuum pipe this morning. The one that was on it was 93cm long  . Still the car wont sit at 50-60mph, chuggs away and spews fuel. If I pull the vac line off, the car wont idle and doesn't take kindly to revving. I cleaned all the earths, they are all in good nick, put some of that copper stuff on them to help with the connection. I've measured the lambda probe with a multimeter, I seem to be getting -ve voltage reading from it!! (I do have the multimeter connected the right was round and I am measuring the connections on the plug the right way round to, very confusing!!) I'm pretty sure it wasn't like that the other day I checked it. Anyway the value after starting the car builds up from 0 to 0.94-0.95 at idle with a warm engine. I know its supposed to fluctuate but sometimes multimeters cant keep up with that. The voltage drops alot when the engine is revved? Dont know whether thats right or not? drops to 0-0.1 sort of range and then comes back up to ~0.94 ish. It has to be the lambda probe that causing the problem, it runs fine when this is unplugged. Replaced it with a universal one the other day and it still behaves exactly as before. Really wont it to all work, its doing my head in. Anyway, got a stag night in blackpool tonight!!! that'll keep my mind of it! cheers Simon
  23. I hope that's what it is, off to pick up the hose now!! (crosses fingers, toes, legs, arms and .......) ta Timo.
  24. Tried this, connected a wire from the connector harness straight to the -ve on the battery and guess what happened. It ran even worse!!   I bloody well give up. I thought trouble shooting a vr6 was hard but this is taking the p$ss. I hope its the vacuum pipe that buggered otherwise there's nothing else it could be. Timo.
