    Metering head

Recharged my battery on Saturday night - Sunday morning car won't start, not even a judder  Anyway, thought i had it buttoned down to the switch unit or coil, and then get told by the auto electrical guy it's actually the metering head not allowing the injectors to work :!: Someat about depressing a bypass on underside of metering head and engine fires ok :?: Have heard horror stories about cost of these metering heads, anyone needed a replacement before, or ever had to 'recondition' one  Any info appreciated. Ta

    No fire?

Just got back from holiday this morning :( Anyway, my valvers been stood for eight days - and this morning it just wouldn't fire, it just kept turning over and over and over (30 seconds plus) making the wheezy noise when it just doesn't want to fire???? Then a real stink of petrol. I changed the inlet manifold last month, and thereafter reset the timing and had the mixture adjusted - it was doing it a little before, but not this bad. Weird thing is when i stopped the ignition it made an effort to fire :!: Any ideas anyone :!: ?
  6. when you do finally race him - try not to lose him amongst every other damn golf on the road :!: 'familiarity breads contempt' I think Clarkson once said
  7. Defo ignore the 8v - it was targeted at people doing the weekly shop :D I'd agree with chrishill, go for a good g60 if you can sponsor it - if not the valver is still a great car.

    power steering pump

I'm bit more confused after looking at G&S website as ZF one is indicated for 16v!! But there is a definite surcharge of £60 in addition to £120, which only gets refunded if the unit you provide them is serviceable, and gets restocked for the next punter :D Bit of a risk i s'spose - might go down the scrappy route

    power steering pump

Works out about £120 provided your 'whiny' one is serviceable! If not they'll charge you an extra £60 ish - been looking at doing mine :(
  10. I've just been to a farm disposal sale in Chudleigh (Devon) and spotted one amongst a tonne of landrover spares - needless to say I ahem 'rescued' it from an uncertain future :D Just lucky i guess  Re a website - just search under 'Mocal Oil Coller' on your search engine, you'll get tonnes of links 8)
  11. The non 'tip top' injector housings shouldn't affect it - provided he's pushed the injectors all the way back in that is!!! I'd check he reset the idle settings off the coil first, and then look at the idle stabilisation valve - there's plenty of threads on this sort of problem, just not usually mechanic caused!! Have you run it to warm? Does it still fluctuate?
  12. 28 months, 40k miles & £2,600 the lot :! translating to £1,100ish/ year or 6.5p/mile :D Add car and petrol allowance, and i'm making money  Henny - think you've done the sum wrong  Yours is how many miles you travelled for a pound :D

    Embarassing air box

Sorry! I should have said when going up hill in 5th... My missus in her vr  could hear me coming up the hill about 50 yards behind her the other day :D It's the crappy torque when she'd not spinning.

    Embarassing air box

PhatVR6 - Well, when i struggle past cars at 80 and my mota is making an absolute racket It's almost humiliating :!: Stevemac - Its Kr, with 50mm induction manifold. I think the best way to deal with is to absorb the noise, or at least take the 'edges' of it with some absorbing material lining the box, or on the surfaces around it which probably amplify and reflect it :!: Am looking to get loads of work done 9A bottom end, cams etc so the (my) problem is only gonna get worse/ louder :D

    Embarassing air box

Drilled about 15ish holes at 12mm dia. in side and front corner of box so didn't go OTT :!: At low revs I agree the noise is good, but when accellerating to overtake typically on motor way - say 75 - 90, the noise gets proportionally louder in relation to your foot on the gas..... BUT..... the acceleration no way justifies the additional noise, which disappears if you ease off the gas a little  Think it's time for a turbo :D
  17. eerrr a mate bought them for me about a year ago from German & Swedish as i didn't have time, they didn't come in a box :!: They're fairly distinctive though - Due to the fact there is no discernable pattern!! Unlike other cross drilled pads which usually have the holes in groups or curved lines. Do these sound like yours?
  18. Drilled my airbox a while ago, and at same time removed the snorkel, shoved a cold air feed in and bought a K&N filter for good measure… anyway, the ‘induction growl’ was doing my head, especially under load, so I shoved the snorkel back in (another forum think removing snorkel actually undermined good induction, and only served to make a sh1t load of noise  ) and consequently the ‘growl/ noise’ is less… Anyway the noise is still doing my head in, and whilst I want the quicker pick up, and can live with some noise, I want it a bit quieter. :x What causes the noise? The major ribbing of the air box suggests it limits the box’s reverberation, therefore would bracing the box further help?! At the moment I’m even considering carpeting the box, either in it’s own enclosure, or even lining the box with carpet tiles  … any knowledge appreciated!!?
  19. Had an intermittent vibration problem a year ago with standard pads and disc setup. So decided to change with cross drilled pads and pagid fast road pads like you've got - then I got the droning problem :!: Tends to happen when rapidly braking, and resonance of drone gets deeper the harder and longer the braking is, that said the brakes are damn site better than the original set up so would stick with em if I were you, and since I had the full tracking checked the problem is definitely occuring less. I'd change the pads and discs for new and see what happens, G&S do all the kit - don't forget copper grease on the back of the pads though :D Advice on previous link is obviosuly very sound, your 'hub to wheel' gap sounds a bit hairy though!!!! I guess its a case of suck it and see

    Rear Calipers dead?

Had my rear calipers changed about two years ago cos they seized, lucklily yesterday morning I realised the same sluggish problem in time, and simply 'eased' the offending caliper with a screwdriver and liberal helpings of WD :!: Fair do's it was cold, but in my case I'm actually thinking this problem is more to do with the massively dusty pads i'm using, and rubber handbrake boot some guys have mentioned :D Re the ice, I purposely don't heave the hand brake on, that way the friction created sorts it if there is any :D Anyways - Am gonna give the calipers a proper overhaul this weekend, as the car seemed to run a lot freerer after the WD
  21. my mum has the early coupe Greg (89) 2.2 E i think - and she loves it :!: Seriously though, she's had it for a long time and swears by it, and being from a semi pro rally background she provides a pretty good endorsement!! It's complete standard of course - my Dad was a dealer , so it's in tiptop condition still. Would agree with VR6 er, it needs decent suspension and tune up :!: I considered one for a while...... :D
  22. blue/ black 2.0 litre or VR heading westbound on A30 over Bodmin Moor yetsreday evening, doubt you saw me as the road is split at that point.
  23. I was having the same daydream last Saturday!!! Came across a Y reg saab 900 rotting away in a field, though engine is in tasty condition - and you gotta love the dirty great manifold link with TURBO splashed across it :D Like you say tho - a lottt lotta work
  24. .....just occured to me - I picked up a copy of that free local car rag you get from service stations at the weekend, think the name is 'auto freeway' :?: ain't got it with me at mo, but there's a vr for sale in hayle if i remember correctly - get it checked out
  25. steeeeeaaaadddddyyyy :D :D I'm fairly satisfied with my valver and my 'big plans' for it at the moment!! But if i had to choose, i'd probably go VR6. Mind you the G60's are rare as hens teeth, and have that individuality, I only know of one down these parts so chances are you'll have to travel.... anyways welcome and best of luck
