1991 Tornado Red Corrado G60 Daily / Project

Not much of an update. Needing four tyres for the rz's but the're badly needing a refurb and I thnk one rim is beyond repair so decided instead to try and find a bargain and picked up these 16" Advanti SG40's with nearly new Dunlops quite cheap. Not to sure about how they'll look until I get them on but need bolts and spigot rings first. As for the Corrado itself that's 8500 miles now since the rallye engine went in and it hasn't skipped a beat. Yeah it's using a wee bit of oil and the lambda's still disconnected but still works as it should and have great confidence in it. Rigged up a temporary boost gauge and only making 0.6 bar so not too great for a stage 2 but not bad either. As for recent work i've just replaced the o/s window regulator. Paintworks not standing up too great with spreading laquer peel but will get done at some point. Still heading in the right direction. My oldman has took on this so garage space is limited for a while until we've finished replacing rot with metal. -
A true 'barn find' is literally something that's sat in a barn neglected and forgotten about for many years and needs a complete nut and bolt restoration.

Hi, most of us G60 owners have had these issues and it can be a number of things. An emissions tester, multi-meter and a timing light would be a handy investment. The CO pot can be adjusted via a screw under the blue cap. Checking it's resistance on the two outer pins should be around 500 ohms on a standard set up but given the mods you have it'll have need to be set up correctly but If it's not chucking out black smoke and running fine it's likely this is all that's needed. But without you being able to test the emissions there isn't much that can be achieved bar checking resistances of the CO pot, both throttles switches, blue temp sender and lambda. Ignition timing also, especially if it's not been checked since the cam belts been changed and will definately interfere with the combustion. Plenty guides out there on how to check various things and set it up. Also check the vac pipe that goes from the back of the throttle to the ecu is intact and on the correct nipple along with being exactly 1m in length as that too will screw up fueling. P.s. - Ecu vac/boost pipe should be on the nipple nearest the top, pointing slightly towards drivers side. The other, lower and pointing slightly the other way, goes to the carbon cannister pipework and only reads vacuum so if the're round the wrong way then it's the likely the problem. Unlikely, but worth checking.

Aslong as it's coming down a bit and not going up. Government screws us over, that's what they do. But also like to give the illusion of positive change once in a while usually to distract us from something else.

Cheers mate, Yeah not sure how the fitter managed to do that as he put a good think bead of sealer all the way round but just seemed to be a cavity a couple of mm long causing water to drip onto my passenger seat. All good now though!! -
Look at my thread ( link below ) for what can happen to the windscreen frame in regards to rust mate.
-
How much you be looking for it mate?
-
As above, my regulator is busted so looking for a replacement. Shipped to Scotland (PH5) Cheers.

AP's are excellent quality for the money, you can't really go wrong with them.
-
Yes Mk2 and Mk3 Golfs fit with correct top mounts.
-
I'd still be going with the water pump. Better off changing it while it's off anyway. Definately flow related.
-
I had this issue too when getting one from ecp but had a spare blue temp sensor so just fired that in it. Quite handy as a spare.

I don't even drive my C at night the lights are that bad. Have a prominent blue tinge but not sure on the type of bulbs but can barely see 15 feet in front of me. So much i've had to do to it they've kind of been overlooked. Plan to upgrade the loom but keeping an eye on this thread. Had aftermarket HID's on previous cars but wouldn't consider them on and older car like the Corrado.

Don't think the vr's have the run on switch like g60's that activates the fuel pump and radiator fan so likely to be the fan control module.
-
Nice work, although i would have kept it G60 over a 1.8t.

I doubt the figures stack up to what the daily mail have published.

Sill repair section available from Classic Parts via VW Heritage

You any pics of the offending section of corrosion. There is other issues to consider too, the further back you go from where the door meets the wing the outer sill is spot welded to the inner sill so any donor section will be harder to cut out. -
Notoriously bad for rotting out in both top corners and that is likely your problem unfortunately if it's leaking so usually quite a job. Just had to weld and paint my frame but managed to get new screen fitted through insurance.

I'd just contact someone breaking a raddo and have them cut out a section for your welder to work with. No guarantee that A panel repair section will have enough sill to work with.. -

I've recently done mine, what started visually as a tiny hole became about 8 inches of rotten sill below the A piller along with the area behind the bottom of the wing. I just cut a section out a breaker further back near the middle of the car and welded it in and fabricated the rest. -
Your not having much joy after the 90 mile mark lol. These engines do run hot and do benifit from having an upgraded oil cooler so not a major concern. Water temp will proably correspond with oil temp as oil is cooled via the oil and water heat exchanger above oil filter. Do you know what kind of oil is in it? As for your running issue could be timing related. Lambda failure possibly as the heat can kill them, although you say it's fine up at the higher revs, is that on full throttle? As lambda is overridden on wide open throttle, try disconnecting the rectangle plug located on top of the rear engine mount and see if it idles and run better, if it does then lambda has had it. Next port of call would be to check both throttle switches are functioning correctly.

Both mk2 and mk3 golfs fit with the correct top mounts. Spring loading may be an issue given the heavier vr engine though. AP's are excellent coils for the money.
