VAG-COM scanning & help

Was this a USB cable??? If so I think thats the problem or maybe the power supplied to the port by the laptop....

ah, yes it was the USB cable...

It's worth trying a different port on the laptop as some are on board and some maybe header'd and there can be a difference in the power supplied.

Fixed !!!

 

glovebox light had blown then blew the fuse which also stoped the spoiler and then the car stoped.

Why does the glove box/spoiler fuse going stop the car from running, some strange wireing i think!

my 95 2.0 16v has the 16 pin plug,can this only be used for abs fault finding? does its ecu store faults at all and if it does and vag com cant read them is it like one of the hand held ones that can or if the ecu cant store faults at all is it just manual testing of parts thanks, its a bit confusing reading the previous posts to tell if the ecu on a 16valve even stores any kind of faults..

Hi,

I have G60 and I checked the VAG-Com socket which is 2x2. However it seems one of the cables is missing. Could is be like that? Or I will remove the dashboard to find it out where is the missing cabe

 

3 wires means analogue (blink code) diagnostics - VAG-COM not useable.

 

blink code ok, but how to get these blink code ?

How can we have the fault codes on G60 engines ?

Fixed !!!

Can someone explain a bit more about this electrical interface isolation coupling? I've got a 2.0 16v and just want to make sure I purchase the correct cables. In this something in addition to the interface cables, or a special type of interface cable?

 

Also, does it matter if I purchase serial or USB when I get my cables? I'd like to be able to get as much out of VAG-COM as I can, so more than just ABS faults if that's possible.

 

I've just checked my laptop, and I only have USB, so guess I'll have to order myself one of those type cables. Just hoping it doesn't affect what I can do with it.

 

Any further advice will be much appreciated!

Serial/USB is just for preference, or, in your case, because you don't have serial! (A lot of laptops are dropping the old serial/parallel plugs now.)

The cheapo cables use an opto-isolator to protect the ECU from voltage spikes. Essentially this is a chip with an internal optical sender/receiver pair to 100% isolate the car's circuit from the computer's. The only data passed between the two circuits is done by light.

The newer cables (for the newer cars) use a much faster electrical isolation mechanism, but I'm not 100% sure how that works.

The opto-isolator is in the adaptor cable that you might buy. If you're going the whole hog and buying a cable from Ross-Tech themselves, it'll be all you need, rest assured..

Just noticed Halfords are selling the Gunsons VAG fault code readers at half price (£9.99) - obviously no where near as good as vagcom but may be of use to someone... don't list Corrado on the box but do list VR6 so should work...

Just ordered my cables from eBay, so should have those in a few days. With regard to registering VAG-COM, have any of you guys just bought a licence from Ross-Tech, rather than the whole thing? Think it's listed as $99, so just wondered if anyone had purchased the licence only and what it had equated to in sterling - I make it about £52 at today's exchange rate.

 

Also, if I don't register the s/w, am I right in thinking that it will still report all the fault codes, but just not give me descriptions, so all I need to do is just look them up?

I tried one on mine and got nowhere with it, they definately don't work on the Corrado, although they list the Passat with the 9A engine on the box. Not sure on VR6's though.

Hi I purchase the obd 2 cable from ebay and downloaded the VAG-COM software from the ross tech website and it will not scan my car (Corrado 16v 1995 with abs fault, the light comes on then goes out then come back on again when the car reaches 10 mph and stays on), it comes up as the port is not working properly on laptop I have run a test on the port and says it functions correctly, confused! Also where is the plug fitted to the MK3 Golf? Its not under the gear gaitor. Any help very much appriciated. Failing that any one with VAG-COM in the south west. (Cornwall of devon)

Got the ABS fault on mine again this morning when I started her up to drive to work. As usual, the ABS light stayed on for the entire journey. Thought it was worth another go at seeing if VAG-COM would communicate, but unfortunatley it still came up with the too many communication errors message.

 

I know that a VW specialist garage that I used to use was able to successfully connect to the ABS controller about 1 1/2 years ago (as he found a fault with the brake pedal travel sensor - which he subsequently replaced), although he did mention at the time, that my ABS system was of the type that didn't store the faults and so you only got the chance to see the fault codes if you plugged VAG-COM into the car whilst the fault was still active.

 

At what point did the ABS systems change, so that fault codes are kept after the car is switched off? Mine is one of the early '92 cross-over models, so wondering if the ones with the new interior got the newer ABS system.

 

Guess I'm going to have to open her up and take a look at the connections for the ABS controller. Where abouts it is located? Is it easy to get to?

1. I'm using an adapter from serial to usb, but it works fine on OBDII.

 

Well I'm using a USB port on my laptop, but the instructions I got with the interface I purchased were to download a driver to sort of make the computer think that it's really a serial port and that I needed to use the serial version of VAG-COM. Just wondering if I should have done that, or should I have gone with the Ross-tech instructions for really using a USB port and subsequently using the USB version of the software?

 

Any thoughts?

I'm using the serial version of vag-com too.

 

I tried the USB version and got nowhere.

 

I've remembered a 4th item, which is a small jumper conection on the adapter which you can change the settings with. I'll look into that over the weekend.

 

I have also emailed the supplier of the adapter who was very knowledgable and helpful when I bought it, so hopefully he will provide some more clues.

ummmz, anyone got VAG-COM and is based anywhere near Oxford?

 

Been fiddling around since getting him back on the road, and would like to give him a check over to see everything is cool.

 

I am sure I am dropping power, I would just like to know what to blame ;)
