Black magic returns home

Recommended Posts

Just read the brake part of it. I do think 288 calipers is a must and can be considered OEM+. Better brake, still same fit that's pretty good! Yes, the other components are getting old so you can't expect today's car braking but it's a simple upgrade and not really costly which is rare on a Corrado. I would upgrade to stainless hoses for I slightly better braking. Rubber hoses absorb some of the brake fluid pressure by somewhat inflating. With stainless it goes straight to the piston for maximum pressure. it's not night and day difference but I'll take anything that adds up to a better braking system.

Keyo, since you like oem parts. Did the MK3 GTI in UK came with front oem red calipers? Here yes, sometimes a see sets of brand new old ones going for $400 cad = £240

Just a thought! Cheers

Mk4 288s are the same as late mk3 - no spacer needed as long as you use mk3 late disks.

you’ll need banjo hoses either mk3 (I think mk4 are also the same?) or braided etc.

If you go 312s you can only use a mk4 disk and you’ll need 6mm spacers

Dox, can you educate me more about those late rotors please? Until I read your comment, I never knew or read anything about that? So early MK3 need spacers but not late? Why is that and from what year is considered late MK3?

Thank you!!

Early MK3 had 280mm as well so same as Corrado. Later ones had the 288mm upgrade. Think the change occurred around 95.

ABV Im not sure about the MK3 - its a GTI I have never owned to be honest- it is possible I suppose that the anniversary edition came with red callipers.

Its true when you think about it- the VR6 is heavier then the g60 and more powerful so it is surprising VW did not upgrade the brakes to 288 mm from factory.

Thanks Sean I will look on etka later and find the part numbers - be interesting to see if you can still get them new-  I could then use my 280 mm from the VR to upgrade on my MK2 golf .

Just out of interest if I can find a second hand set- how much does big red roughly charge for refurb.

Thanks

Hi ABV,

I can confirm the Mk3 does have an option for a 288 mm desribed as RED.

NO1 on diagram.

Dox/ Shaun are these correct fitment for the corrado mod ?

Thanks

https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/en/bremssattelgehause-golf-gti-dbc664.html

Its £400 for the set but would have to get carries to - works out to a fair bit so not a great option- .

MK3 288mm callipers and carriers are exactly the same as MK4 288mm which are far more plentiful.

I've never seen a MK4 with rusty pistons, they're up to 10 years newer and cheaper too.

To fit either MK4 or MK3 to the corrado you need the MK3 288mm disks

MK4 disks have a different offset and need 6mm spacers exactly the same as the 312mm do

Good to know.  Anyone got a link to the brake hose kit you need ? Dox do the 280 mm G60 upgrade on a Mk2 16v - do i need any hose kit or is it direct fit - I know you need spacers for the BBS RA but I all ready have some fitted. Cheers

Corrado disks are 5 stud, Golf MK2 are 4 stud.

You'll need the VR6 callipers and carriers, [pad - disk - pad] thickness is wider on the G60 set up than the factory 16v set up can cope with.

Hoses are the same.

Got these decals VR6 for the 288 mm brake upgrade- comes in a pack of 8 with different sizes - going with white decal and red caliper - like the uprated GTI performance pack calipers basically but with VR6 script.

All in delivered £9.00

Ya that ebay post is hard to follow.

I bought a kit like this from these guys in the USA. But it looks like they only have front and rear kits with either mk3 or MK4 rears option. Not just the front ones...
