  1. I've had DAB in a few cars in various guises.

Originally, I got one of those Revo units which come with a 'windscreen' aerial and ran that in my Passat V6 (going back a few years now).

The reception was 'ok' but I did enjoy the larger range of music, and it worked fine to and from work, so suited at the time.

The unit got shifted to my Passat W8 and I did eventually get an external magnetic aerial. Pretty small, and it used it's magnetic connection to the car as a resonator to pick up great signal. But, it tended to freeze every now and again. I guess the Revo unit was very early.

    Then got a Smart car.

They're plastic, therefore, the external aerial didn't work.. lol. Back to the internal one which I mounted in the front 'bonnet'.

Signal was pretty good - much like the Passat V6 though. Not the greatest experience.

I then moved to my current car which is an Audi A4 with built-in DAB.

So it uses its tailfin aerial and supplementary aerial in the back window - and the signal is absolutely perfect. Love it. And missed it a lot when in France this week - who knew France had no DAB!? It's all FM, and terrible coverage!

The Audi unit has FM fallback too - so if listening to Radio 1, for example, and the DAB signal drops, it automatically reverts back to FM (which is has time-delayed by a second or two so you don't notice - normally FM is a second or two ahead of DAB!) and brings it back when signal returns. Flawless.

And yes, with good components, the quality difference is clear - but remember some stations are higher bitrate than others. The less commercial, smaller stations tend to be a lower bandwidth - and therefore don't sound as clear.

Radio 1 and Capital are 160kbit/sec for example.

Chill is 96kbit/sec and mono, IIRC, too...

So - the long and short of it - I think DAB is really only a good experience that you will enjoy if you get a good unit AND ensure you have a good aerial.

If you scrimp on either, you'll just make it a 2nd rate 'add-on' to your car entertainment rather than the main thing you use.

    My 2p ;)

I'm changing cars in April and will be installing DAB in that too, somehow!

  2. Perhaps a quick description on each link might help your chances.

For example - it would interest people to know you're selling 6 Corrado headlamps on link #3, but if you come into the advert and just see a sea of links, you might not bother to get that far...

And if you took those to the tip, I think you might get shot before you emigrate... ;)

  3. Why do threads still show unread content even after I've read them? Is it something I'm doing?

Technically... if you're using the 'new posts' buttons (which I've brought over from the users that remember the system running on phpBB) then you've read the posts, but it doesn't mark the thread as being read... It's bizarre really. Simple 'fix' is to hit the 'Mark all forums read' button at the top of the page. Not the solution though... think it's just a vBulletin 'thing'.. :(

just sorted my overlapping header/menu/advert issue by going into my setting on the forum and turning "skimlinks" off

I've now disabled Skimlinks for all logged in users.

So it may look a little messed up if you're not logged in, but will fix itself once you do!

I'll have to monitor if this affects it as a revenue stream though... ;) (only a few quid a month, let's just hope the bots click stuff when seeing it still!)

Interesting, Andi is on holiday at the moment and I know about the skimlinks but don't really want to mess with it too much. If you guys can disable it for now GREAT. I'll tell Andi when he's back (no doubt he'll read this anyway).

I READ EVERYTHING. I SEE THE FORUM LIKE MATRIX CODE.

    Or something.. ;)

I've added a "Latest Threads" link to the Tab bar at the top.

This is the same as "What's New?" but excludes all the Marketplace (For Sale / Wanted, etc) forums.

THREADS MARKED AS READ / LATEST THREADS UPDATE:

    Aaaah, I've found a setting....

Ok, so whether you had read a thread was currently kept in the Cookies (ie. your browser).

I've now changed it so that this is now logged in the database AND will only keep threads that have been active in the past 10 days.

So if you return to the site after a little holiday, you won't have 1,393 pages of 'New Posts'... I can increase this to 14 or more days if you think there's a new...? Perhaps "standard 2 week holiday in Spain" duration? ;)

Downside is that you've all come on to the site and gone "EH? WHY ARE THERE ALL THESE NEW POSTS?" as it's brought all the last 10 days of threads back in too! Have a quick read through, then hit 'Mark all threads read' when you're ready, and you should be good to go. I hope.

    Lemme know.

  4. Hi all,

With the migration to the new Classifieds system, we chose to move just 3 months worth of adverts, as we weren't sure if the older ones were still for sale or not (as the majority of people never set the ad to 'Sold' due to the slight backwardness of the old system!) - but some of you may have had a car up for sale for longer than that.

If you wish us to restore it - can you please reply in this thread and we can pull it out of the backup and convert it to the new system.

    Thanks.

  5. Yep, just tried that and still getting older stuff than the previous visit....

It only clears if your session expires - and because I've upped the session time to 12 hours to stop the frequent log-outs, it builds up.

If you hit "Mark Forms Read" at the top, though, that'll blank your list.

Basically, vB works in a different way to phpBB - it's too clever for it's own good, sometimes!

  6. Yes, that's members "still logged in" - i.e. those who have been here in the past 12 hours.

But the guests is right.. we get visited by a LOT of bots, combing through the site.

Just been visited by the Internet Explorer Site Acceleration bots which cache all the Javascript, for example...

Google visits every day and reads at least 1,500 pages on each visit.

Hence the #2 position on Google for the single keyword 'Corrado'... :)

  7. I like the new layout guys. One thing (and this may have been mentioned above). How is the 'new posts' button meant to work? Whenever I log on to check the forum, and click new posts, I am getting stuff which is the past 24 hours, not what's new since I last logged on. Is that right?

    Hit the logo instead..

Site looks good but I have same over lap problem on my Android phone (galaxy s2), old site was fine. I guess its a bit to much to expect it to be perfect on every version of phone browser so not a big issue from my point of view just thought I'd mention it.

Buy Tapatalk from the Android market. You won't regret it. A lot better way to view the site on your phone.

Thanks, mate. I'll have to have a look when I'm back from holiday, unless you can instruct either Toby or Tom (VR6) what to change...
