If you find any rust on the arches, I have a copy of the VW doc that details the rework, I left it on the dash when I took mine in for the assessment
-
Good choice Kev
Some research suggests it's another typical VAG turbo engine that makes more than quoted, around 250hp in this case.I was speaking to some engineers in Wolfsberg some years ago who said they have to give power readings for all places around the world so they ensure the power is what they say at high altitude meaning we get more :)
If you havent already then get the front arch liners out and remove that silly sponge, they are one of the main reasons for the rust front wings on these. On later cars they realised they had a problem and modified the foam so the arch liner no longer rubbed, wont hurt checking though.
I had both wings changed under the body/paint warranty last year without any hesitation from VW which surprised me

Looking good Oli

ha ha, yeah, wife permitting I'll do it next weekend, thanks
-
yep, your right, rear =inner.
Thanks for the info
-
Just double checked it with a vernier and the middle is 23mm (oops) I guess that answers my question
But the diameter of the rear mount does measure 17mm although it is 24 years old and quite worn, is that the right sort of size for the mount area? the poly bush measures 20mm so I guess I have the wrong bush
-
Never good to find a list of problems, most of what you've said is easily fixable, its just annoying you were told otherwise
-
Where abouts do you measure the ARB to know what size it is ?
mine seems to be larger across the middle than the 2 arms that go to the wishbones
ETKA list the 89 rado as having a 23mm but neither of the diameters on mine measure 23, its 21 and 17mm and the poly bushes I have seem lose on it :(

Looks like a good buy, not sure on the wheels but I think its just the colour of them

Nice work on the sill

Sounds good with me I have loads of double walled cardboard, foam and bubble wrap. Be warned, it's a big ass unit though as it has runners which are almost as long as the roof! I'll PM you for postage and payment arrangement.Regards
Rich

Has anyone thought about or tried fitting the 6th gear from an 02s box, I have seen and heard they have a delicate bellhousing that cracks easy so there must be a few broken boxes about
-
You have the look spot on, really like that
-
If you want 6 speed, go and fit an 02s box. They pretty much bolt straight on to 4 pot engines. The 02s is a 6 speed version of the 02a that vw took heavy inspiration from the Gemini 6 speed version of the 02a.Not quite a simple bolt on as the 02s doesnt have a speedo output so you either have to rig up your own from the ABS or you have the box stripped and swap the bellhousing for an 02a/02j bellhousing
-
Thanks John,
Thats the 6speed isnt it, would that fit into a 02J ?

As the title asks, what car is this tower from ?
I have a 70mm TIP from the maf to turbo and this looks perfect for what I need to get round it
Notice the pivot for the up and down movement is on the mount side not the engine side.
P.S. I have asked this on GTI but no one want to tell me :(
and yes, they are power steering hard lines which will be one of my projects on my car ;)
-
Great build
-
The only thing with an 02a is they are getting a little old now, unless your getting it rebuilt, have you considered an 02j.
You would need to change the driveshaft cups but they will be newer and they were fitted to the 1.8t by vw.
It may be worth thinking about upgrading the rivets on the diff with a bolt kit.

I got 4 pot brembo's on mine aswell (from a 'cough' Renault clio 197) I checked when I fitted them what MC the Renault uses and luckily it uses a 22mm the same as I have.
