How do you maintain a car battery?
Alex_G60_Fanatic replied to Alex_G60_Fanatic's topic in Engine Bay
That's just silly... :? That's what i thought! Didn't want the hassle of having to run the battery all the time just to keep it fresh! might as well let it go flat and then get a new one before the 2 year grantee runs out! Right that's it then, I'll remove the battery, get a trickle charger and top it up every few weeks for a day or so? Thanks! however.. no one answered the question about leaving the battery in the car but disconnected. Does the battery drain even when not connected to anything? -
It really depends on what your getting but I struggle to get better than 10% - 25%... I think it changes between garages :?

That will only get nicked where i live mate... Also that one still needs to get plugged in doesn't it? If i take the battery inside and put on a trikle charger will that not "overcharge" the battery? don't know about the chemistry of car batteries but with lithium rechargeables if you charge them too much over time they loose their "memory". You need to discharge and charge them on and off I thought... although... if it's in the house i don't have to leave it onto charge all the time.. maybe just every now and again. -

My car is sat outside and i have no power so i'd need this... http://www.maplin.co.uk/solar-powered-1 ... 8&t=module but then... Where do i stick it? The car is under a cover and i'd rather have that than a trickle charger in the window -
By just keeping the battery disconnected in the car will this stop it getting flat/damaged? or should i take it into the house and keep it dry and warm (there is a 2 year garantee on it mind so I may just not bother... was just wondering :) ) The car is curently SORN so i'd not be starting her often you see

there was a discussion here - viewtopic.php?f=15&t=62724 Was used as noise deadening hence changing it for noisekill. Looks nicer to in sliver (IMO)... and it wipes clean as well as being cheaper! Also I think i right in saying they don't make the OEM stuff for early bonnets any more either so those with G60's or early 16v's, this is all there is to get.. But tbh... If you like the sounds.. keep it off. It's just weight and does little for fire suppression. :D

How do everyone! What do we all think of this? http://www.beal.org.uk/automotive/lambd ... _1847.html I know it's not bosch but it's only £20... I could get two for the price of a bosch one! does anyone envisage any problems with this?

 Poor you man, that's life for ya! Love the car though mate, Looks like your keeping her going nicely :) and the garage looked snug!

wow... wounds like my Corrado adventures to a tee. How much did he want for it? There are great cars out there at the moment selling for peanuts... Hang around on here and go to the for sale section. I'm sure you can find something you like. :)

She Lives! Started first time... little puff of black from the exhaust but that's all good for being sat idle for 4 months! lovely! Updated list bellow. Next i think is the brakes as it's a relatively easy thing to do... he says

Fixed the starter last night! Need a new battery but it looks like the cause was a simple case of dirty ignition cable on the coil! Whoop!! Now onto the shops to get a battery :)

G60 Ignition Relays - what does what?
Alex_G60_Fanatic replied to Alex_G60_Fanatic's topic in Engine Bay
Well, didn't get home till 7 last night but still decided to brave the weather and have a go! Got the multimeter out and got 11.89volts across the battery. So measured from the starter to the battery got 11.84v. Then tried the red/black wire from the ignition switch... Got nothing to begin with. Then pulled it off and stuck the multimeter into the plug then turned key and got 10v. Stuck it back on and now the starter motor clicks and try's to turn!! Woop! :D Going to buy new battery as it was still REALY slow to turn over but I think my late night fiddling solved it! That ignition wire must have either been dirty or connected to the coil wrong. Eitherway happy days! -
If you have an after market locking mech Who knows!!! Take a picture and find the make and model of the locking mech and let us know

not saying that it's the best thing or the right thing to do... Just lamenting over the circumstances that the car manufacturers are putting the little classic car folk though :(

G60 Ignition Relays - what does what?
Alex_G60_Fanatic replied to Alex_G60_Fanatic's topic in Engine Bay
turn the ignition on and you hear the fuel pump priming, dash lights come on radio etc. Turn the key to start position and you can hear a low "buzz" noise coming from the engine bay, lights dim (slightly) and that's it. Motor doesn't turn or anything. The motor turns when i bridge the gap between the connections but i assume that cuts out the solenoid... the motor I got was a original bosch starter... but from ebay. Was sold in it's original box. I got a picture of it here -

wait... if my alternator isn't correctly connected would this make it not turn over either? -
G60 Ignition Relays - what does what?

Got the RAC out before, They said it was the starter motor. So just swapped that over on Saturday, refurbished one. Still wont crank. I did have an immobilizer fitter but it's been disconnected for years, since before I bought the car... I'm unsure on the wiring for it? but i have no alarm ect. Starter solenoid I assume is the little bit attached to my new starter? that looked fine... It all looked fine. The ignition switch was swapped over about 4 months ago, again a brand new one. :cuckoo: I'll test for 12v tonight when i get back from work but I've had the battery attached to jump leads while trying to crank it and that didn't help.... I'm no good and electrics you may have noticed. -
Hi fella's, done a few searches but couldn't get a definitive answer to the question above. What relays are used in the ignition circuit of a G60, and what do they do? The reason for the question is that I have a non-starting car. I have changed the ignition switch and the starter motor and still the engine doesn't crank/turn over. The car push starts so i'm getting sparks/power to the plugs, isv, fuel pump etc. just the key doesn't turn the starter motor. So.. I'm changing some of the relays. Which ones do i need to replace? :confused4: I'm going to check the voltage on the battery but TBH... I can bridge the gap on the starter and that turns but DOESN'T turn the engine flywheel... very strange, I thought the starter so long as it's spinning will jump out into the gear box and turn the engine... maybe I'm wrong
-
I've been out changing the starter motors over today... cleaning 026.jpg[/attachment:35zv7161] took the old one out and replaced with a new one but the car still wont turn over. I bridged the terminals and the starter motor turns but doesn't turn the engine! :confused4: When I use the key the motor doesn't even spin.... Does anyone know the relay number for the starter circuit? Could this be the problem?
-
by the way... am i correct in assuming that these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK2-G60-U ... 588ba87a35 are not good for the wishbone joints and suspension generally? I can imagine then being a little to hard.
-
I'll need new brake lines for the brakes anyway (not on the list but sure I needed it for an MOT..) So i could do that myself and save some wonga and get the callipers rubbed down at the same time. As for the pump i'm unsure if it's that or the switch in the actual lock... It seems very temperamental/sensitive when turning the key. When I unlock the car and then go to turn the key back if I turn the key to far back round then it sets off the pump... very odd. Maybe a loose connection at the lock side of the circuit? But tbh... That's the least of my worries! First thing to do is get some money and try and get some new suspension components... :)
