i felt more comfortable getting vw items when i rebuilt my rear beam, around the £50 iirc. beware they're not the easiest things to press in, you'll either need to get inventive with some plates, metal tube and threaded bar or get a friendly vw garage to do it for you.

good effort mate, good to see another being bought back from the brink :)
love the splitty, looks mint, great colour combo too.
-
digging those a lot, feel like binning my vdo's now.
-
those seats will look good Jake, and very jealous of the 24v plans, how long do DG plan on taking to complete it?
-
started on the subframe the last few weekends - removed it, then spent time cleaning, removing crud and repainting.
spent a small fortune on new R32 bushes, engine and gearbox mounts, arb bushes, front wishbone bushes, drop links, ball joints, tie rod ends, bearings, cv joints, cv boot and rack boots.... went OEM for all the critical stuff - bushes, mounts and bearings.
after a fight with the steering knuckle i got the subframe back on the car today, but have a nasty feeling i've threaded the power steering banjo in my rush to crack on :bonk: called it a day at that, will investigate it later this week.

yeh that sounds immense 8)
... still a vauxhall tho
-
not my taste mate, but looks like you've done a good job and good to be different :thumbleft:
i wonder what it would look like if the stickers were gray scale?
-
looking sweet :) good bit of weight shedding too.
-
good work alex, must be nice to get it driven again - the love returns!
-
 i'd never heard of that, sounds like a normal drive for me.
wiki has views on the origin of the term.

as an alternative, i've been using a 3M underbody sealer, supposed to be sprayed but can be brushed. i tend to leave it to go 'off' in the pot for twenty minutes, thickens up like custard.

plenty of vr's getting to your sort of stage now and needing a full engine overhaul. you'll find a lot of info on the search, if your going to keep it as a 12v vr then be prepared for major money for a full overhall, so much in fact that its more economical to either transplant an okay vr or go the 24v/ r32 route.
as a taster i just rebuilt my cylinder head with almost new everything, that was in and around £600 with me doing everything except machine shop work. block wise you can double that figure once you're talking new pistons, rings, bearings, studs and machine shop work!
-
looking good there luke, i like the banded steels, toying with idea of those myself.
-
crikey Tim, sad end, what did you find today that's altered the transplant plan?
-
i bought some lupo wipers off them, and then they sent me normal wipers!
to be fair the guy was friendly upon realising the mistake, and sent me the correct ones with minimal delay.
-
/\ yep undo the mini allan screw first before turning!
-
bummer about the lack of primer wayne, there's never any getting away from every job being more difficut than expected! sure you'll have it looking sharp soon enough.
-
good work there mate, especially sorting the rust issues :)
great colour, miss my old blackberry vr whenever i see another one!
-
i've just repaired that section also, only one side though, it wasn't noticeable until i went digging underneath either.
-
lol alex you're not quite right!
as an alternative marinade recommend you check out 'bilt hammer deox-c powder'.
-
I've a book at home on the 9a injection system, I'll have a look when i get home, but I thought the sensors around that take off were temp related, could be a thermotime of some sort rated at 20secs, hence why it runs fine for that length of time before affecting the fueling.
-
welcome along :)
-
not got out to the garage all week as just too busy with work, however got five minutes to try the Deox-C Powder i bought, more than a little impressed with results!
a couple of days soaking took this manky old battery clamp from rust covered to spotless :thumbleft:
-
yep do all the bushes at once the subframe is off, you can use axle stands to support the engine/ gearbox instead of a crane.
i've a 98 merc 250td too, rusty, wallowy and thirsty, besides that its great :)
