Uprated headlight wiring looms

Recommended Posts

I've been put off upgrading the loom after stories of lights cutting out etc.

It's the shared looms that do that mate. By that I mean you have 2 relays and 2 fuses feeding both headlamps. One fuse blowing takes out the whole circuit.

It's a cr@p way of doing it and dangerous. It's also the lazy and cheap way to do it as they just pick the OE plug that's closest to the battery to pull the low current feeds from.

What you need is a proper L & R independant loom.

I made one myself to get round the blackout issue and it uses a 30 amp relay, a relevant fuse and 30 amp cabling PER BULB (except sides as they only take a few watts). If a fuse pops, then just that filament is taken out of the equation, so you'll never get thrown into total darkness.

Mine also uses OE headlight plugs and is built overkill to run 130 or 150/100 H4s and 130W H3s (for my rallying staging, cough).

Cost me less than £20 in parts and the lights are brighter than a shared system to boot.

I had a look at the fitting instructions and the illustrations on their website.

I'd want a little more waterproofing than that loom appears to offer. My car lives outside and it's wet here in East Anglia !

Andy, I am very interested in the 'Full Monty' loom - i.e. the £42 option.

An illustration of just what the loom comprises would be appreciated - but from your description it sounds like its going to be just what we are all wanting - totally 'plug n play' and also completely reversable if needed.

East Anglia is officially the driest county ;-)

For a total P&P system you need a 4 way male plug to connect into the OE plugs, but why? What's wrong with solder and heat shrink? Who in their right mind would ever want to revert back to the standard candle power loom again? And who would rip out 20 quid's worth of cabling and relays when selling the car on either? I don't understand this analness of wanting to keep the worthless VW loom in tact. Chop it, solder it, heatshrink it. The only plug you need to be concerned about is the headlight one, which is water proof.

It won't be totally P&P anyway as you have to run a wire, or some wires (depending on how it's made) over the to the offside of the car regardless. That isn't P&P.

I know it is, but you should see the field next to the river near me - it's completely flooded, lol.

I do tend to agree about 'why be able to revert to the old loom' - but I guess I'm being a bit belt and braces. If it goes wrong, unplug it and go back to the old.

If there wasn't a plug n play option then I'm sure I'd be happy with cutting, soldering etc. But ... ...

I like the idea of heavy duty wires though :)

yup i agree, you need to have a backup system, so dont want to mess with the original stuff, for example my uprated loom went a week or 2 ago, if i hard wired the thing in (like i was intending on doing, to keep it looking good without wires everywhere) i would have been buggered and not had any lights at all, luckily i had just waterproof'd the relays and left it all sitting in the engine bay, so all i had to do was pull it out and put the old OE plugs back on.

So Kev, hqve yo completely chopped out the VAG loom?

I'd prefer a back up just in case...

Andy a 4x4 system for me with factory plugs when available...

Being as I am not a God of electrics...The way to make this is?? Or is this the type of loom we are all talking about here?

The 4 relay, 4 fuse have independant runs, as does the 2 relay, 2 fuse Dip beam only...

So are u interested in one then Cheesewire?!

I agree with you in some sense - You can't really beat a solder joint, I am an electronics engineer...

I am making these looms for ease of installation, tidiness & anyone can install then, with limited wiring/ electrical knowledge...

I always liked my version.

Upgraded the dipped beam like all the others but also modified the fog circuit so that when switched to full beam, the dipped, full beam and fogs all come on at once.

Fogs also still retained their original function and worked independently with the fog light switches.

Also makes it alot clearer to other road users when you flash them with all 6 lights!

Nice work, Andy :) I'll be up for a 2x2 dipper when I'm a bit more flush ;)

Defo think it's a good idea to make them as plug and play as possible- I for one wouldn't be happy soldering etc!

Dead easy, but I don't want to rain on Andy's parade!

I am happy to supply pics and wiring diagrams to anyone who wants to make one themself though.

You wont be raining on anyones parade...

At the end of the day I'm making next to nothing on these, the cost is almost all high quality materials. I have the time, know how & experience to make these looms... thats all. I'm not here to make a living, I'm here to sell a high quality product to fellow C enthusiasts...

I am sick of the low quality looms selling on ebay (bar one seller who has recently appeared - link posted the other day) & wanted to do something about it...

I'll happliy post my final circuit diagrams, even the BOM if anyone wants to know where I source my materials.

Andy.

Hello mate, I been trying to source one of these looms for ages, last loom making guy dissapeared off the planet! :mad2:

Apart from the risk of making one myself with a mate of mine, do you think you can put me down for one too?

Will the system work as before but better?

Let me know cost etc, plug and play one would be good, nice one. :notworthy:

Hi Andy,

I'll like to take one of the P&P 4x4s please. Not an electrics expert so as many instructions and pics as possible would be great.

Let me know when you might want payment etc.

Cheers,

Vaughan
